Shanghai is a fascinating place. Having spent a total of 6 days at the Expo, you can say I have been appropriately "expo-ed out". Also, this is my 5th trip to Shanghai in less than 2 years --- so, what to do? I have done side trips to Nanjing and the water towns, I have done the Bund stroll, checked out the shopping places, enjoyed the more modern Xin Tian Di area, and the more Chinese Yu Garden. I opted to stay behind in Shanghai while my friends made a trip to Beijing , and the Shanghai nightlife is not really for me. Legs up, I'd be quite alright with a flute of champagne , listening to good music or watching a video from the comforts of an air-conditioned room. We have tried Manchurian, and Yunnan ... read more

Here we go again. Just had to go back to Shanghai and cover more ground at the World Expo as well as spring a surprise to visiting friends who dropped by Manila on their way to China. What a pleasant time to be with friends who have become family over the years! The Pavilions I Missed Last Time Last time I was here with family, we covered all of 16 pavilions in 3 days in 3 zones: Asia (), Europe ( ) and the Americas ( ). While viewing the varied architecture and design of the many pavilions was a thrill by itself, it was quite an experience to actually get inside the pavilion (time permitting, what with the long lines) to view the exhibits and know the countries more intimately. We must have grown more ... read more

Today, we were each feeling confident about where to go and what to do on this 3rd day at the Shanghai Expo 2010. Shama Apartment offered free breakfast but the first 2 days, we were all too lazy to go down and besides, it felt soooo good to sleep in the whole morning! On our 3rd morning, we decided to check out what they offer. Coffee, good. Bread, good variety. Jams and Marmalades, not bad. Cereals, good selection. Yet somehow, I miss our self-prepared breakfasts of dimsum and noodles! Plus the previous night's leftover fried rice (with scallops!) from Bi Feng Tang which Martin adores! Metro To the Expo 2010 By this time, we have mastered the turns we had to take walking to the nearest metro station, and the metro lines and interchange to get ... read more

Our second day at the World Expo in Shanghai was just as exciting. Two metro rides to the Expo and we're off. This time around, we found the shorter route to the gate and decided to indulge the kids with a KFC lunch. (After the Cantonese lunch yesterday, and the Bi Feng Tang take- out duck dinner last night, they must be hankering for good old-fashioned chicken drumsticks and fries! ) Kids' Comment: Don't the VIP passes work at KFC? That drew a lot of laughs, and rendered us hungrier for our chicken lunch. We crossed the street to take the Expo shuttle bus to "Europe". Some helpful tip: Be sure to get seats near the exit doors. It can get really, really cramped as the bus makes several stops to take in more passengers. By ... read more

We were a group of 10. My entire caboodle of 5 adults and 2 kids (less Shelly who is in Sydney), and my friend's family of 3 . With 3 days to "waste" at the Expo, we tried to "structure" our visit into : Asia, Middle East and the Pacific for Day 1, then Europe for Day 2 and the Americas for Day 3. Naturally, we all agreed to dedicate our last day for shopping. Each day started with a very late breakfast, off to the Expo site via metro by noon, a very late lunch (when others are done with it, to avoid the lines) and making our way home by 8pm or so. Dinner can be anywhere, but each opportunity to savor good food never ever wasted! Flight from Manila to Shanghai We took ... read more

I have completed my blogs on Indonesia, to include some kind of a guide on what food to eat around there from Jakarta through Yogyakarta through Bali. So, why not one in my own country? I have been reading up on blogs about the Philippines and what you guys are eating, that I thought I should do this blog to guide you where to go and what to order. Feasting On A Lechon The celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain once visited the Philippines and tried our lechon. He then declared it is the best he has ever tried in all his travels. This roasted pig adorns almost every buffet table as families and friends celebrate occasions from birthdays to anniversaries to graduations to weddings to baptisms to fiestas. It is the equivalent of a royalty dish. It ... read more

Isla Malipano is an island among several Samal islands, just a 5 minute speedboat ride from the more famous Pearl Farm Resort. But first, you must take the 90 minute flight from Manila to Davao, then the 1 hour boat ride to Samal Island's Pearl Farm. ;-) Morning flights to Davao went as early as 6am, but we opted to take the 10am flight. We landed half an hour before noon and the shuttle took us for a short ride to the Pearl Farm jetty port. We were served a buffet lunch just before taking the boat that will ferry us to Samal Island. Pearl Farm is so called because it actually was a Pearl Farm sometime back. But it is now one of the pricey resorts in the country and appeals mainly to honeymooners, ... read more

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! I was hoping to bump into some TravelBloggers in Boracay as there were quite a number of tourists in this lovely island at the same time my family and I stayed to meet the new year. The weather forecast was not very encouraging. A WET new year's weekend, it threatened! But the sun was out and furiously beating down on us when we all arrived in the morning of December 30th for our 5-day holiday here. Must be quite a pleasant change for those guys who flew in from the harsh winter in Europe and North America. Arriving in Kalibo, Aklan and Taking the Boat to the Island Many choose to fly straight into Caticlan airport to take the 15 minute boat trip to the island. We have been here ... read more

A couple more nights and it's that time of the year once more. They say one of the longest Christmas Season can be found in this lone Catholic nation in Asia. Filipinos love Christmas and let everyone be warned that in this country, you can hear Christmas carols as early as September. And those Christmas decorations should be up long after Christmas, perhaps till the middle of January. Footloose I started off this year by spending New Year's with the family in Hongkong. Those were all of 4 days of bonding moments , dining galore, and playing tourists. Though we have made many trips to Hongkong before, this city with such an international flavor is always a pleasure to visit. More so since our family spent the holidays with dear old friends who flew in from ... read more

What to eat in Indonesia? Long before we arrived here, we have been familiar with the world-famous Nasi Goreng and Sate Babi. Fried rice and barbecue to most. And then there's the famous sambal that goes with almost anything edible here. There are many places we tried, from high-end to the daily fare , and thought we should do a separate blog on what else, but FOOD! Bebek Bengil A trip to Ubud's rice paddies, art galleries and handicraft shops would not be complete without sampling the very famous, original Bebek Bengil . Those who have been reading my blogs would have guessed by now that between shopping and dining, the second option is my preferred activity. So, here's my non-food expert's take on Indonesian food. The literal translation is dirty duck but don't let that ... read more
