We are back and all are well. More pics will be posted later this week when we have time to look through them and pick out the best ones. I'll be adding the pics back in their proper date so things will be in date order and not the order of the posting...... read more

Last entry from Vietnam. We'll be hopping into a cab for the airport in about 20 minutes to start the long return journey home. Its about 3:30 pm there right now so we should be back after about 27 hours of car, plane and layover. See you all bright and early on Monday morning!... read more

We made it up here mid day yesterday and its truly beautiful. Despite the forecast the weather was perfect; clear, mid eighties, mild humidity. The kids spent all afternoon moving between the pool and the ocean. The ocean (South China Sea actually) was the warmest any of us had ever encountered. It was like a very warm swimming pool and had to be in the 80s as well. The resort seems to be nearly empty (this is the cool and rainy season for them) and the few other guests we have seen all seem to be Russians. There are some jellyfish about in the sea as well (clear/white about the size of a fist) but luckily they are not poisonous. If they were I'd be in trouble as I bumped into one and had its tentacles ... read more

Heading to Mui ne after all. The weather changed so we'll head over for just one night (arrrrrrgh! more bus rides!) and then back to HCMC to pack up and head out. The beach looks beautiful but its going to be the most expensive night of the trip to stay there. Time to pack up again for an early start. Not sure if we'll post from there ... read more

Hi again, we just got back to Ho Chi Minh City from 2 days on the Mekong (with an overnight 'homestay' that is really sort of a Vietnamese bed and breakfast). Internet connectivity was unavailable down there and also at our hotel tonight so I'll try to post more with photos tomorrow when we have a chance (at an internet cafe right now). The Mekong was a really pleasant surprise and the kids both actually ate the local food (elephant ear fish and spring-rolls we made ourselves at the table) but we have all burnt out on riding the buses to see the sights (about 4.5 hours return today). Also, the weather at the beach (and here in the city as well) calls for rain the next few days so we have decided to punt on ... read more

Today we started by hopping onto a minibus to travel from Hanoi to Hao Long to get aboard a junk on Hao Long bay. The trip on the bus was a bit rough as we were in the very back and the roads were quite bumpy so by the time we got there, Ted at least was ready to get out and never look back. After a bit of queuing in the parking lot things got sorted out and our guide 'Mike' led us to the tender for a ride to the junk. The harbor was absolutely crammed with junks. Supposedly according to the lonely planet guidebook there are 150 of them taking tourists around. Our book was published in 2003 though and now there is probably over 1000. At one stop that was not too ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hai Phong » Cat Ba Island April 15th 2011

On the 15th we left the boat after breakfast and headed over to Cat Ba island across from our anchorage. This is the biggest island in Hao Long bay, probably about 30 by 50 kilometers. We took another minibus into the center of the island where we stopped for a bicycle excursion. While Carolyn slept on the bus, Jacob, CC and Ted (and the other tourists) took some bicycles for a 5 km ride across the island to see the sights. We stopped near the hospital cave. This was a big natural cave that ended up being expanded into a 3 story underground hospital during the war. The kids weren't interested so we just cycled a bit further down the road before returning to the bus. The cycling was easy and flat, but the bicycles made ... read more
