Christmas day was set to be busy. And fun!!! We had another great breakfast before taking off in our bus. I think I should explain two of my companions, though I think I did in another blog. When I saw my family back in Sweden a month before, my niece and nephew gave me two of their precious squishmellows to hold onto until I next saw them (they did have ulterior motives as they wanted me to buy them something and gave up their squishmellows to save the space in their luggage). So, I decided to give Perry and Bernardo an adventure - my Moldova group was totally on board, so they had a nice time as well. Milestii Mici The drive to Milestii Mici was about 45 minutes and we arrived just as it opened. ... read more

Why Moldova? This was a question we were asked repeatedly. For me, it was a last minute trip as my Christmas plans and backup plans were canceled. I had seen this trip listed and was curious: wine cave? Cycling? Trains? Yup! I knew a couple of people in this group of eleven women and one man. We flew to Bucharest where we quickly made it thru customs, were picked up and taken to the train station. We had about 5 hours to kill before our trip, so we just hung out in a coffee store inside the station, occasionally harassed by a territorial / homeless man. The station was fine and decorated a bit for Christmas, but aside from a couple places, you need cash to pay for things, especially the toilet. Our train came a ... read more

A bunch of mini adventures with the family before and after our Arctic trip. We did a lot over the course of about ten days Snowstorm When I first arrived by train from Copenhagen, it was snowing. By the end of the day, it was coming down hard. We took the metro from the train station because of the slush. It was so pretty and wintry to see this on first arrival, the new fallen snow covering the trees and roofs. The kids and Aunt D went sledding that night (well, it was probably like 3pm, but it was dark). They enjoyed making snowballs. We visited the Vasa Museum the next day, walking most of the route which took about 30 minutes - the trams were shut down, so our options were limited. The kids complained, ... read more

On our last day, we decided to drive the 90 minutes even further north to explore the town of Abisko, one of the best places to see the Northern lights. I will warn you - it was gorgeous. My photos do not do it justice. We left around 9:30 am so we were driving throughout the peak of daylight. Essentially, it is a beautiful blur between sunrise and sunset, incredible colors the whole time. The ride itself was easy and beautiful (despite a bit of GPS confusion in the city of Kiruna and stopping for me to view the expansive mine operations in the distance). We stopped a couple of times for photos, including when we saw the large Lake Tometrask, more mountainous country, trains over bridges, and the snow covered landscape. We also stopped at ... read more

My sisters, their families and I took the 15 hour overnight train to the far north of Sweden: Kiruna, 150 km north of the arctic circle. I was actually quite excited for the train ride (I love trains), but a couple of the adults were a bit nervous (I won't say who). We had booked two cabins, each slept 6 people. The 6 kids all enjoyed some cousin time in their own cabin, while the adults played some bean board game two cabins down. We had asked the middle cabin if they wanted to switch, but they were an incomplete group of strangers. The wine came out and we stated to enjoy our time, but the two families were divided come bed time. I made up most of the beds, climbing to the top bunk and ... read more

Europe November 20th 2022

Before visiting my sisters for Thanksgiving, I decided to take an extra couple days of me time. I flew on Emirates in economy and it was okay, surprisingly crowded. Getting from the airport to the hotel was a breeze. I stayed at the very friendly CitizenM near the train station and Tivoli gardens. However, the Christmas markets at Tivoli would not open until the next day. So, after taking a nap, I wandered past the town hall plaza and down the pedestrian only shopping street, Stroget, to get my bearings. I was happy to see small Christmas markets along the way in two places before I even got to Nyhavn. The first looked to just be opening, so I wandered around, then the second market seemed to be a bit more hopping. I was able to ... read more

Another quick Trekkup trip. This was a makeup trip for the one I missed a month before with stupid Covid. I was a bit wary of this one - work was killing me, I was so tired, and the thought of a long hike in the hot mountains was a bit daunting. But since my last meeting on Friday went well I decided to suck it up and go. We met up at Terminal 2 at the airport; I had driven and parked because I had an early meeting Monday morning upon return. I realized there was no group leader on this trip even though there were 14 of us. However, T said the guide was very knowledgeable and would be able to handle it himself. He was right - Saidbek was great! The flight was ... read more

Another Trekkup trip for the books! A little drama before this one though, thank you Covid. The previous weekend I was supposed to do another trip but had to take a PCR test (a last minute change in requirements), and it came out positive. Based on Dubai restrictions, I was now to be in quarantine for 10 days, which meant no trip that weekend and it may also affect the following week's trip to Kazakhstan. I stayed home to work (no symptoms, and actually only got 6 hours of sleep a night no problem). By Wednesday, I took a home pcr test, then I called a testing company to do a home PCR test - two negatives in a row and I would be released. It worked and I was able to join my Kazakhstan trip! ... read more

On the last day we slept in a bit but C left first. It was so good to see her again! 25 years of friendship and I feel like we haven't changed a bit! St Duncan in the East So, one of my own goals for this trip was to visit a few random places around London that are a bit off the beaten path. First on my list is St Duncan in the East, which has a long history. A church of some type has been at this site for around 1,500 years, a proper church placed in about 950 AD. However, it was destroyed by the Great Fire of London (more details below) and rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren (more details below), and then destroyed again in the Blitz during World War II. The next day we were slept in a bit as our first plan of the day is Sunday roast!! yay! C made us reservations at the Ladbrooke Arms in Notting Hill, a highly recommended place she found. We met K there and enjoyed (well, I did) the delicious meal. It was quite heavy, but I was in heaven with my Yorkshire pudding. I think C and K don't really get Yorkshire pudding, but that just leaves more for me! Takes me back to some of the lovely roasts my grandmother made when we were young and it is the main dish that just really reminds me of England. After getting our fill, feeling so heavy, we walked through the beautiful streets of Notting Hill, stopping at an organic store, then on to the next spot: a ... read more
