Aug 5-20 Well, when you last heard from me we were leaving Mbarara, and enroute to our safari adventure. Safari was absolutely amazing, it exceeded any expectations I had of it. Every single day seemed to be better than the one before. One of my favourite places we stayed was in Queen Elizabeth National Park right by the Kazinga Channel. At this lodge, we had hippos and elephants walking through our camp. One morning, me and Steph were woken up by a hippo eating grass right outside our tent. Since being on safari, we learned that hippos are very loud creatures, they are constantly groaning, grunting, growling and their chewing noises are especially annoying. We had to stay in our tent for a half hour until it waddled away, and then we could start getting ready ... read more

July 23-Aug 4 Well, it’s officially been 6 weeks in Mbarara. The time has flown by, it feels like just yesterday we were on our way back from Ruhija. Mbarara started to feel like home, but the unreliable water, electricity, and appliances was very frustrating. Since we’re in the dry season, the water and power outages have been even more frequent. We also had our kettle break with 5 days left in our house, which was a loss that hit us hard (RIP). Looking back on our 6 weeks here, I think it might’ve have been more difficult than our 3 weeks in Ruhija. Although in Ruhija we had no running water or power, we knew what to expect every day when we woke up. We knew we had to brush our teeth with water from ... read more

July 8th – 22nd Update on the cockroach situation. We have seen in 1 in our house, thankfully we’re still behind the other house who has seen 2. Also still have no idea what is scratching the inside of our walls during the night and probably never will. It seems that with the arrival of our single cockroach, it means we are officially settled into Mbarara living. We’ve mastered the ins and outs of our finicky house, we know that when the bathroom tap turns off, we simply need to turn on the shower and it’ll start working again. We know what to do when our power runs out, and we know how to navigate cooking. We have a stove top and a hot plate in our kitchen but between those two we have only 3 ... read more

June 24th- July 7th Well, here we are, back in Mbarara. It feels nice to be back in the city, but it’s very different than the small communities we just came from. Everything is so loud and so busy, there are so many people. I miss the seclusion, the quiet and relaxing feel to Ruhija, however it is nice to have access to the stuff we need. We don’t have to drive 2 hours to go to a market and we don’t have to hike to the top of a mountain to charge our phones. Our group is split into the houses we were during our training week, there are 5 in my house and 5 in the other house. Our house is smaller, but we have yet to see a cockroach which is great. However, ... read more

Disclaimer: These last 2 weeks have been busy so this blog post is long! Read at your own risk.. June 10th – 23rd Here’s one thing you may not have known about Africa… it’s really, really cold. Our last week at Ruhija was spent wrapped up in sweaters, jackets, toques and blankets. Since we’re in a tropical forest, it’s pretty damp, which makes the cold seem different. However, we have kept our mind off the cold by keeping very busy. We also had adapted into our life at Ruhija, it was very similar to camping, except more extreme. We became experts at cooking over charcoal stoves, doing laundry by hand, and using latrines. We even became really good at squatting, and I might even miss our squatter latrines when we’re gone (but probably won’t…). ... read more

Africa June 10th 2018

May 26 – June 10th Sunday was our first full day in Mbarara, and we immediately dove into training by spending the day doing Cross Cultural Perspective training, and we got to meet some of the other international students and Ugandan students. This training was very interesting and we did lots of different activities that highlighted how different cultures perceive things in different ways. The one that stood out to me the most was the privilege walk. During this exercise, we all started with our backs against the wall, then the facilitators would ask the group a series of questions for example: “Did you have magazines growing up,” “did your family have a bicycle,” and “did you go to Kindergarten.” Each time you answered yes, you had to take a step forward. Many of the questions ... read more

May 17 - 26 Well, we have survived our first week in Uganda. So far, it has been amazing, eye opening, scary, hilarious and everything else rolled into one. Because of changes in schedules with the MUST rural placement program, our group all arrived in Uganda a week early, which gave us a week to get to know everyone in our group which was one of my favourite parts of the week. It hasn’t even been two weeks yet, but I feel like we’ve known each other for years, we’ve been through a lot together since we got here. There are 10 of in our group. Two of us are in Kinesiology, 1 in pharmacy, 4 in nursing, 2 in nutrition, and poor Chris is the only male and the only one in veterinary medicine. We ... read more
