Early morning start to the day……we left Warwick at 2.00am to make sure we arrived at Coolangatta Airport in plenty of time after dropping off our car to the storage facility for its 3 months holiday on the Gold Coast. It worked out cheaper to leave the car in storage including the cost of fuel to get there and back then it did to pay for a motel room for 2 nights and bus and train tickets to and from Warwick, even before the other half haggled down the price. He must have been getting back into practice for Asia. We didn’t end up arriving at the airport too early after all. Cunningham’s Gap was closed for an hour because someone was dragging a huge-arse Siemens transformer over the range. We didn’t even think to check ... read more

Today we left the friendly little town of Phonsavan and headed off to Luang Prabang. We had organised through the White Orchid Guest House to catch a mini van to Luang Prabang. We were promptly picked up from the guest house in teh morning and after the driver had driven around collecting as many people as he could fit in his van from other guest houses and hotels we were driven to the mini bus station. The system is entirely organised for tourists and no locals were to be seen in these vans. You pretty much get assigned to a mini van and it waits until it is full and then heads off to on it's journey. This didn't take very long as the van was full within about 10 mins. We had heard of the ... read more

Today was another early start. Again our guide was also our driver. We headed off after a wander around the morning markets. First planned stop was a large bomb crater somewhere out in the countryside. Unfortunately they were doing road works and there was no way our little van was going to get through. Second item on the agenda were the Tham Xang Caves. After waiting around in the local village for a little while the head of the village confirmed to our guide that the gate was locked and the key was lost. We had a great time anyway walking around the village. The residents were very friendly and didn't seem to mind us having a look around...even encouraging us to take photos. We headed off again..this time heading for the Hmong Village our guide ... read more

Breakfast was included at the White Orchid Guest House. It consisted of eggs, toast, jam, tea and coffee. It was quite filling but again the bread was the thin sweet white bread found all over South East Asia and the coffee you could stand a spoon up in. After breakfast Stephen and I along with our new German friend set off with our friendly Hmong Tour Guide who had also become our driver as none other was available. We headed off to the Plain of Jars and started with Jar site 3. It is not the largest number of jars but was certainly a great introduction to the rest of the days activities. The trip out was very pleasant through the Lao countryside but it was also very dusty. On the way back we passed a ... read more

Excitement today as we are to fly out to Phonsavan and the Plain of Jars. Breakfast was had in the hotel restaurant and as our flight didn't leave until the afternoon we took a wander through the back streets near our hotel. There are quite a few wats and many bakeries within walking distance of the hotel. We stopped off to have coffee and pastry at a little French bakery in one of the streets of the main road. The coffee was so horribly strong and sweet. I had forgotten they made it with condensed milk, reminded me why I only ever drink tea in SE Asia. We wandered the streets taking photos of every day life in Vientiane until it was time to head back to our hotel for the taxi ride to the airport. ... read more

Breakfast was included in the fee for the hotel and was buffet style and you could have your eggs cooked fresh...fried, scrambled or an omelette. The asian choices of noodles and rice were pretty good and very filling. The bread though was the awful sweet white bread found all over SE Asia. After breakfast we decided to head off on the walking tour I had downloaded onto my ipod and see some of the sites of Vientiane. First stop on the tour was the Presidential Palace. It was pretty uninspiring as it was surrounded by extremely high walls and we couldn't really see anything. Next door pretty much was Haw Phra Kaew or the Emerald Buddha Hall. The very famous Emerald Buddha was of course not there as it had been carried off by the Thai ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane January 28th 2012

It was an early start for us. Our flight was due to leave from KL to Vientiane at 7.30 in the morning but what woke us up was the brawl that was occuring in front of a night club a few doors up from our hotel. Guess some things are the same no matter where you go. It was surprising even with a 5.30 arrival LCCT was extremely busy and was only going to get busier over the next couple of hours. Check-in was not available when we arrived so we waited on seats outside the secured area. There were people all around busily weighing bags and having their bags packaged up for travel. Eventually check-in opened and we were able to hand over our checked in luggage. Breakfast was the next item on the agenda. ... read more

After breakfast we were approached by a gentleman in the lobby of our hotel who wanted us to hire his taxi for the day to show us the sights of KL. We had been wondering the cheapest way to get from where we were into KL city. The staff at the hotel were very friendly but spoke only a little English...so not much help there. The taxi drivers price seemed very reasonable and although we were a bit hesitant we agreed. It turned out to be a really good decision. The taxi driver was a friendly Indian guy who was a wealth of information and really eager to show us his city and explain a bit about the culture. Even though we had only hired him for the morning to do a standard tour we ended ... read more

Early start today. The previous night we picked up a few snacks to eat for breakfast not knowing what time we would actually get back to the airport. AirAsia sent a bus to pick up all the guests that they had placed at various hotels all over the Gold Coast. Arriving at the airport we found we had been given the same sits as the previous day, a voucher for breakfast at the coffee shop in the international lounge and a wait to now see if we were going to leave for KL today. As the departure time came and went it seemed like we would be stuck on the ground in Australia for another day. About mid morning though a boarding call was made for our plane. Excitement, excitement. It should be said that the ... read more

Waking up and finding the rain had eased was a great relief. Little did we know that this would turn into a very long day. Bright and early and with heaps of time up our sleeves we headed off to put our car into it's home for the next two and a half weeks. We are no strangers to leaving our car in long term parking but this was the first time we had done so with a company on the Gold Coast. We need not have worried as they were even more efficient and friendly then the place we leave it in Brisbane. Within 15 mins of handing our car over we were dropped outside the international terminal of Coolangatta Airport. Couldn't ask for better service. While standing around waiting for the AirAsia counter to ... read more
