We had a fairly early start and headed off to have breakfast at our fast becoming favourite breakfast spot. Today of all days breakfast was late….the bakery had no baguettes. We decided to have noodle soup, surprise, surprise. It took ages to come, but it was freshly made and still yum, but it made us very late for our tour. Lucky the pickup point was only two shops away. We set off with our tuk-tuk driver and picked up another two passengers along the way. The first point of call was the caves of Phnom Chhnork. It was a little bit of a walk to the caves across a few fields but nothing too strenuous. Neither was the climb up to the cave. The shapes of various animals including an elephant can be made out. There ... read more

As breakfast was not included with the room at our guest house we headed off rather late to find something to eat. We discovered a little place close to the corner of our street that served the best noodle soup and omelettes we had ever had and for a very, very reasonable price. It was not surprising that heaps of people from the surrounding guest houses ate there at some point in the day. Later on in the morning we wandered into a local travel agent to book some excursions for our time in Kampot. There are heaps of travel agents around town and if you book a group tour it doesn’t seem to matter which one you book with as they seem to take it in turns to do the tour. We organised to do ... read more

It was another early morning start to the day. The hotel had booked us on the Sorya bus line to Kampot. Giant Ibis are soon to start a Kampot route but we are few days too early. It was an interesting trip as this is a local bus not a tourist bus that is designed to get you from place to another as quick as possible. The bus leaves from near the central market but still offers a pick up from your hotel door. It was great to be able to see the outer suburbs of Phnom Penh and local life as the Riverside has heaps of locals but many tourists as well. Initially the bus went along quite quick but the closer it got to Kampot and Kep the more stops it made to pick ... read more

After an early start we were back on the Giant Ibis bus heading to Phnom Penh. There is nothing exciting to report about the trip. Although they advertise Wi-Fi all the way it probably in fact only works for about half the trip. On this particular trip the assistant seemed to have a liking for gory movies including the uncut version of Rambo. From the look on the faces of the bus passengers I don’t think they shared the same liking. Finding a tuk-tuk on arrival in Phnom Penh was very easy as the drivers have a numbering system and take it in turn to get a fare. They seem standardise and it’s pretty hard to negotiate with someone who only asked for a couple of dollars in the first place. We stayed at The Local ... read more

After another great breakfast at 7 Candles guesthouse we had another 8 o’clock start and headed off for our third and last day at the magnificent temples of Angkor. The first temple on this morning’s agenda was Preah Khan, a temple that quickly became a fast favourite. From the outside it seems very small as it is not very wide. How deceptive this was as the temple complex stretched a very long way back. The knowledge of our tour guide saw us viewing the temple from many sides not just walking straight down the middle. Of course he filled us in with stories of its construction and use. Much of the temple has not been reconstructed so again you get the feeling of having just discovered it. We were fascinated with the question of whether or ... read more

After a delicious breakfast of omelets, baguettes and Vietnamese coffee we sent of with our wonderful tour guide to see the first temple of the day.....Angkor Wat itself. We expected there to be a lot of people and we weren't disappointed lol. There were heaps of large tour groups with their leaders carrying brightly coloured flags on sticks or the groups were all wearing the same coloured t-shirt or cap. Sometimes even all three. It is hard to describe first impressions of Angkor Wat....it is breath taking. Our great guide unfolded the story of Angkor Wat and the story of the carvings on the wall and it just became even more amazing. The carvings on the wall are from the Hindu story the Ramayana. The king who built Angkor Wat followed the Hindu religion. The story ... read more

For a new experience we tried Khmer noodles for breakfast and the best Vietnamese coffee we have had yet. At 8.00am we met our guide who due to a lack of available drivers also filled that role. He turned out to be a great guide - full of knowledge, camera happy like us, and always down for a good joke. The original plan was to visit Angkor Wat and the small circuit. However it turned out to be a religious day and so the top level of Angkor Wat was closed....so change of plan. We set off for Kbal Spean, Banteay Srey, and sunset at Pre Rup. Kbal Spean is about 30 kilometres from Siem Reap and is reached by climbing up a small mountain for about 45 minutes. The climb was fairly easy going except ... read more

We had only one day in Phnom and after an early start today we were heading off to Siem Reap on the new bus service by Giant Ibis. Our bus departed at 8.45 and a hotel pickup was included in the price of the bus ticket. We had been informed that we would be picked up between 7.45 and 8.30. This turned out to be closer to 8.55, so regardless to say our bus did not leave on time. There is nothing else though to complain about with the Giant Ibis service. The buses are comfortable with heaps of leg room even for very tall people I presume. Also included in the price of the ticket were a fresh croissant, a bottle of water and a cool moistened towelette provided after lunch. All for the grand ... read more

An early start (4.00am) saw us heading for LCCT in Kuala Lumpur to catch our 7o'clock flight to Phom Penh. We were going to use the driver who had drivn us from the hotel to downtown KL for the return journey. He however wanted to charge us too much. The owner of the Lok Ann offered an airport transfer for half the price. No brainer which one we took. Luckily we left quite early as it was a pretty slow trip out to the airport from Chinatown. Check in at LCCtT was quick and efficient. Evn though we had already checked in onine you still go through the entire process again and it isn't simly just a baggage drop off. Earlier this year the gates for Phnom Penh were Y1 and Y2. There was huge confusion ... read more

We had one day to spend Kuala Lumpur. Having been here before we weren't inclined to spend it looking at the same things we had seen last time. For breakfast we wandered around Petaling Street and China Town to find something on offer. We need not have worried there was a myriad of choices and of course we settled on Asian. Congee with chicken, chilli noodles and coffee. The congee and noodles were absolutely delicious. Chinatown is a fascinating place and exploring it took a good part of the morning. Little shops sell anything you can imagine and not all directed at the tourit dollar. I know of one young lady who would have delighted in the shop that sold hair ties and headbands in every colour and style imaginable. We had a wander throught the ... read more
