Hints from a Philadelphian I am a Philadelphian and just read your blog and I am sorry you didn't enjoy my city. Your comments give me a clue as to why.
As for the liberty bell it is small but it represents the who;e of our forefathers establishing what was never done before; a government for and by the people. It is not the bell that we cherish it is the ideal it represents.
If I were to advise you on where to go I certainly would not send you to Jim's steaks. I live around the corner and I don't go there. Also the Jambalaya is a creole dish from Louisiana with African and french influences.
If I were advising you I would have recommended our museums, and a tour of our architecture which has a strong European influence.
I also think you would have enjoyed a tour of our gardens and parks; we have the largest urban park in the U.S
So I am sorry that you did not see the better side the City of Brotherly Love. If you want to know more about it feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Armond Scavo

Interesting! I've been admirer of the Shaolin for years and would love to visit it in person. I watched their show on PBS and in person in Florida some years ago. Reading through your blog was so interesting. Stay away from that MSG. You most likely had some horse meat or someone's pet dog. LOL. I sure hope it was chicken for you.
You're a self-righteous, arrogant arse. What would you expect a first time visitor from a developed country to think of India? It is dirty, it is smelly. The author is merely sharing her feelings and experiences from her trip. Accounts like these are of great use to someone who is planning on visiting India for the first time.
You're self-righteous opinions are not of use to anyone because they don't represent a true account of what India is really like.
So get off you're high horse and join the real world. You "citizen of the world." Absolutely full of shit.
Not so pathetic There is no requirement for anybody to ever agree to selling something at a price they are not happy with. So I have come to learn having lived in a developing country for the last few years. If I walk away feeling good about a cheap price, I can be sure that the vendor is just as happy as he as probably still sold it at a greater than normal margin. This only of course applies to vendors working the tourist strips - where business is free flowing and customers are ever present.
Sheena - I believe your comments would be more applicable to a local non-tourist shop that is not used to dealing with tourists and therefore does not over-inflate prices.
Pathetic Its amazing how people have no conscience about screwing the poor. No-one is laughing when you walk away with goods at a quarter of the price, what will 10 rupees do? Did you ever think about who it is affecting??? Its the poor man or woman who worked on the fields/factory/street for less than a dollar a day - for you to "while you walk out with a bag full of wares"...then have the audacity to say it will last three months. You truly are a sad pathetic excuse for a human being. Where's your humanity??? Third world is what India will remain - with the Western society still raping them and screwing them from running a well run economy!
falen knight in bruges ive never fallen that was a wannabee knight in plastic armour.
Thow not only insult me but my horse as wel. Thanks for abusing and givn the public wrong info
Strange Rock Formations The strange rock formations that you comment about , are simply markers. Local fishermen would come to that part of the island and if they caught good fish , they would leave stones there to mark the spot. Eventually tourists like your self and I saw these strange formations and many visitors replicated it. Imagine how hard this made it for the local fishermen.
Rock piles Hi, I saw these rock piles in Peru myself. From whatI recall they were built as prayers to mother nature....kinda like lighting a candle in a Christian church. I've seen the little rock piles in a few places though - like Cambodia and China.
Excellent story Kit_t. I like pictures of food too. Most people think I'm nutz zooming in on the food on the table. Pain in the backside at the time, but a great memory for the future. Thanks.
vouvvv our Chorsu Bazar...thanks a lot for beautiful fotos..i am missing so much our simple people....mocking is not uzbek culture...it doesnt belong to our culture...i see it for the first time ..only singers do so..
i miss my motherland hi!!
u have taken a lot of beautiful pictures , although i am not from samarkand ..(I am from tashkent, capital) i was there only one time..it is amazing..i am missing my motherland.... u have right ..shashlik tastes really good....
Taliban Yeah...Anything that says Taliban is good is a terrorist.
Btw, you can see a lot of people with Asiatic (or mongoloid ) features even in Poland , Slovakia and even in Greece. That is courtesy to Ghengis Khan. He paved his seeds till Eastern Europe.. :)
re: tourist vs locals just to clarify (see my comment inline of the blog as well) - I perfectly understand to inflate prices for tourists, but a 40X hike for a single building that can be seen in 5 mins is a bit steep. If you were talking about something like the Taj Mahal, maybe its justifiable.
tourist vs locals I'm embarrassed that you didn't understand why they needed to rip off the tourists while keeping it cheap for the locals. As a tourist, paying the fees to the local tourist authority is a good thing, as it goes towards the upkeep. It also keeps the price low for the poor people of the country who can't really afford it.
tourist fee enjoyed your 1st day travelogue. As for tourist feeling ripped off: one has to be forgiving during travels to these impoverished countries, who depend on the tourist currency not only to feed their families but in a large number of cases, upkeep the sites, when the govt. doesn't pay.
Tune into our blogs about the food, antics, taxi drivers and tour guides we experienced while traveling ... oh yeah, as well as all those great historic places.... full info
