Roald Dahl!?! Katie, How interesting that your students are reading Roald Dahl books. Does it seem as though they get his dark humor? I just read this blog because we were in Chicago & surrounding areas (if you can call Michigan & Minnesota surrounding areas). We got to see Lianne for a couple of chunks of time so we were happy! Judy
Re: Roald Dahl!?! Wow I meant to respond to this comment a while ago and just kept forgetting, sorry! No, I'm not sure they do get his dark humor. I'm lucky if they can tell me what the characters are doing at any given time, haha. They're at the weird place where they CAN read the books, but still have a hard time when I ask comprehension questions. They're definitely getting better, but sometimes they struggle pinpointing which characters are doing what, and when.
Gorgeous pictures Katie, your pictures are gorgeous and you are an excellent writer. I really enjoyed reading this and looking at the pictures. Thank you so much for sharing. I look forward to reading about Jeju
Happy New Year We celebrated of course. Next time you go to Taiwan let me know. I am still in touch with Brian. He was long ago boyfriend of Tina’s. We still stay in touch. His parents own his amazing ancient resort high in themontains of Taiwan. Hugs to you and Tanya
Re: Happy New Year Glad to hear you're keeping up the celebrations! I will definitely contact you the next time I go to Taiwan; that sounds super cool. I really love Taiwan, so I will definitely go back again!
Din tai fung Terry will probably tell you this too but we discovered Din Tai Fung in Shanghai. Delicious! We've eaten there in Hong Kong, Seattle & I think Terry has eaten at one in southern California. Shanghai was my favorite. It's in an historic group of buildings in the old international district.
Enjoy!
Re: Din tai fung Yumm Din Tai Fung is one of the best places on Earth. When I was looking at the hours while we were in Taiwan, I noticed that apparently there's at least one in Seoul, which I will definitely have to check out next time I go.
Great Fortune I can’t believe how wonderful it will be for you and Tanya to be together. What a great experience for both of you. We missed you at Thanksgiving. Your folks told us all about their trip. It was hard though not having you and Pauline with us. No one is as passionate about mashed potatoes as you. Christmas won’t feel the same without you this year. Love you
Re: Great Fortune I definitely missed you guys during Thanksgiving, too! I especially missed mashed potatoes. I was over here eating instant ramen and an egg sandwich, which aren't nearly as tasty as the typical Thanksgiving fare. It will definitely be weird being alone on Christmas for the first time ever, but happy holidays to everyone!
Always enjoy reading your updates on your adventures, if you get the opportunity to go to the olympics you should go. I went to the summer games in Atlanta and had a great time meeting folks from all over the world. Sorry you want be able to come home for Christmas.
The Parents
Hi Katie!
Well, it took your Dad's birthday party and several margaritas at Rio to get the whole story, but yeah, 'The Parents' tell us they had a great time - especially because they got to see you.
As I understand it, your new coat is basically an insulated cocoon with legs and arms to make it look like a coat. It should keep you nice and warm!
Now you have to find one for Tanya too.
Enjoy,
Terry
Re: The Parents Haha yes, it is basically "a sleeping bag" as mom described it. It's quite long, too. Apparently long puffy coats are trendy eight now, although I was definitely more interested in the warmth factor!
This Will Get You Out and About Hi Katie,
A very introspective blog this week. Since I've known you all your life, I can say you are a very amiable person - so I'm not the least concerned - 'this too shall pass' and other trite sayings come to mind.
But here, I DO have a suggestion for you. Invite some foreign visitors to spend a week with you - take them to the grocery store, the laundromat, go shopping and to restaurants, etc. Pick some Americans (they're totally ignorant of 'foreign stuff') - pick Liberals, maybe even from Boulder, to counter balance Trump being there.
Judy tells me your parents aren't available to go to Rio tonight - I wonder what they're up to?
Anyway, your posts are the greatest - looking forward to the next one,
Terry
Re: This Will Get You Out and About Hi Terry, thanks for the suggestion, haha. It's been great having them here so far, and we've gotten out quite a bit already, although I do have to work in the afternoons/evenings. But having them here has definitely made me more aware of the (lack of) late-night restaurants in my neighborhood!
Teaching :-) Hi Katie - Was thinking about your time in Korea as I was at a workshop on Korea yesterday given by Teaching East Asia. Motivation, culture etc., of course all play a part in classroom. Sounds like you are working to figure out what to do when the dynamics of the class aren't favorable.
Keep the blogs coming. It's nice to read about your experiences in the ROK. Someday I hope to make it there.
Challenging students Sounds like you had some challenging students. I found rewards are sometimes the only way to get thru to those who aren't self motivated to learn. Love reading your stories ms. Katie
Re: Challenging students Yeah, I'm thinking a rewards system will be the only way to get them to do any of it, really. I assigned them homework this weekend and only received about 10% of assignments....
