Asia » China » Beijing » Forbidden City September 29th 2010

Finally on my second visit to China and third attempt I actually got into the Forbidden City. Although we did have a run in with some camera sales staff that was a bit stressful. The forbidden city is the most enormous house in the world, I expected it to be huge but until you go through it you can't appreciate the sheer scale of all the buildings with their incredible detail. It really is an incredible place. I was thinking how proud it must make chinese people feel to go there. The outer court is full of huge courtyards and massive 10 story buildings designed to intimidate and awe people at the emperors power, but further on in the more private areas it is full of gardens and is still impressive but far more personable, the ... read more

Well we are on our way finally, after weeks of not booking anything we are totally organized and at great prices ... I think. Jack and mrs Hu are in Beijing already and really keen to see us. clarkson rant #1 - Hong Kong and Beijing airport all have free wifi but Sydney you have to pay ! so backward and annoying ! Well we made it to Beijing, someone was late in picking us up (mrs and mr Hu) Beijing is as I remember it but with about one million more cars - the traffic is insane, and insanely packed. Michael made a comment which I think is right that all the cars are new and all the buildings look no more than 20 years old, its so strange to see a city where so ... read more

So in 3 weeks we will have FLOWN 26,000 kms DRIVEN 1200 kms WALKED 200 kms CYCLED 14km and it has been awesome The two things i was worried about - the food and toilets have been fine. The food has been incredible, and I have mastered the floor loo (although you always keep an eye out for a sit down loo and use it whether you need to or not and don't forget your own paper everywhere you go) The Chinese people have been very friendly and helpful, everywhere you go you are almost always the only caucasian and you get plenty of looks, some smiles, lots of 'hellos" and the occasional giggle. I haven't been robbed or felt at all in peril (as some people warned me). I would reccomend seeing China with someone ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing October 4th 2009

The last two days in Beijing have been fun but I'm beggining to think being here during national holidays was a mistake. There are just so many people, even for China. We attempted the Subway and it was so busy. So we caught a bus, traffic jam. Then we walked na that was a human traffic jam. You just have to use side streets as much as you can and trust to luck. Despite this it's been fun. Beijing has a great climate this time of year, warm with a nice cool breeze. W checked out some of the huge shpping malls and districts here - amazing. Even saw a few Aussie stores here, and a Boost in Shanghai. Had a great family meal with Jacks's Father Stepmoom and her daughter (who speaks english). It was ... read more

Asia » China » Shanghai October 2nd 2009

Today in Shanghai was beautiful weather so we started walking in search of the fabled soup dumplings (Dumplings with hot soup in them). On the way we went past the Shanghai museum which was free today and had a massive line up. We decidded to give the museum a miss and found a restaurant. The soup dumplings were good but I wasn't blown away by them, perhaps I've had sooooo much good ffood I've become spoiled. We then went to Nanjing Rd (a major shopping area) and caught the subway uNder the river to all the new huge buildings. If I'd thought there were a lot of people at the museum I was wrong, on Nanjing Rd, on the subway and everywhere there was literally a sea of people. Walking through them was like swimming through ... read more

Yesterday was mostly spent in airports so I don't want to talk about it - except about 200m from our Hotel at 1am I was asked by a lovely girl if I'd like a massage. I don't like massages so i respectfully declined - I think that's the first time I've been asked that, It was weird. Today is National Day - the 60th anniversary of the Peoples Republic of China, the communist state that was formed by a civil war in 1949 by chairman Mao. Everywhere we have been in China there has been plenty of build up to this week of holidays and I have never seen so many red and yellow flowers in my life. To mark the anniversary there was a huge parade in front of the Forbidden City through Tianamen Square ... read more

Asia » China » Yunnan » Lijiang September 29th 2009

On our last day in Lijiang we spent the day chilling out around the area. Only 80yuan and three minutes walk from our hotel is the Black Dragon Pool. this is a beautiful waterpark with bridges, buildings, traditional Chinese music, Naxi dancers and pools and waterfalls everywhere. Unfortunately Jade dragon Snow Mountain was covered in cloud but the scenery in the foreground was still fantastic. Lunch was at a little restaurant nearby called Crossing Bridge Restaurant and you guessed it we had crossing bridge noodles - and they were great. My Chinese friends are always amused because I always finish my meal unlike them. I explained that in Australia when you are young if you don't eat everything you get in trouble.. After Lunch we drove only a few minutes away to a little village called ... read more

Asia » China » Yunnan » Shangri-La September 28th 2009

For the second day of our tour we headed up the canyon by bus to some really cool, steep gorges. steel framed timber walkways had been bolted to the smooth rock face on one side as we clinbed 700m up many, many stairs. This path actually goes on for 4km but had been closed further up as a rockfall had taken out a section. Apoparently they will in the future be doing 5 day hikes up these ravines. The next, and main gorge path was alot easier and was dead flat following the main river for 2.5km. This was really relaxing and nice, and for 120 yuan we caugh inflatable zodiacs back to the resort to see the canyon from the waterline. Lunch, packed into the bus and we were off. We headed back for the ... read more

Asia » China » Yunnan » Yangtze River September 27th 2009

We booked in with a tour company out of Lijiang to see a whole bunch of canyons, mountains, temples and more. I was a little apprehensive over whether we would get value, see cool things and be on some Contiki thing. BUt it was excellent. We all pilled into a twenty seater bus and headed off into the hills. Going was slow as we were on secondary road with lots of traffic going both ways on both sides of the road while looking over the edge of incredible high mountains. We made plenty of photo stops and one was interesting. it was my first sight of the mighty Yangtzee river. the spot we saw is where it comes out of the Himalaian platteau and then makes it's first U-turn. The reason this is significant is that ... read more

Asia » China » Yunnan » Lijiang September 26th 2009

Today we left Chengdu behind (after more delays at the airport). We were met at the airport by a high school friend of Jacks (Mr Jong) whos family runs a really cool hotel right next to 'Old Lijiang Town'. Also Jacks stepmum joined us and well for this visit to a small town in Yunan province. Apparently Lijiang used to be very popular with foreign tourists until ten years ago when Chinese tourists really started to come here. I can see why as well, it only gets to 2 degrees in winter and uyp to 25 in summer, the old town is a beautiful example of traditional architecture (Chinese and Naxi). - Naxi is an ethnic group that lives around this area. They are well known and misunderstood for their matriachal system of society. They have ... read more
