We checked in, dumped our bags then headed out to check out Windhoek… it didn’t take long, the CBD is very small. We walked up a street to a famous german church and on the way walked past a street market of touristy goods, a bunch of women were there selling figurines and jewellery, they are called the Himba and wear mud over their bodies and have amazing hair, with almost like thick dreadlocks and wear thick necklaces. We walked down Independence ave, the main street and down a shopping mall. We had lunch in an Italian restaurant and had nice pizzas. We bought dinner from pick and pay, the supermarket nearby. That night we went to bed early, very tired from not a proper nights sleep the night before on the bus, but our room ... read more

The bus turned up and was totally empty! We were the only people on it for a little while, but we picked up 2 more passangers in the Drakensberg mountains on the way to Durban, 2 guys from Holland, Bart and Kinsing. We chatted on the way. We stayed in a place called Hippo Hide and arrived just before sunset. The 4 of us had booked in the same hostel, so we walked together to the supermarket and cooked dinner together since it made it cheaper. We went to sleep after watching a bunch of big bang theory episodes together. Next morning we had brekky together early and took the bazbus together at 6.30am. We got off the bus at a tiny village called Chintsa on the coast, beautiful place! Buccaneers backpackers has the best view ... read more

The bus ride to Cape Town took a maximum of 2 hours but was probably less. The bus driver was named Sidney and he was more of a tour guide! As we entered Cape Townand drove past landmarks and townships he gave us the rundown of the city. Finally we arrived at Sunflower stop with Bart and Kinsing too. The place is nice, but reception was already closed (it was past 8pm) and the bar tender showed us to our dorm. We thought we were in for a noisy night since the walls separated our room from the long hallway didn’t reach the ceiling (temporary aluminium) but after a few beers and dinner we were all very sleepy and slept really well! Next morning the boys left to go on their long awaited shark dive and ... read more

Next morning we got up, had the free brekky, checked emails, skyped my mum and dad and then just got ready to leave. We ate the left overs of last nights dinner that we cooked for lunch then at 2pm we loaded into a tiny little car with Henri our guide and another guy from the backpackers to drive us to their camp. The drive took about an hour and a half and the camp is inside Marloth park, on the boarder with Kruger, literally. We arrived at the gate and Henry (a different younger one) was waiting in a safari vehicle with 3 people from Spain. We hopped in and went for a little safari inside Marloth alongthe fenceline with Kruger as well. We saw Giraffe, Hippo, crocs, Impala and Zebra as well as many ... read more

After the crocodile farm we headed to the restaurant for lunch, it was pricey but oh so worth it! It was so delicious! Chicken in mustard sauce and an amazing veal casserole, topped off by having chocolate soup at the end, basically a very thick and amazing chocolate mousse. We wandered back down to the lemur islands and watched for a while waiting for the car to return at 2 to pick us up. When it came off we went back to our hotel, the other aussie had had a great few hours in the national park and said she found it amazing since it was primary forest and most other parks here at secondary forest, so the trees were massive! When we got back to the hotel we tried to figure out a timetable that ... read more

Next morning we got up at 7 and packed everything then bought a cheap breakfast, 2 bagguettes and some happy cow cheese then met up with the other couple at the taxi-brousse station. They had already organized our t-b so we paid the man and got in, we had to wait of course till there were enough people for the driver to go. Surprisingly we left when there were still seats free. We made a few stops on the way to Ranomafana, including a town that must have been having some celebration or market day, the street was packed! We had to go really slowly so people could move around the car. Finally though we arrived at the national park entrance where there is a hotel called Rianala and we all got off there (its about ... read more

Well the dinner was great! Zebu steak for me (type of big horned cow with a big hump on its back) and a traditional Malagasy (Madagascan) dish for Dario, both delicious. Of course we tried a local beer, Ambree, very nice! Then we went to bed exhausted. Next morning we had brekky at 6.30am then grabbed our things and took a taxi to the taxi-brousse station (basically mini van which are public transport) to take one to Fianarantsoa, 10 hours south. We managed to just miss the morning one, we didn’t want to wait until 2pm for the next one so instead we got on one that was heading to Ambositra, 5 hours south. We had to wait in our seats (we had the best ones since we were one of the first people in the ... read more

First blog of the second leg of our trip. So for over a month we stayed in Sydney, just bumming around and planning more things for the Africa trip, it went really fast! This morning (2nd June) we finally got on a plane headed for Johannesburg (via Singapore). We arrived at 9, booked our bags through (we did an online checkin earlier) and had brekky with the families. There was no queue at customs so managed to make it through rather quickly and got to the gate very early. The flight was pretty average, bad plane food and a weird choice of movies. But we managed to nap a bit, and 8 hours later we arrived in Singapore! Changi airport is awesome! We took the skytrain from T3 to T2 (where our onward flight goes from) ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 25th 2011

Sorry for the late update. So, we took the boat from Colonia to Buenos Aires at sunset. The view of the city as we approached was pretty beautiful. We were a bit cautious as we left the terminal (our bags were the last ones on the carousel!) and we took a taxi for 50 pesos (ripoff!) to the hostel we thought we had booked over the net. But they were full (saturday night in BA with a U2 concert on) so they tried to help us find accomodation, but eventually i found some dorm beds on the net. We took another taxi to the next hostel and were in a 12 bed dorm, kind of separated by a semi wall, so we shared a smaller area with 6 beds, with 2 british gals. The place was ... read more

That night, we had organised to meet with Victoria (Dario´s 2nd cousin) to go out on the town. We picked her up in a cab from her place and she took us to a great place, packed with people for a great pizza and beer dinner, was delicious. We chatted and then decided to go to Fun Fun, a bar up the road that is kind of an institution there. They were charging a cover so we decided to go elsewhere and went to a cute little bar and got some drinks, 1 capirinha for me, yummy and strong lemony drink, and a grappamiel (kind of a honey liquor)for Dario. After our drinks we took a cab to a place nearby after the bus didnt turn up. It was basicallya heineken bar, they didnt sell any ... read more
