Rhine Getaway is truly a gem I couldn't agree more with your blog. We just finished this cruise, and also arrived early and stayed at the Hotel Basel. This is our 3rd Viking River Cruise. We have done the Grand European from Budapest to Amsterdam. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see Amsterdam, as we did not do a post stay. When this cruise came up, we concluded we would do a post tour in Amsterdam for 3 days. We did have overlap from Koblenz up to Amsterdam, but we still enjoyed it. We had not been inside the Cologne Cathedral on our last visit as it was Nov 11th and they have a mini-carnival in town. We had the opportunity to see the interior of the cathedral. We arrived in Amsterdam on April 1st and were on our way to Keudenhof Gardens and the flowers were spectacular. The season starts March 23rd and goes for 8 weeks. The next day we did Holland in a day. We visited Volendam, Maren, and the Zaanse windmills in the morning. We visited Delft, The Hague, and Maturdam in the afternoon. It was a long day 8-9 hours and should have been satisfied with the morning trip, which was the best. Learned how to make cheese, wooden shoes, and how a windmill sawmill works. We did a cooking class the next day which was superb (Cookyourlife) and departed back to the USA the following morning. The other Viking trip was Paris-Normandy and it was equally as good. We have found Viking River Cruises to be the best. The staff, program director, city guides, food, level of service. The attention to detail makes you feel very at home. Upon arriving back from tours, you will be greeted with a hot towel, a drink of something, a pastry, or something else that you were not expecting. We are scheduled to do the south of France in the fall on the Rhone River and looking forward to it. All three of the Viking cruises that we have been on have been nothing but the best and look forward to being with them again and again in the future.
THANK YOU! My family and I have been planning this exact same river cruise for about a year now. For some of us in our party of 9 this will be our first cruise of any sort. Reading your blog entry gave me a better insight into what to expect and how to prepare for the trip. On top of that, it got me even more excited than any of literature put out by Viking Cruises. Thanks!
