Found our hotel; Playa Hermosa Bosque del Mar, beautiful place right on the beach. Mike & Victoria and kids drove up from Guacima to meet us there for the weekend. Weather was hot and dry. Kids played in the pool and on the beach every day. Nice safe beach with easy surf so the kids could go out and play in the waves, no worrying. First thing, we were all standing around the pool when a family of 8 howler monkeys comes walking through! There was a giant tree straddling over the pool and the monkeys came to eat the yellow flowers off the tree. As we're watching, dad monkey lets out this horrible noise like a wild boar, then we see them all and they came right up close, to get the flowers. Mom monkey ... read more

We left the Arenal area in the rain, sheets of rain, but the temp was hot. I had heard lots about the drive north around Lake Arenal but had no idea how bad part of it would be. The lake is man made, after the volcano erupted and covered part of the town of Arenal in 1968, a few years later they made the dam and flooded the valley to make this enormous lake and re-located the town. A guy told us that if you go on a boat in the lake you can see the church steeple sticking out of the water from the flooded town. The views were spectacular, driving around the lake in the rain forest, but the road needs work. There were mudslides across the road, some with vegetation already growing on ... read more

After 3 days in the city learning the ropes, we went off on our own with our GPS- we call her GyPSy. The route to Arenal was amazing, scary and beautiful all at the same time. The tiny road took us through villages and over mountain ridges, all the while dodging pot holes and negotiating curves. We found a 'typical soda' to eat at - it's our goal to eat the local food - instead of at tourist restaurants, and it was really good. Even the kids loved the arroz con pollo piled high and shaped like a volcano! We had casados - means marriage - a mix of beans, rice, plantain, chicken, and this one included a beet & potato salad. Our hotel was spread out over a huge property on the slope of the ... read more

Travelling on American Thanksgiving turned out to be a good thing; the border & highway to Seattle were empty and getting here was really quick. Early next morning we flew to Dallas and on to San Jose. Mike & Kevin picked us up at the airport and we drove to their house. Victoria and Mike built their home in Guacima, a more rural area of the city, very quiet street just a block from the main roads so everything is close by to them. Harry & Sophie re-connected with Kevin & Marina immediately like they had never been apart and they kept each other entertained for the next three days. The first morning (Sat) they took us through Alajuela to see the mercados. We can count to 100 in spanish but all the prices are in ... read more

One full day in Barranco area of Lima. Our flight's at midnight so we just have the day but booked a hotel so we could sleep and shower. Wandered aimlessly for ages looking for a Cevicheria for lunch, finally stumbled on one. Did not love Barranco, an area of old mansions in need of a good cleaning and restoration, it was nice to see but we wish we could have had another day in Centro Lima. Stayed at Victor Delfin's home, Second Home Peru, lovely house right on the cliff, filled with his art. Steps go down the cliff to the pool....cool. Red eye to Miami then the whole day sleeping on the beach and stayed in a Deco hotel. ... read more

We´ve spent the past 3 days in Cusco again. Sunny and warm. We´ve spent our time shopping, touring all the museums and eating. Doug tried Cuy, guinea pig. It was so funny, it came on a plate wearing a tomato crown. We saw the Koricancha and the Cathedral which are both Spanish colonial churches built on top of the Inka foundations, toured in a group tour the 4 sites just outside of town. We both agreed never again would we do a bus tour, it was just a few hours and we had a guide explaining everything but it was the other people in the group that were so annoying. We were always waiting for someone or someone was complaining etc. We´ve never done a group tour before and won´t do it again. The markets are ... read more

We had early morning train tickets, the driver was to come for us at 5:30am. The 3 dogs at the Kuchi Rumi walked us to the front gate, we´re glad they know it´s ok for us to be wandering around on the property. We could not believe the state of the road. After yesterday´s strike the roads were ¿open? again. There were boulders and tree stumps the size of cars littered across the road for as far as the eye could see. There was a small path bulldozed through and around some of the rocks to open the road again. This is the main road that takes every tourist to the Machu Picchu train in Ollantaytambo or to the start of the Inka trail so it is targeted to make a point. Our driver deftly dodged ... read more

Strike day in Peru, we are stuck in the Sacred Valley. The roads are blocked with rocks, can´t go anywhere. Luckily we arrived here yesterday - not today. We needed a day of rest, feeling the altitude. This place is a beautiful rural acerage just outside of Urubamba with andean homes on it, run like a bed and breakfast, it´s called the Kuchi Rumi. ( info@ urubamba.com ) We spent the day listening to Peruvian music and napping. Claudia, the owner produces whatever we need, the fireplace is lit at night, fresh flowers throughout the house from her extensive gardens, 2 fulltime gardeners are planting and pruning all day, there´s a creek running through the property, birds on the windowsill, enormous hummingbirds sipping all the flowers. We needed this forced day of relaxation, they thought the ... read more

Sacred Valley - Chinchero - 3760 meters altitude. We had driver, Herman, and English speaking guide, David. ( davidm14499@hotmail.com ) This was a bit of a splurge but we wanted to understand what we were looking at and David gave us a full history lesson. We drove from Cusco into the Sacred Valley but along the way we would stop at some villages in the mountains with beautiful ruins and churches. Chinchero has a colonial church with a painted ceiling about 500 years old sitting on top of the Inka ruins which are even older than that. Maras was the next stop, all the homes are made of adobe brick which is just the red soil and straw mixed together (the soil here is like PEI, dark red). Along the drive we see men making the ... read more

Driver picked us up at 8am, his car all cleaned out, playing Peruvian music on his stereo, crucifix hanging from the rear view mirror which he would touch occasionally and then make the sign on the cross on himself. He needed some money for gas - adelente (thank goodness for rosetta stone spanish lessons) then we were on our way to Pisaq, up and over the mountain and into the Sacred Valley. We stopped at a llama farm outside of town where they demonstrate the weaving and dyeing process. All the ladies there speak Quechua not Spanish and so did our driver. He would speak to them and then translate to Spanish for us! ha ha but we mostly did understand. On to Pisaq ruins, a huge mountain of Inka terraces and stairs. The sun was ... read more
