So after not too much deliberation and some last minute inspiration, I booked a flight to India leaving in a month. I'm not sure how its all going to pan out, but as soon as it was booked and confirmed, its like the planets aligned and everything else fell into place.

This is where I will blog my experiences, insights, photos, videos and other random shenanigans that you can imagine will take place in a place like India.

Hope you enjoy and perhaps join me for the next trip!

Goa is to India what New York is to America, like a separate land flavoured with Indian spices yet so very different to the rest of the country. Palm trees edge long stretches of sandy beaches over which the sun sets each evening. Beach huts, clubs and restaurants come alive to the sound of the waves and the beats emanating from them, which die down after 10pm, ensuring some peace and rest for holiday-makers. OK, so I stayed in a quiter part of North Goa (Ashvem) where there is still room to unwind on a laybed on the beach. Unlike surrounding beaches, where parties, drugs and music were as consistent as the hawkers selling anything you can think of on the beach. I arrived in Goa after a 14 hour bus trip from Mumbai, exhausted after ... read more

My last night in Varanasi ended more spending. I was hunting the markets for a present to get my nephew, more specifically, an army style watch with a compass. I asked someone (who I later found out was named Rahul) who sure enough knew someone who owns a quality watch shop. And of course, in the land of India where anything is possible, a small watch shop had one army style watch with a compass. Rahul, who was very sweet, bargained with me, took me for some aluchat (a local street snack which is like a potato dumpling served in a leaf with a spicy dahl type sauce for 10 rupees), after which I felt very much obliged to 'see' his shop. No obligation to buy, right?! I walked out having spent 3000 rupees on spices, ... read more

The Holy City! I've been here for almost a week now and it's definitely my favourite city in India so far! After experiencing the evening ceremony on my first night in Varanasi, I was up at 6am the next day for a sunrise boat ride along the ghats. The sun is quite dull amongst the morning fog but seeing the city from the water sheds a whole new light on it. We saw most of the ghats along the holy Ganges including the cremation ghats. Photo's are not allowed at the cremation ghats. There are 2 ghats used specifically for cremation ceremonies and Hindu's travel from all over India to have their loved ones cremated by the holy Ganges, the belief being that this will break the re-birth cycle. Up to 800 bodies can be cremated ... read more

I think I've been living in a bubble of excitement and adrenalin from relieving my travel bug during my first week in India, because on the train to Varanasi it finally hit me. As the train arrived, I realised I didn't have a seat number. Frustrated and tired, I was lucky enough to find a group of Dutch tourists with a guide, who checked my ticket number and said I was on a waiting list. Great! When the train came, I checked with one of the train workers who let me know that luckily I was confirmed and gave me my seat number. The train was half an hour late to depart, and I was somehow under the false impression that as it was 650km's away, the journey would take about 7 hours. I found my ... read more

Namaste! I thought I had seen it all when it came to Indian traffic, then I came to Agra. Delhi has some form of structure in comparison. There are silent rules in play in Delhi which don't seem to exist in Agra, or maybe they just have their own rules. Chaos. Arriving in Agra at around 2pm, I was taken to a local restaurant which came with a multicuisine and a nice price tag. I got stuck into a large Kingfisher beer and a Thali straight away (Thali is a bit like a tasting plate - usually a curry, dahl, rice, salad and yoghurt served with naan). Finishing my beer accompanied by a cigarette outside, I was joined by the owner. We chatted for a while after which I noticed he was looking at my hand. ... read more

Namaste! They call Rajasthan the colourful state - and not without reason. Rajasthan welcomes you with splurts of colour, like a Jackson Pollock painting. From the bright pink bouganvillea running alongside the road to the women's exquisitely coloured sari's that can be found on the back of motorbikes, on the side of the road or working out in the fields. Pinks, oranges, reds, greens, blues, purples all glistening in the sun and standing out like sore thumbs in the otherwise dry landscape. My driver picks me up at 8:30am and we're heading for Jaipur - capital of the Rajasthan state. Only 250km out of Delhi, but on Indian roads being slowed down by cows, camels, horses etc, this took an easy 6 hours. Monkeys just casually hang out on the roads here, waiting for someone to ... read more

Namaste My first day in Delhi finished of with a massive diahhorea spurt in the afternoon. Hello Delhi belly! Thank fully, this only lasted that afternoon and I was again freed to experience curry amazement. Day 2 was Delhi sight seeing day. Woke up at 6am, shower, breakfast, cigarette (allowed in hotel room here and cost $2 a packet) and very very sweet milky coffee. First up was Jama Masjid - India's first mosque and second largest in the world, after Indonesia. Built by emporer Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1658. It can hold 25,000 people in its courtyard, so you can imagine the immensity of it. I'm not going to go into detail about the monuments on here, its something you have to experience for yourself. Even the photos or videos I took don't come ... read more

Namaste! Arrived in Delhi on a very smoggy Saturday morning at 6am. After 20 hours of flying, stopping over in Abu Dhabi and never being able to sleep on a plane, I'm pretty exhausted. Thankfully, customs and baggage collection goes smoothly and I find my guide holding an A4 sheet of paper with my name scribbled on it. He awkwardly leads me to my car transfer, which seems like miles away, and off we go into the big smoke. I'm asked to pay for my tour in American dollars, which I didn't have, and so after 5 phone calls in Hindi and some compromise, I'm taken to a very dodgy atm on the side of the road to withdraw 30,000 rupees and pay the man. And so I did. My driver leaves me at the hotel ... read more
