Love your photos, especially the ceramics, bank and dental building. I am curious that the hotel is empty. I can understand not many tourists but I would expect business persons. Ashgabat looks like a ghost town. Where are the people? I was happy to see school children.

Hello there
Glad to hearing from you guys. We figure we have a few good years left yet but probably not going to too many adventures trips much longer. I am going to India in Jan. 2020 with my quilting friend. Ray decides he will skip that one.

Why no people?
All the big hotels were built and own by the government. Turkmenistan had 11,000 tourists last year and that was about 1000 a month, hardly have enough to fill all the big hotels they have. Ashgabat has a population of 100,000 but most people probably don't come to center town where all government buildings are

Hi H-M, A very informative blog, although I couldn't get all the photos. We are thinking of doing the "stans" in the future. Thanks for sending materials from MIR. It looks like a good company, although we may go with OAT. We just completed our 11th trip with them to Colombia and Ecuador. It was excellent! One question: How would you rate this trip compared to the many others you've taken? Our next trip in June will be to the Baltic sea area visiting Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia and Germany. Safe travels, Jay
