I've been home for a week now! The time has flown by. I miss all my friends from the trip. We had a google hang out on Wednesday night. It was nice to "see" them again. My mom and I made a picture slideshow. It has a lot of pictures, so it's pretty long. I tried to include a little bit of everything from the trip. Here is the link you can copy and paste: http://www.smilebox.com/playBlog/4e4445774d6a63324d54493d0d0a&blogview=true... read more

Sorry I haven't blogged in awhile! But I'll recap the past few days. Monday July 21: We went to Kyoto for the majority of the day. First we went to the Kinkakuji Temple. It was very pretty, and made with gold. I'll share pics later. I also got some souvenirs here. Next, went to the ShinKyogoku area, which had lots of shops and restaurants. We had lunch here and shopped around. We ate at another okonomiyaki restaurant- my second time on this trip. But at this restaurant, you actually cook it yourself on the table. Then we went to the Kiyomizu Temple. There is a big street with tons of souvenir shops, so we spent a lot of time shopping there. We left Kyoto and came back to the institute. After dinner in the cafeteria, we ... read more

Saturday 7/19: I woke up, packed, and got ready for the day/weekend. Then I went down to eat breakfast in the cafeteria, as always. We met in the lobby at 8:30 to depart by bus for Semboku HS. I was very nervous. The weather wasn't as hot today and it was a little cloudy, but it was still humid. We got to the school and some families were already there, but no one from the Omoto's had arrived yet. I sat down and waited, then the mom walked in and we met. She was very nice. Later, Runa (my buddy) came in. She had track practice, so she was a little late. She looked tired and sweaty since it was so hot out. I rode in their car to their home, which was an apartment. The ... read more

Today I woke up, ate breakfast, then went to class at 9:00. In class we are preparing for the presentations we have to make at the end of the trip at a completion ceremony and farewell party here at the institute. Then I ate lunch in the cafeteria, and then got ready in my semi-formal attire because we were going to visit the US Consulate in Osaka at 1:00. We took the bus and it was about an hour ride. When we arrived, the Semboku HS students (our host brothers or sisters) were standing outside. I didn't know they were coming, but they visited with us also. At the Consulate we had to go through metal detectors and couldn't bring in phones or cameras, etc. The building was high security. There were even police/security standing in ... read more

Continuation of Wednesday 7/16: After our lunch break and another short class, we got to have our cultural experience at the institute. We had the choice of yukata or ikebana. I chose yukata, which I think was a good choice. It was fun dressing up and taking pictures. Then we took the bikes out to Aeon Mall and a nearby thrift shop. I didn't get anything at the thrift store but I got two shirts at the mall. We biked back and had dinner. Then I did my laundry, which was harder since everything on the machines was in Japanese. I just hung out waiting for it to be done so I could get ready for bed and go to sleep. Thursday 7/17: I woke up and got ready for the day. I haven't gotten as ... read more

Tuesday 7/15: Yesterday we checked out of the Sendai Ark Hotel because we were leaving Sendai later that day. We visited East Sendai High School. We were partnered up with a Japanese student and we did activities with them. My buddy's name was Asuka and she was really nice. She didn't speak much English, and I don't speak much Japanese but we both tried. First at the welcoming ceremony there was a girl who played the shamisen. She was amazing. She had won some contest and was the youngest one to do so. After the opening ceremony, we went to a Japanese tea ceremony demonstration. It was in a traditional Japanese room. First we ate the sweets and then they made tea for us and taught us how to drink it. Then, we tried to make ... read more

So it turns out that we actually do have wifi at the hotel and it's connection is a lot better than the institute in Kansai has. So yay for blogging ability. Yesterday (Sunday) morning we ate breakfast- and juice is really good in Japan. They rotate the type of juice in the cafeteria everyday for breakfast, and it's always so good. So far my favorite is apple. When I come back to America I might be a little disappointed in our treetop apple juice. We also packed our things for our trip to Sendai. Our rooms are going to be cleaned while we are gone so we couldn't leave anything sitting around. We went down to the lobby to assemble and depart for the Osaka-Itami airport at 9:30. The bus ride from the institute to the ... read more

Apparently there was an earthquake up north today, but here it was only measured to be a 1.0 magnitude. We didn't feel anything though. So far on this trip I've experienced a small typhoon and earthquake already. This morning my friend called me at 6:45 and woke me up to get ready and go to breakfast together. We thought the cafeteria opened at 7:00 but it didn't until 7:30. We used the self-study room computers to kill some time. We had breakfast in the cafeteria buffet, as always. Then I got my things ready for the day. We were going to leave for Nara at 9:00. It was going to be hot today so I made sure to pack sunscreen and water. I've come to the realization that in addition to California roofs, I also really ... read more

I woke up this morning at around 7:45 then got ready and went to breakfast in the cafeteria. Unlike they predicted, the weather was very nice- sunny and hot. The worst of the typhoon had passed already, and it wasn't bad where we were. So, we were allowed to go outside of the institute today. Some of us rented bikes from the institute (they have a lot of bikes for us to use) and we rode to the mall that is farther away- Aeon. It was hot and the bikes aren't great, they're just one speed, so the hills to go over the two bridges on the way sucked. We got to the mall and shopped around- surprising. I only ended up getting some socks though. And a pear Fanta from a vending machine, which was ... read more

Updating the blog isn't as convenient as I had thought it would be. But, I'll continue to try to post. The wifi connection at the institute isn't very good so I'm using the self-study room computers. Also, sorry this is pretty boring- but I'm just going to tell about what I've been doing. In California on Monday, we bussed from the hotel to the Japan Foundation office in LA to continue with orientation. Part of the orientation included watching "Live Your Dream: A Taylor Anderson Story" which was really sad. She is one of the two people that the JET MIP commemorates. Family members of both Taylor Anderson and Monty Dickson were there and they spoke to us. It was a long day filled with lots of information about the program and why we were there. ... read more
