Saludos a nuestro dúo preguntando
Saludos a nuestro dúo preguntando. Love DAD

Wondering about your wandering
So glad to finally hear from you...We are fine here. I hope you have been taking pictures of all your adventures to share when you get back to reality. Sounds as though you have experienced all the sights and sounds of the mystery of the Galapagos. I hope you will keep us informed of your future travel plans as they are a mystery to us. We are once again having some unusually warm days for November. Savor is still in the water and we may even go sailing over THanksgiving break. Take care, we love you both, Dad

Greetings to the Galapagos
Thanks again for your informative blog. Sounds like you are having fum..more play than work..but I know you are also enthusiastically supporting the volunteer projects that you are serving there..Aren't you? Have you seen the tall ship from Master and Commander yet. How do you get back and forth from Puerto Baquerizo? We had a gtreat morning sail on Savor last Sunday, brisk breeze, bright sun, sailed across the bay to Baltimore light house (like sailing in Maine)and then around noon the breeze fell off and we had to motor back to Rock Hall... We decidied to leave the boat in the water a little longer hoping for some more cool, breezy sunny days. Hope you are being safe with that machete and in the water fall. Adios amigos, via con dios

jealous
EK and ZACK!! i can't believe your stories, and am incredibly ..i don't want to call it jealous.. just inspired by your adventures. i bet you will really appreciate having this blog to look back on - maybe not as much as us landlocked, studious burlingtonians appreciate it now.. glad you are enjoying the cervesas, peeping huge snakes and climbing 19,000 foot mountains. i guess i am jealous. but, at least there's still time to hit up duff hour, it's only 4:30. keep writing, and keep smiling! you guys are LUCKY! -ejp

bear face
Zack and Emily! again, thanks for continuing to keep in touch, I check every day and I read old posts on days when there are not any new ones. Emily, I like your style ( knowing how to put your feet up and have a few beers) and Zack, I respect your stupendous level of boldness -acclimation is for seasoned climbers who know how their bodies react to alititude (not for rookies!) - glad you saw right through that sham. Anyway, while you were climbing that little bimp of a mountain on the equator, Adam and I conquered a 4500 ft mountain in the "dacks" called saddleback mountain. There was ice, snow, and absolutely no dignity. We re-instated some of our hard lost dignity at adam's local brew-pub, browns. Anyway, your summit picture is my new desktop background, and I love the fact that you foud room in your bag for a pirate flag and neon green sunglasses.

Are you sure you are in Ecuador?
Emily and Zack, Thanks for sending the narrative about your climb and those awesome pictures. It is truly incredible to think that you were at 19,000 plus feet and so near the equator. That climb would probably leave the rest of us permanently disabled mentally and physically. Im glad you had the opportunity to make the climb and were successful. I can imagine hiking in that terrain at that altitude at night. How cold was it? Were there other groups at the base camp planning to climb? Did your guide have some kind of radio /GPS/emergency bearing device? Im trying to find websites that describe that mountain...Hope you recover quickly and catch up on your red blood cells in the Galapagos.

three things i learned about ecuador
I just read through the updates, sounds like you guys are having a great time. It sounds like an incredible adventure. I think i've learned a lot about ecuador through your updates: Always be polite to snakes, it never hurts to practice your machete skills, be wary of anyone offering ecuadorian pilsner - they may be trying to sign you up for invertabrate research, if you've got a spare mop- sell it on the street. I sent Emily a picture of a ridiculous electric hummer golf cart I saw in California - All I could think of was the Bronco's 4x6 wooden bumper going right through it. Anyway, keep going with the updates for us hosers stuck in the office all day! -nate

looking forward to your next entry
It's Friday and I'm looking forward to the weekend and hearing about your week (hint, hint!). Is this a beach Friday for you? Its peak foliage in northern Vermont so I'm hoping I can talk your Dad into taking some time off from working on the house next door to do some leaf peeping. You'll be happy to know that we're seriously thinking of going green and using bamboo for the flooring. We need to look into it a bit more though, because we've heard that since there's such a demand for it now, they are cutting down hardwood forests in Asia to grow it...trying to do the right thing is so confusing! We contacted James and he's anxious to help Dad with the numerous projects that have to be done before we can begin to rent the house out. Zack...wish you were here!!! Other news... Tomorrow Otis has his last test before becoming a certified Vermont Therapy Dog! Take care and keep blogging. We all love it!

smiling inspite of snakes
It's been a long, fairly stressful day. Hearing from you was a treat. Of course your descriptions (most) made me smile. I had been wondering about the socer game... glad the setting and scenery wre so awesome, the game exciting enough for you and that you didn't get stung. Walter sounds like the perfect guide for you. I still have to look up those tangare trees... glad you're contributing to saving them. The relaxing weekend sounds.. relaxing except, of course, for the snake.. That's the part that didn't elicit smiles. Our weekend - We went sailing Sunday. The bay looked like the ocean, big waves, some crashing all the way back to the cockpit and LOTS of wind. Gilly and Gurgi were very happy to sit right with me. Maybe you can tell us about the macroinvertebrates and we'll try a Northern/Southern hemisphere comparison. I guess you'll keep in shape hiking to town for "fine equadorian Pilsners". Keep in touch.

altitude
Hi Aunt Claudia, Thanks for reading the blog! It´s good to hear from you. The altitude of Quito, where we stayed for a few days and are going back to is about 9,500 feet (I think). The reserve we´re at is only at about 4,000 something, so not too high up. Higher than we´re used to though! The highest point on the reserve is at about 6,000 feet. We are in the middle of the switch from the dry to wet season here. The temperature is perfect!
6th October 2009

Is it the altitude?
What's a macroinvertebrate? The hiking and exploring must be a blast in that region of the Andes. Have you discovered any remains of ancient civilizations? Are you taking pictures? can you post some on your blog? We had a beautiful October day here today, bright sun, low humidity, cool breeze and the leaves are just starting to turn here. Can you describe cloud forest with more detail? is there a canapy? How tall are the trees? Have you seen any other interesting animals besides hornets, and snakes. What else is being maintained in that nursery? Keep blogging .

Hi Emily
Uncle Bob and I are enjoying your travel blog.! I read that the altitude bothered you a little, what altitude are you living at? And what season are you in? LOL, C.

lots of plants and animals
All this talk about plants and animals! I wish I was there...well, except for the part about seeing a poisonous snake. I hope your friends who got stung by the hornets are okay. Em...are you speaking a lot of Spanish? I'm happy to hear you are going to be doing some research, it sounds interesting. Keep us posted on how it goes. Adios!

Blogs, mules, smells etc.
Emily! and Zack! I have checked your blog every day, sometimes twice a day. It has been fun to be able to read what you two have been posting and try to imagine the sights and experiences (and smells). I am looking forward to hearing about the soccer game. Emily - I do not know what about you made that mule so cooperative, but I think you should find out what it is, and take advantage of it. This might be your super power, you need to learn how to harness this energy. Maybe you are the spanish speaking "mule whisperer". Zack, how are your spanish skills improving? Thanks for taking the time to share your adventure with us, and I am looking forward to reading your next post.

the food is good!
Hi Joe, The food is actually really good...except the salad because it´s very salty. Not sure why. However we were just informed that the delicious cookies that were made this afternoon for our dessert tonight were eaten by the owner´s dogs! Too bad. The milk is from the cows that they have on the farm. The weather is usually sunny in the mornings and it clouds over in the afternoon, which is much better for work. The temperature (at least for me) is always perfect. Things are going well so far, but maybe a little too much hard labor for me. Zack and I might try to start a research project either together or do two different ones. Then I don´t have to spend so much time macheteing. Glad to hear everything is going well at home/in PA and thanks so much for leaving comments on the blog! Barely anyone else is!

hola mamacita y papacito
Hola mi amigos, I really like hearing about your trip. I have nothing really exciting to say about America. Except freedom. But me and Sarah had a crazy experience in centennial woods at night with no light but cell phones. We were trying to find a camp fire that Calvin was having and followed directions to where it was but entered the woods on the wrong path. the trail ended up tapering off, and we decided we were in the wrong place and back tracked. Then when we were at a fork and weren't quite sure how to get out (I knew which way to go but sarah was unsure), we heard the sound of someone coming towards us and noone answered to our "helllo?"'s , So I started sprinting down the path towards the exit and Sarah was screaming my name and running behind me. We finally made it out. and met Nick. It was crazy. But I have a very busy schedule and wish I was in some foreign country as well. Have some more fun and bring home some bananas. -Caitlin

reply to mules, bananas, soccer and Tangare trees
What a wonderful way to end a long day (1:30 a.m.) - finding "we've got mail... from Equador). I'm sure everyone is glad to hear about your latest adventures. I am picturing Emily on the mule and Zack with a machete. The former is heartwarming. The latter is frigthening! Better Equador than our backyard! I'll have to look up a Tangare tree to see what it looks like. How big does it grow? How was the soccer? All is well here. Jake is completely moved into his new apt. Gilly and Gurgi helped! They like the sofa and Jake's bed. Don't forget, if at all possible, to wish Molly a Happy Birthday. She is 20 today!!!! WE're heading to Bucknell for a few hours this afternoon. I'll end... I don't smell terrible as I just got my shower but I have to concede to a little sleep. Keep fulfilling those childhood dreams and sharing your news,. Love Mom/Wendy

Buenos Dias Amigos
Thanks for the blog. It's great to have more details about what you are doing. What kind of milk was it, How are the bananas, How is the food? Are you bothered by insects? How is the weather? Everything is good here. Jake is finally moved and settled into his new apartment in little India ( most of the other families living in his new complex are Hindu) but his new place is very nice , he looks out through pine trees onto a golf course..the deck is bigger but the apartment is smaller, especially the kitchen. Keep blogging, It's always a treat to get your messages.

Thanks for your update
Zack and Emily, Thanks for your news and sharing the adventure with us. So far so wonderful..Glad you had a chance to travel a bit and see the country some more. When do you start hugging those trees and doing the real work you signed on to do. I imagine today you were out in that cloud forest enjoying that mild mountain air. Stay away from Brazil and Honduras as the people there are doing some anti government demonstrations against political injustice. I got that picture Zack sent on the cell phone, beautiful...We are fine..The dogs are well, Molly is having her 20th birthday this Friday, we are going up to BU for a short visit. keep on blogging, Dad.
