Well, after a week and a half at the lake, I am on my way to other destinations. I have spent my time here studying Spanish in San Pedro, climbing the Indian’s nose out of San Juan (4 hours round trip) which has a beautiful view of the lake and volcanoes. I am now visiting Santiago to see the Mayan God Maximon. Maximon is in a dim lit room with incense and his mortal guardians. The locals give him offerings of rum, cigarettes and money. Maximon is a wooden depiction of the God, complete with a cigar in his mouth. He is draped in silk scarves and has a sweet hat. If God was a pimp, it would be Maximon. Within the town is an old cathedral that holds traditional wooden carvings of numerous saints. They ... read more

I have decided to spend some more time in Central America. After traveling back to Antigua I hopped a bus to Panajachel on Lago de Atitlan. From Panajachel I boarded a boat to cross the lake to the town of San Pedro La Laguna. The town is all but in the sense of the word, but more of a large village. Many Gringos come here and never leave, creating a sizable bohemian/hippy community. The lake is surrounded by three massive volcanoes and the lake is a collapsed crater. I am spending a week here and have enrolled in Spanish Classes for 4 hours a day. The water is blue, the days sunny and hot, and the nights quite cool. Music is always to be found as well as a smile and greeting from locals and travelers ... read more

After spending two days in Tikal, I am yet again ready for a nap. On the hour and a half drive into the jungle Murry and I met a guy named Paul who decided to join our trek to Tikal. Nothing can describe Tikal. It is truly amazing at how massive it is. We spent two days at the park and still didn't see everything. The Mayans were a crazy lot, I tell you that much. The large temples soar above the jungle canopy reaching more that 150 feet above the floor of the jungle. Pizotes clamor about the ground (Pizotes are friendly forest rodents with a long nose and tail that stands up), spider monkeys swing through the tree branches, and howler monkeys call out in the distance. The first time you hear a howler ... read more

Well after another grueling bus ride from Antigua to Flores I am ready for a nap. I am staying at a hostel called Los Amigos, which is always packed with travelers from around the world. It is a nice little hostel with a tropical feel to it. A garden outside which is filled with hammocks, plants, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 parrots which randomly fall out of the trees. Tomorrow, I head to Tikal with a guy from Scottland named Murry who is headed in the same direction.... read more

After spending a few days in Antigua, I am now on my way back to Flores. It has been a great couple of days. I hiked up the volcano Pacaya a few days ago. This consisted of a 2 hour gaunt up the mountain, about 1/2 of it at a 40 degree incline or greater. At the crater you get to breath in noxious fumes and marvel at smoke (the brochures showed lava). Though the liquid hot magma remained hidden, the view was quit spectacular from the top. I have met a lot of interesting people from Washington State, France, and Israel. Antigua is a great little town and most people are friendly. I do not look forward to the 7 hour bus ride back to Flores :(... read more

I crossed the boarder and spent about 2 1/2 hours in buses before arriving in Flores. Flores is a beautiful little village on an island on Lake Peten Itza. I arrived late in the day, got a room and had dinner. I met a girl named Sophie and made plans to check out the caves the next day. The following day it rained all day. We hiked the mile to Actun Kan Caves and explored for about an hour. The caves are quite large and filled with bats (imagine that). Afterwords we went to get some lunch and I came down with a fever. I slept the rest of the afternoon and by the next morning was feeling much better. Since the weather was poor I decided to travel with Sophie to Antigua and catch Tikal ... read more

On February 4th I took a trip up to the Mayan Ruins of Cahel Pech. The ruins are about 1 mile outside the city and overlook San Ignacio. The site is pretty small, but is unique in the fact that you can go inside some of the buildings and see where the Mayans slept. Yesterday, I went to the Actun Tunichil Muknal Caves by Roaring Creek. It is about an hour drive trough rough terrain in a Bronco Truck that is powered by propane. The tank was fastened directly behind us and was continually bombarded by rocks and other shrapnel. If you are looking for excitement, this is the way to go. No bungee jumping for me. Strap a propane tank onto my back and through rocks at it. I highly recommend it for you thrill ... read more

After a crowded 3 hour bus ride from Belize City, I made it to the town of San Ignacio. I stayed with some friends at their jungle resort on the first night. The place is out in the boonies 5 miles from town. They have made the place very nice, but still have a long way to go. It will be very nice when they are finished. The following day I went to the ruins of Xunatunich. You cross the river on an old hand cranked water ferry and then it is a mile hike to the ruins. The largest Temple is 130 feet and you are able to see Guatemala from the top. I stopped into the Inn at Xunatunich after wards and met a woman by the name of Carina. We made quick friends ... read more

Finally made it to vacation! I got off the boat yesterday around noon and headed out to Caye Caulker. Which is a little island about a 45 minute boat ride from the mainland of Belize. I am staying at a hostel here and have met a couple of real cool people including a couple from Holland, Tony and Katie from Minnesota, and a group of girls from Australia. I will be traveling to the Cayo district in a few days to visit some friends who just opened up a resort there. Gotta go, more to come... read more
