Hey there everyone, sorry it's been so long since the last blog entry - Buenos Aires was so busy that we never quite got around to writing one while there. This one, therefore, will be a two-part entry written by both of us: the first part covering Santiago, Valparaiso and Mendoza and written by Jon; and the second covering Buenos Aires and written by Fern. Part I We left the balmy warmth of San Pedro de Atacama at twilight, a gorgeous glowing sunset accompanying us for the first part of our 23-hour coach ride to Santiago. The journey passed relatively quickly and comfortably and before long the next pink sundown was signalling our approach to the Chilean capital. Unfortunately it was less easy meeting up with Ruth, my sister, as Santiago has half-a-dozen different coach stations. ... read more

Hola amigos; here we are now in Chile, writing to you from the sleepy (and very touristy) town of San Pedro de Atacama. It's been quite a journey since we last wrote to you, so I guess I'd better start from the beginning... The day after our bike ride we decided to take a trip out of La Paz to a village a few hours North called Sorata, known for a nearby cave containing a pool historically believed to have healing properties. Though we didn't actually visit the cave in question, by the time we got there we were in serious need of some healing - the minibus driver's handling of the twisty alpine-style roads was even more hair-raising than on our taxi trip to Ollantaytambo (we privately nicknamed it 'Death Road part II'). So, it's been some time since we've updated the blog - mainly because it's taken a little while for enough stuff to have happened to make a worthwhile entry. So as a result of this, and of a case of one of us being cold and tired, this one's a joint effort (Fern wrote it out, Jon's typing it up). As Jon mentioned, we went horse riding on our last day in Cusco; what he forgot to say however was that due to the intense mountain sun I ended up very sunburned (despite wearing factor 50) and then having got to Puno spent most of the next couple of days in bed with sunstroke, which I can assure you is massively unpleasant. Just as I was recovering from this we both got food poisoning, so really ... read more

Such has been the cry a number of times over the last few days. It seems Cusco is full of the cutest things imaginable, so over the last few days I've been subjected to numerous requests for us to bring home, variously, several stray (or possibly owned) dogs, a couple of young alpacas, and most worryingly a cafe-owner's baby (admittedly absolutely gorgeous, but I'd rather not indulge in kidnapping to satisfy my girlfriend's maternal fantasies). So yes, the time since our last blog entry has been eventful - we've ridden horses round Inca ruins, gone up Machu Picchu to look round the lost city, gone round an artisanal jewellery workshop, and spent plenty of time just wandering and soaking up the sights and sounds of the city. Our search for the perfect lemon meringue pie continued ... read more

Hola, So quite a lot has happened since our last entry. We've left Lima, which in retrospect was a shit-hole, massively polluted and smoggy and to be honest, not a great deal to do, whilst being expensive. Before we left, however, we made a quick trip to Lima zoo. Zoos are normally a form of paradise to my inner five year old, but this one was actually pretty depressing. Whilst I am not exactly the greatest champion of animal rights (bit of fur or veal anyone?) this experience was a little bit awful. Massive lions and tigers kept in tiny cages, looking bored out of their wits, whilst crap animals like the llamas (which, by the way are Peru's equivalent of the sheep, and who keeps sheep in zoos?) had massive enclosures to roam about in. ... read more

So as the title suggests, the first few days here have been accompanied by much dog-spotting, especially shouts of "Look Jon, there´s a Baxter!" We´ve done a fair amount of just wandering about along the coast and into town, exploring and getting used to being here, but nothing really of note as yet. To be honest Lima doesn´t feel like the most exciting city - it´s different enough from what we´re used to to feel distinctly unfamiliar, without being properly crazy/exciting/out-there in the manner that a city on a foreign continent perhaps ´should´. We´ve been warned several times by fellow travellers to be wary of the locals trying to take us for a ride, and while it does seem like everyone´s got some sort of hustle, it´s not too difficult to get on with what you´re ... read more
