Thursday 24.2 – Kosrae Treelodge has some sea kayaks and we took them out for a morning paddle. Much of the island consists of the interior, then a backwater swamp that floods by high tide. Next is another strip of land where the road goes around the island. A shallow sea is enclosed by a coral reef. So the Bully’s – the restaurant at our hotel, is next to the backwater and we started from there. Johanne with me and Anders with Birgitte. It was high tide going low tide, so we started north against the current and you could actually go quite far. There were birds but not so much else animal life. The scenery reminded me of Chang Mai with slow rivers and tree covered hills. We saw no one on the trip, though ... read more

Tuesday 22.2 – Majuro – Kosrae, Micronesia Leaving Majuro, Marshall Islands. 45 minutes flight to Kwajalain atoll – also in the Marshall Islands. It is an American military base, and most people got off here. Nobody else were allowed off the plane. After 45 minutes the Island hopper continued and an hour later we were in the easternmost island in Micronesia – Kosrae. A lush and green island with high ‘mountains’ in the middle of the island. Similar to places like Bora Bora. We were the only tourists getting off the plane today together with 12 local. Mark from our hotel, Pacific Treelodge was waiting for us. He was hot happy with the tourist business – you were the only tourists on the plane? And Continental just cut back from 6 flights a week to 4 ... read more

Sunday 20.2 Eneko, Majuro Atol, Marshall Islands, Pacific Ocean The Robert Reimers Tide Table Restaurant is great. It is at the RRE hotel where we are staying - everybody do. Not much is happening in Majuro, but much seems to have changed since the 2003 Moon handbook where it was described as a 'slum' - it is not. Everybody on these islands speaks English, but still, it is obvious that it is not their first language. We ordered oatmeal for Johanne, but got cornflakes, which she tried to make us accept. Something similar happened to a woman at the next table. Most visitors here are on business, it seemed we were the only tourists here. It was mostly clouded today, but we were still looking much forward to the trip to Eneko – one of the ... read more

Thursday 17.2 O’ahu trip, Hawaii Todays we wanted to go to the north coast to look for surfers and to see the Pearl Harbour memorial. We were off at 8, but at the Pearl Harbour memorial, we got tickets for the 9:45 show/tour to the Arizona memorial. The ‘come early’ advise applies – 1.3 million visit every year. The museum was very nice and on the ground there were different missiles and torpedoes – from second world war and also newer, like the tomahawk missiles etc. We would have liked to see one of the other attractions here like the Missouri destroyer, but each attraction was 60$, so we skipped it. It was a good movie, though I’m not sure what the japans visitors thought about it. It seemed that the exhibitions were ok on the ... read more

What a great day! Aloha Mallorca States of America. The morning started off 'as usual' with doughnuts from a local store at the balcony here at level 15 with views of Waikiki and the Honolulu skyline. Erik went to pick up the ordered Cabriolet which then turned out to be a brand new Jeep where the roof could removed – to the great joy of the children. Yesterday was great at Waikiki beach – a pleasant surprise. Not too crowded, no (almost) reclining chairs, no topless women, mostly elderly people enjoying reading a book at the beach, a few families like us with children who could swim in the shallow water, surfers further out waiting for the right wave, a pleasant temperature (25 degrees), no hawkers. All in all I was surprised how nice and quiet ... read more

North America » United States » West Virginia » Harpers Ferry February 11th 2011

Well arrived in the US, friday was a working day for my brother and family, so we opted for a small outing. The weather was wonderful just above zero and clear skies. Had thought about showing the White House to the children, but I had another idea to visit Harpers Ferry, 1½ hours away from Baltimore. Arriving, we could see it was a perfect time to visit - the parking lot had space for a thousand cars, and there were maybe a couple of other cars beside ours. A small shuttle drives along the Shenandoa river down to lower Harpers Ferry. The historic site is a nice place with interesting history and many small museums dedicated to persons or civil war subjects. A couple of places were open, like a small pub/restaurant where we had lunch. ... read more
