Hello all, I am not sure if all of you are aware, but I will be going back to India in a week from this evening. I'm going to be spending a little under a week up in Darjeeling which is in the Himalayan foothills. It is rumored to be stunningly beautiful. I will be taking my new camera set as photography is growing to be my main interest. I am thinking seriously about doing international photojournalism when I get my degree from engineering. So I hope to get enough publishable images from this trip to convince myself and other people that I have the skills required. My short-term dream is to get my photos printed and sell the prints and use the profits to support the orphanage that my brother Nate is helping out at ... read more

Well... Its over. I finally checked my bags into the counter and I am sitting here waiting for my flight to depart. Its been an emotional whirlwind the past few weeks that I have spent in Asia. I have had the most amazing time, and I owe a great deal of thanks to the Iqbals. They have been amazing hosts, without whom this trip would not have been possible. Last night we watched the World Cup with most of the people in DOHS. Nabil was still under the weather so I went with Samai and Issam and their friends. They are really into football and go so excited about the game. There were a lot of people there and it was quite exciting. Random fact of the day: In Muslim countries, they are unwilling to install ... read more

So, it rained a lot in Mumbai. Like an unbelievable amount. Anyone who has been watching the news has probably seen photos of flooding in Mumbai, where I spent the 4th to 6th of July. We got off the train and were dropped right into it. We were still groggy from the night and when we got off the train our cognitive skills were not all there. We had a reservation at the Hotel Volga II, but as it turns out there are three Hotel Volga hotels with half a block of each other. It isnt surpising that we were a bit confused. So a guy on the street asked us if we were looking for the Hotel Volga, and we said yes and he took us up to the Hotel. The hotel we thought we ... read more

Nabil and I went out for our day trip to the Ellora caves and left in the morning. We took a rickshaw to the bus station, but this time we actually took a bus. Im glad we did so that I could have the experience of taking a government bus over a short distance. Aaron was saying that they had taken a government bus for a 5 hour trip - not an exciting proposition - but it was fun for our half-hour voyage. The bus was quite rickity and I was quite pleased when we pulled up near the caves. There are a whole lot of caves at Ellora. The first ones that we visited were Buddhist, and most were in the same style as the caves in Ajunta, though the Ajunta Buddhist caves were better. ... read more

We awoke to catch the 7:45 rickshaw to the bus station. Our goal for the day was to get to the Ajunta caves and then spend the night in Aurungabad. Our trip began well, with our very helpful hotel manager getting us a rickshaw for us and our gear to the bus station. Once we arrrived there we were accosted by a tout who took us over to a share jeep. Now this was the first time we had seen a share jeep before, so we were quite hesitant. Share jeeps are basically jeeps that fill up with people and then head off to another city, picking up people and dropping people off along the way. It was pretty sketchy, and I finally convinced Nabil that we should give it a try. With that we were ... read more

Wow, 19 hours on a train? What are you thinkin? THats prolyl what you are thinking at this point. But 19 hours on a train is not like 19 hours anywhere else. We entrained at 1:30 am and groggily made our way to our berths. I took the top bunk and put all my stuff and me up on the bed. It wasnt the most comfortable situation, but it worked and I fell deep asleep. They had to wake me up to give me blankets. I eventually woke up after hours of restless sleep at 9 am. We had a breakfast of kabobs on the train and then I promptly went back to sleep. I woke again to have a lunch of daal, rice, roti and something very very liquidy which I poured all over my ... read more

Besides the Taj Mahal and avoiding touts there isnt a whole lot to do in Agra. The Taj is beautiful (photos to come), but there isnt much else. We arrived in Agra after a 4 hour train ride which proceeded without incident. The numbers on the seats were printed on the back which caused some confusion among the passengers about who was sitting in which seat, but it was quickly settled and we arrived in Agra. As in Jaipur there were loads of people trying to get us to get in their autorickshaw at the station, but we waited for a good deal and took it. We stayed at the Hotel Sheela, which turned out to be a quite nice tropical hotel with decent rooms. After getting settled we had lunch at our hotel, nothing special. ... read more

Our arrival was at 11:00am after getting up at 4am to catch the train to Jaipur from Delhi. The train was awesome, and only took 4 hours. They served us a meal and brought us tea two times in 4 hours. Plus we had loads of leg room. I still believe trains are the best way to travel. After fending off a number of rickshaw wallahs and autorickshaw wallahs, beggars, children, sales people, their relatives and friends, we were still stuck with one guy that walked with us for more than half a block. Nabil and I thought this was hilarious at first, but we quickly started getting annoyed. He wouldn't leave, even though we were getting progressively more pissed off and agressive towards him. Also, we were getting hopelessly lost. Jaipur is a confusing city ... read more

Ok, Im not going to pretend, this post actually happened in Agra. It is almost impossible to find all of the following in one cybercafe: 1. Monitor that is viewable 2. Internet that moves at a reasonable pace 3. Computer with either USB or a CD drive 4. Good keyboard 5. Tolerable temperature Anyway, here I am at a cyber cafe with all of these qualities.... Our arrival in India was inauspicious. The first thing that I had to do in India, even before we went through customs, was find a bathroom like the end of the world was nigh. In fact, I couldnt even find a urinal - all I could find was a squat toilet with no toilet paper. Welcome to India!! That night I went for a safe meal of nan to soothe ... read more

Today I am leaving for India, we depart for the airport in 1 hour. This is going to be a short post because I have some stuff to do still. Yesterday we went shopping a lot getting things for India - watch, alarm clocks, stuff like that. We looked for neck pouches for our valuables, but couldnt find anything. This morning Swapan went out and got us neck pouches made for us. It probably cost about 2 dollars and everything fits perfectly. Amazing! Anything can be made here and the people are quite ingenious. The ride back to Dhaka on the 21st was fine until we neared Dhaka City when it got dark. It was a scary end of the trip with cars flying around dark rickshaws and cars in your lane oncoming. Lanes here are ... read more
