October 9, 2011 Ah Kathmandu; mythical city, muse of Bob Seger, couldn't wait to get there...Nepal has been a top five destination for me for years, and I was excited to arrive and start exploring... First, the flight from New Delhi to Kat was very cool; about halfway there you could start to see mountaintops poking above the clouds, and coming into the valley during our descent you could see the low sprawl of Kat unfolding before you... The contrast was virtually immediate when we arrived; friendly! (Think we heard "Namaste" more before we exited the airport than we did the entire week we were in India). The plan now was to hang in Kat for a couple of days, head down to the Chitwan Jungle for a three day/two night jungle lodge package, then head ... read more

October 6, 2011 No visit to India would be complete to me without seeing the Taj Mahal, and as Sean and Jerlin hadn't been yet it was a perfect opportunity for the four of us to get out of the city and check it out... Agra is one point of what's known as the Golden Triangle of India, with New Delhi and Jaipur being the other two points. The plan was to drive to Agra and see the Taj Mahal in the morning/early afternoon, then drive to Jaipur to spend the night, get up and visit the Pink City in the morning and then head back to New Delhi in the afternoon...sounded simple enough to me, not exactly as it worked out... We did get up and on the road around 5:30am, and with the approximate ... read more

October 3, 2011 Well, here's a place I never thought I would be traveling to; but as my brother-in-law and sister-in-law were living here on a three year work term we decided if we were ever going to get to India then this was the perfect time...The plan was to hang out in Delhi for a week, spending most of our time in the city (with a side trip down to Agra to see the Taj Mahal) then up to Nepal for two weeks... Arrived at the tender hour of 3am and were greeted by the familiar and welcoming faces of Sean and Jerlin, who were gracious enough to come get us at this less than ideal hour. Made it back to their apartment in Greater Kailash (go E-block!) and chatted until the sun came up...needless ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Lovina October 29th 2010

This is a bit of a catch-all entry; not a whole lot to say about Lovina itself but as most of these adventures/pics occurred either going to or setting out from Lovina I figured it was just as easy to lump them all together into one blog... So after our return to Ubud and our less than auspicious debut in the rental vehicle we pointed the Toyota Avenza north, destination Lovina! Michael and Sue (the Australian couple we had met in Padang Bai) mentioned they were heading there as well, gave us the name of the place they were staying and invited us to join them for a few days...hmmm, okay! We had had a good time with them, and they offered to show us around the countryside so it sounded like a perfect opportunity to ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud October 28th 2010

Hadn't really planned on returning to Ubud but after looking at our car rental options in Padang Bai we came to the conclusion that it was the easiest and closest place to pick up a vehicle so back we went...plan was to just grab the vehicle at a place recommended to us by our new Australian travel friends Michael and Sue, hit some sights around Ubud and maybe find a place to crash in the interior on our way to Lovina...turns out there weren't a lot of accommodation options on the planned route, so we decided to hit a couple of sights in the area, return to Ubud to crash for the night and then take a leisurely drive up the interior to Lovina the following day... Made it to the rental place just fine, but ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Gilli Trawangan October 22nd 2010

After much discussion in Ubud as to what our next destination would be we found an inexpensive bus-boat combo to get us to the Gili Islands, so Gili Trawangan it was! We heard and read so much about these islands off the northwest coast of Lombok; no motorized vehicles are allowed on any of the three islands, the snorkeling is supposed to be fantastic and it's a real laid back vibe, all of which would be proven true with a five day hang on Gili T.! Our pickup was late in the morning, and then it was a mad scramble to get to Padang Bai where we were to catch our boat but managed to make it in the nick of time...fast boat to the Gili's is the way to go, certainly more expensive but only ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud October 19th 2010

After three or four days in Kuta getting our feet under us it was time to head out and see the rest of Bali, first stop Ubud! Hopped a bus and in no time we arrived, grabbed a cab to our hotel (Sama's Cottages) and settled in to a really cool cottage/bungalow in the middle of the jungle, nice! We were at the end of the lane, and with the exception of one cottage directly across from us it felt like we were in the middle of some remote jungle...fantastic...great place to stay, with the exception of what seemed like twenty or so roosters fighting and causing a racket each and every night...gah...haha... Ubud is reputed to be the cultural capital of Bali; and while there is a ton of galleries, dance performances and music, it ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta October 16th 2010

After far too long a break between trips it was time to get back on a plane and hit our next adventure: Bali! This was also a good excuse to get away and celebrate both a birthday and an engagement, and this seemed to be the perfect spot... Arrived in Kuta after a good 27 hours of flying and within the hour we were at our first hotel and cracking a Bintang in the wee hours of the morning, happy to have arrived and too tired to sleep...haha...on a recommendation from K's brother we were to spend the next three nights at the absolutely idyllic Poppies Cottages on Poppies Gang 1, completely recommend it; twenty individual private cottages, all with fantastic outdoor bathrooms, beautiful grounds, a gorgeous pool and very friendly staff. After wandering around the ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba December 24th 2009

Well, as the weather turns colder here in Canada thoughts and eyes turn to warmer climes... K and I decided to try Christmas and New Year's on the road, and after some deliberation it was decided we should return to Cuba and explore Havana some more (we had both been to Cuba once, doing the Varadero hang with a day trip into Havana, and had both wanted to return someday and spend more time in Havana). So the plan was to spend half the time in Havana and then hop a bus over to Varadero for some relaxing and beach time... Havana, what can I say, what a city! Think it rockets into my favourite top three cities visited, and I would love to go back and hang out some more. We arrived on Christmas Eve ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi April 7th 2009

Well, we made it to our last destination, Hanoi (well Hanoi and Halong Bay, lumping them into one post...). With only three days left on the trip this was unfortunately going to be a fairly brief stop... We arrived early afternoon and checked into our hotel, the Blue Paradise in the Old Quarter (as recommended by the agent at the Green Field in Hoi An...not sure if there was a sale on brightly coloured paint in Vietnam but it sure made the places easy to find...again probably from Space as well...). Anyway, dumped our packs and headed out to get our bearings...first impression of Hanoi was that the people seemed a little more reserved than the folks in the south...there wasn't the hard sell at most of the shops, which was kind of a nice change, ... read more
