Our night bus from Santiago to Pucon was wonderful...blankets, pillows, snacks, and foot rests all for $30! I popped a melatonin and woke up 7 hours later to the sun shining off the lake under the huffing cone of Volcan Villarrica (2847m)...stunning! Pucon was my winter adventure playground...the first day we hiked through the forest on snowshoes. We had an incredible view of the lake at the top and they had just had a fresh snowfall so we were making new tracks through the glades. We were surrounded by the snow-capped Andes and the sun streamed through the trees! It was definitely a good workout and we had fully de-layered by the time we arrived down the mountain ;) The next day was white water rafting down Maichin River (Class IV and V rapids)...WOW is all ... read more

Well I couldn´t have asked for a better final day in Santiago... I met up with my Brazilian buddy and we headed to a wine tour at Concha y Toro which is the largest exporter of Chilean wines. The harvest finishes in March so we couldn´t see any of the leafy vines but we strolled around the acreage and learned about the history of the family who brought all of the vines back from France. We even had a tour of their famour cellar...Castillo del Diablo...which only held the wine that was reserved for their family so it was the best of the best! We splurged for the wine tasting paired with cheeses (which was definitely worth it!). We tried 4 different reserves and each was paired with different cheeses, nuts, and breads...I tried to remember ... read more

The night before leaving for San Pedro de Atacama we all went out into the bohemian district - Bellavista - for some dinner and dancing. We found a great place that was pumping out Chilean pop with a few North American hits mixed in...good times! We met a few local Chileans celebrating a birthday and joined in their party. On our way home we thought a completo was in order...tasty!!I love Chilean street meat :) The next morning I didn't set my alarm as my flight wasn't until 1:40pm and I figured I would be able to have a relaxing morning...eat some breakfast, say good bye to everyone, and catch up on my facebook ;) Well...a buddy of mine came into my dorm room to wake me up at 12:45pm...THAT'S RIGHT....less than an hour until my ... read more

Well where do I begin...I´ve fallen in love with Chile! Not shocking for me to become attached to a country so quickly... My first week in Chile has been incredible! Exploring Santiago was wonderful - I met up with a few Brazilians so I´ve been learning Portugese as well...haha. I´ve taken a walking tour, sampled the street food (completo - Chilean hotdog with avocado...tasty!), danced in bohemian Bellavista, and spent the day at a vineyard sampling the wine and wandering through the vines... I also found my way to the coast to visit Valparaiso (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Viña del Mar (sandy beaches with wonderful seafood), and Renaca (smaller, quieter neighbourhood of Viña). It was beautiful weather and the food was amazing! I had empanadas from a local shop for lunch - chorizo sausage with goat ... read more

I´ve arrived safe and sound in downtown Santiago! Not shocking that I found the local bus from the airport to the metro, and then the metro to my hostel - ($4 total versus $25 with a taxi) it was easy and everyone is really friendly although I wish I had learned a little Spanish.... We drove into the city with mist hanging over the surrounding mountains - it reminded me of Vancouver a little without the ocean. It´s definitely chilly in Chile...haha! I´m glad I brought a couple of jackets. This time of year the skiing/boarding is a pretty big deal so I´ll probably hit one of the local mountains while I´m here. My hostel is cute - they served me breakfast (and I made my green tea!) with soft spanish music playing in the background. ... read more
