Good Lord, Education Queensland is starting to sound like a model employer... Hi Deb & Dee, Can understand why we haven't heard from you guys recently - Maslow's hierachy demands that you find food and shelter first! We complain about disorganisation and whinge about bureaucratic meanderings in Aust. - maybe we'd better stop... Glad to hear you are seeing some sights and making the most of it but we'd wish for things to get a bit easier on the daily living/affordability front for you. We're just back from 12 days in Adelaide for Alister's (brother's) wedding to the lovely Helen - he got the better end of the deal I told him. Do you know what you're doing? I asked her. So James has been nudging the red wine as well at Uncle Edd's place in McLarenVale - I stick to whites. Hope you're both well - thinking of you. love, Jo

Amazed by your stories and life I am enjoying your stories. I live in Sydney but am originally from Bris. I am married to a chilean and I was searching Mapauche on the internet and your blog popped up on the side. My husband and I would love to do something like what you have done. Was it hard to find work. I am a teacher would it be difficult for me to find work.
Working in Santiago Hi Sonya
Thanks for your comments. You are very kind. It is easy to find work here. You do need an efl certificate. expect to demo lessons or a grammar quiz at the interview. Altho there is plenty of work, you get from about CLP 5,500 - 7,000 an hour and about 20hours per week. This is not quite enough to live on. You can't go out or do much travelling.
I'll write a blog soon about my experiences. There are some pitfalls - including spending your day travelling all around Santiago and unreliable employers. Good luck with your plans.
Chile is a beautiful counrty and it's true - They have the best quality fruit and veges in the world!!
chao
Thanks Lyn We miss you too xxxxxx
Just survived my first bag -snatch. The young desperado failed in his attempt and Boy was he surprised when he heard me swear at him in chilean!!!
Blog-on, Deb! It was great to read both blogs at once. Wish our students were as a passionate about their education (re 2nd blog)! Jacob heads off on his 9 week exchange to Germany on 19 Nov. I will encourage him to do same. Keep scribing. Debb x PS Where are you working?
rich chile!!!!!! Chile is another fascinating story. Its recent boom is largely down to its wealth of natural resources, the prices of which have soared. But it also has favourable demographics and, quite rarely, very healthy pension savings. Sweeping market reforms, the only welcome legacy from the 1980s military dicatorship, left Chile as a nation of savers. The country's pension assets are equivalent to 72% of the total size of the economy compared to 33% for the average OECD nation.
Rich Chile Indeed! Chile has just passed 6months paid maternity leave. It is now like Norway and Australia. The Chileans are very proud of their OECD status, the only South American country to do so. They might be great savers - but it isn't the majority of the popn. The rich top is very rich. They are the good savers. The company I work for at the moment doesn't seem to care that its workers of 20years + are done out of their severence pay in a society that have unemployment benefits!!
Awesome blog, Deb. Great idea! Don't be bashful. We could never have seen all of the pics so easily (and related to the text) on FB. Keep it up and stay safe :)
Do you have enough warm clothes....? Despite the fact I belong firmly in the 20thC, this blog is actually a good idea! It certainly sounds like you're both having plenty of adventures - I'm very pleased you're well, enjoying yourselves and have found work. I will check your comments often. lots of love, Jo
I've scarpered off. Left Brisbane, responsibility, an unfinished Masters and children behind. Currently living and working in Santiago de Chile. My faltering Spanish (or should I say Spanglish) perhaps proves that age is a barrier to language acquisition. ... full info
