My wife Sondra and grandson Brody are taking a west trip to Wyoming, and South Dakota in the end of July and thought we'd write about our travels. I have relatives in both areas but plan on staying at whatever out of the way places we can while traveling. This is the 1st western trip we've made in the 15 years we've been together and although I've been out west several times over the years I haven't been there in the past 20. This ought to be a fun trip to show my grandson wife some sights they haven't seen before. Bighorn Mtns. Devils Tower, Mt. Rushmore, Badlands and then back home. Only 2 weeks away and looking forward to the trip.

Well we had a heck of a time last night in Deadwood at the Rodeo. Left Deadwood this morning and headed south toward Custer and all the attractions in between. 1st stop was Hill City and it was a very nice town to walk through. This is a very art based town and not near as touristy is Deadwood. Most of the Art is high end originals that were very nice but also very expensive. And of course being close to rally week T-shirt shops abound. Next stop was a cruise through the hills to Mt. Rushmore. We didn't take the main highway to the monument though we went down CR 543, and this was a good move. I think we only ran into 1 or 2 cars the whole way and was nice seeing some ... read more

After the battlefield we made our way over to Gillette,Wy to visit some family. I haven't seen my Aunt Carolle and Uncle Duane in a couple of decades and was thrilled to visit.. My Cousin Mike and his Wife Sarah and their children were also in town for a ball tournament so seeing them was a big plus. Always enjoy family visits whether it's been decades or just weeks. Uncle Duane had Brody to show all his toys and things to so I think everyone involved enjoyed the visit. Watched Nick play ball on Wednesday night and Thursday morning breakfast was excellent. Them Blume boys sure know how to cook b-fast. From Gillette this morning we were headed to Devils Tower Wyoming. Beautiful drive over plenty of Antelope and rural farm America. I could look at ... read more

Sorry no blog yesterday. We made our way from Buffalo, Wy. to the Billings, Mt. area yesterday to visit Custers Last Stand. A Must for any history buff.. We listened to a 1 hour history speach from a National Parks ranger who was a retired teacher and the information was GREAT!!! I believe Brody listened to the whole thing with intrest and came out learning a thing or 2. I know I did. It's sad to see how many soldiers died doing what their superiors told them just because they were tod to do it. The commanders at the time including Custer had an idea of what they were against and with their big bolstered egos chose to go ahead with the attack anyway.... The natives lead by Crazy Horse and Sitting bull did what they ... read more

Beautiful day in the mountains today. Started the morning by driving 15 mi. up in the Bighorns and taking a marked hike back into a mountain lake. Should have brought a couple of fishing poles. It's amazing how 2 hours west of here in Yellowstone there are 2 million people and we only ran into 4 or 5 small groups on a five mile hike here in the bighorns. Yeah you don't get the guysers but you get all the beauty with some solitude. Someday Sondra and I will go to Yellowstone when the crowds aren't so big in the fall or spring but not in the hieght of tourist season. The west breads a different kind of people. They are polite kind and very friendly. Sondra can't get over how nice they are. We ran ... read more

Well we made it through most of Nebreska and made it to our 1st Destination of Buffalo Wy. Had 1 little hiccup. Our car malfunctioned and we had to swap out in Casper. No big deal just a couple hours of time but we still put in 700 miles in 12 hours. Not too bad. Weather was very hot but not as bad as yesterday. Upper 90's and we did run into a few sprinkles. Fields are dry but it looks like they have had some rain. Western Nebrask is very nice as is Eastern Wyoming. Lusk, Wy. is a beutiful little town nesteled in some rocky hills.Very pretty and exceptionally clean. Sondra keeps commenting on how clean things are out here and I keep telling her that's because there aren't enough people to dirty it ... read more

Well we took off from Grand Rapids, Mi. yesterday @ 6:37am. Hopped in the car and away we went. Car is way overpacked and not much room left for the 3 of us. This didn't keep my 12yr old grandson Brody from falling right back to sleep though. 1st stop was Micky D's for breakfast sandwich.. Still cool at this time but 4 hours later when we stopped in Central Iowa it was 104 degrees. Hope the whole week isn't going to be this hot? No issues traveling except for the ton of traffic around Des Moines. Was cool to see all the windmills in Western Iowa though. Stopped in Blair NE, just across the border from Iowa for an Ice Cream at the DQ. nice break after 11 hours of driving. Drove for another hour ... read more
