Happy Birthday to Abby! She is 3 years old today. We docked in the port of Malaga at 7:00AM after another night of smooth sailing. We had a good buffet breakfast and were off the ship at 8:30 for a half day of touring. Malaga is a bustling city with a heavy rush hour (just like home) except the cars and scooters are still smaller than American vehicles. FYI, the price of gas in all three Spanish ports has been about 1.10-1.20 euro per liter which is about $7.00 per gallon. Our tour went to a picturesque little village of Mijas about a half hour away, on the hills 1200 feet above the Costa del Sol (one of the popular Spanish beaches). Mijas has been kept looking as authentic as possible, reflecting the early lifestyle of ... read more

We arrived in Cartagena on schedule, but our tour was not scheduled until 10:00, so we started the day in the formal dining room for a sit-down breakfast instead of the buffet. It was good, but took a looooong time, so we probably will not do that too many more times. But with a late breakfast, then we did not get hungry so early, because the tour was scheduled to last until after 3:00 and did not include a meal. Cartagena is basically a deep water seaport in southern Spain. It is surrounded by a large agricultural area which reports itself as the most productive in both fruit and vegetables in all of the Mediterranean. They grow various fruits (oranges, lemons, olives) and vegetables (lettuce, tomato, etc) for export across Europe. So being picturesque is kind ... read more

Buenos Dias from Spain. Well the smooth sailing ended with a bang, but fortunately not with a splash. During the night, a storm came up which the captain reported this morning as having gusts reaching Force-12 winds (that’s 70 knots or about 82 mph, or hurricane level-1). It was kind of bumpy and the wind whistled past the balcony and you could hear it bang against the hull, but everything was fine again in the morning. It is doubtful we will run into anything worse than that the rest of the trip. But maybe the lifeboat drill wasn’t such a bad idea after all. However we were more than an hour late arriving in Barcelona, so all the tours were late starting. Since ours was a full-day tour, everything was rushed to get through the whole ... read more

Europe » France October 26th 2010

Bonne jour from France. The first night of cruising was very smooth with hardly a ripple. We started today with a buffet breakfast and then a brief Mass held in a small chapel on the top deck of the ship. Then we docked in Toulon about 11:00 and we were off for another day of adventure. All five of us (Kathy, Jim, Rich, Janet, and I) were on the same tour bus (leaving at 1:00) visiting Marseilles. We grabbed an early lunch and were all set for the day. It was a city originally built by Greece and then conquered and rebuilt by the Romans, before it eventually became the property of the Duke of Barcelona. Eventually it became one of many independent pieces of France, and now has the second highest population in France. Fortunately ... read more

Today was our one-day anniversary of our wedding vow renewals, and the start of our Renewal Honeymoon. Breakfast was attended by everyone (nobody overslept this time) and was once again a great feast. We then had plenty of time to get our luggage down to the lobby and board our bus by 10:30. We have not yet discussed the drivers in Rome - they almost all drive Fiats or similar miniature cars (even some SMART cars), and they weave from lane to lane without much regard for the lines in the road. Then the motor scooters scurry around between the cars and it is an amazing feat when everyone gets through the intersections without any visible accidents. Both the cars and scooters appear to park wherever they like (including on the sidewalks and double parked in ... read more

We started with a very large breakfast (at least by European standards) included by the hotel. Well, actually two of us had a severe equipment malfunction and did not get up until they were called at 8:00 AM. With the bus leaving at 8:30, Jim and Kathy did not have much of a breakfast this day. But our group all met our guide for this day, Paula, promptly at 8:30. She passed out little radio receivers so she could talk to everyone without having to shout to be heard over the noises from other groups also touring - it worked pretty well. The first stop for the day was the Vatican. We had “no wait” tickets which saved us hours of time from standing in an incredibly long and slow moving line for admission. Clearing a ... read more

As said previously, we arrived on-time at Rome’s airport. First surprise was that we de-planed down the steps onto a taxi-way and were bused to the terminal. That was not a big problem except for our group member (Barb) who needs a wheelchair. We did not see her get down from the plane to the tarmac, but she appeared later at baggage claim so somehow it worked. Customs and Immigration were no problem and everyone now has an Italian entry stamped on their passport. Following a rather lengthy walk across the Rome parking lot, pulling all our bags with us, we boarded a private bus that was waiting to take our group to the Cicerone Hotel (4-star hotel within walking distance of Vatican City). Our rooms were ready and everyone went their separate ways for the ... read more

The first day of the trip was essentially a long airplane day. We managed to get everything for our trip packed in 3 suitcases and two carry-on bags (same for the Sieberts). The whole tour group (14) met at St Louis airport in plenty of time, the fully-packed flight to Chicago was on-time and was smooth, and our next departure gate in Chicago was just a short walk from where we arrived. We had plenty of time for a mid-afternoon lunch at O’Hare. The flight to Rome left on time and likewise was pretty smooth but was also full. Airline food is nothing to write home about, but it is the first in-flight hot meal we’ve had in many years (choice of chicken or beef), so we are writing home about it after all.  It ... read more

Welcome to our BLOG, for our flight to Rome and cruise back to the US via France, Spain, and the Canary Islands. Our trip begins with an overnight flight from Chicago to Rome followed by a couple of days touring in Rome. Since the Rome hotel may not have internet access, you may not see any updates from us for the first few days. But we will keep a record of our Rome excursions and you can catch up to us when we get to the cruise ship (Navigator of the Seas) on Oct 23 and can start posting. So keep checking back for updates. :-)... read more
