On paper it was an innocuous, routine inter island flight but somehow I finished up one step away from the amplified snap of the rubber glove and being requested to, "walk this way sir". You can't blame the good ol U.S of goddamned A for being gun shy, particularly in and around airports, but a general warning readers: "don't wear pants with brass buttons on the pockets when attempting to board a plane ANYWHERE in this land". Kauai had better be worth it. Last time around Kauai was worth it, that being 32 years adrift, but I needed to be prudent to bathe in the nostalgia of Memory Lane and not drift down Melancholy Lane. Melancholy Lane? Back in those heady days Kauai was my favourite but the possibility of my version of "a paradise lost" ... read more

Sure the Big Island is the biggest, but you can't have a biggest without a second biggest. Step up to the plate Maui. While she's less than a quarter the size of the Big Island, some of the driving times are extensive enough that you still get the sensation of a road trip whilst navigating the rental around the island. I mentioned in the previous blog how all sealife should be high tailing it straight to Hawaii due to its temperate aqua living conditions. Whales, specifically Humpbacks, being smarter than your average ocean dweller, have tuned in to the message, if the numbers we bore witness to are any indication. The body of water between Maui, Lanai and Molokai plays host to God knows how many of these doyens of the deep. At any time of ... read more

The Big Island? I suppose it's all relative and in respect to the rest of the Hawaiin chain, The Big Island is mammoth, large enough to become the namesake island for the entire state. In reality, Hawaii is barely a small fraction the size of Tasmania but let's not become too bogged down with semantics. Having said that and whilst firmly brandishing my poisoned pen, if your sole exposure to the Big Island was Kona, you may be tempted to bestow another monicor, something akin to "The Feral Island". Some may consider Kona's "colourful local identities" as unpretentious, others probably figure the spirit of Mount Druitt or The Bronx will never die as long as these folk maintain a pulse. Fortunately for the Big Island, she crams in a slew of alternative spicy attractions and was ... read more

I've managed to break down tired into 2 rough categories. The first is the biproduct of sleep deprivation and is what we felt following 36 hours of non-stop travel and transit stops enroute to a wee little surf camp deep in the Mentawai Islands off Sumatra's west coast. Travelling is not an exact science and to paraphrase Steinbeck: "the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry". Such was the case initially with our 12 day package to Pitstop Hill. The entire process looked watertight on paper until Steinbeck's line began ringing in my ears as our flight out of Sydney was delayed 5 hours, which in turn negated connecting flights and reservations that evening. Frantic phone calls, emails, the cool runnings of Pitstop Hill management and liberal dobs of smiling co-operation from Garuda ... read more

Hey, it's Terry Wiley's quote, not mine, and whilst it's mildly appropriate there is a pronounced emphasis on the Nearly Deads rather than the Newly Weds, though I'm still not exactly sure where Penny and I fit in with those categories. Newlyweds 19 years ago and hopefully about the same before nearly dead. Delve deeper and I would suppose Terry's little quote was intimating that if it's cultural immersion, pulsing nightlife or life style with edge that you seek in a destination, then perhaps you would be better off booking plane tickets to Varanasi, Paris or Ibiza. If, on the other hand, the great sub tropical outdoors is your poison then Lord, Howe have you managed to miss this place. (I bet that pun has been bandied about the odd thousand times or two). In terms ... read more

Before leaving, certainly in Australia at least, if I mentioned to someone I was going to Christmas Island, the inevitable responses revolved around asylum seekers. Eventually I had my stock standard repost down pat: "Mate, if we manage to spot any Tamils, Afghans, Iraqis or any other boat people for that matter, on the Christmas Island I'm visiting, then they've boarded a boat that's overshot the mark by about 10,000 klms. Pull out an atlas and you'll find that Christmas Island Part 2 is one dot in the mighty nation of Kiribati, smack bang in the middle of the deep blue Pacific Ocean. Then again, even sprouting the word Kiribati would usually lead to some puzzled looks, maybe because they had never heard of it, had no idea where it was or perhaps more realistically they ... read more

After our debacle 10 years back in the Solomons, courtesy of Solomon Airlines, confidence wasn't at its peak with the narrow changeover between our international flight from Oz and the subsequent inter island flight scheduled only 45 minutes after touchdown in Honiara. But, Hey Presto, our fears were unfounded, initially because Solomon Airlines have lifted their game dramatically and also because we were assured the ongoing flight would wait for us. Wait for us? How many airlines would delay a flight for 2 plebs like us? As it turned out, we 2 plebs comprised 40% of the entire passenger list so they really couldn't take off without us. Five passengers plus pilot nestled into a lawnmower with wings skating up, around and under cloud banks with textbook tropical islets dotting the ocean below. The landing strip ... read more

The heading being my attempt to paraphrase one of THE great rugby league commentary clichés and superimpose it as a metaphor for Penny’s significant birthday sojourn back in Bali. THE FIRST HALF The away side (aka us tourist types), came out of the blocks with all cylinders firing up in Ubud. Our hotel was textbook Balinese style crawling out of the surrounding jungle and on the periphery of Indonesian Main St rice paddies. Penny was mighty impressed with these digs and was looking like she could easily acclimatise to this level of accommodation on all our trips. Note to wife: DON’T GET TOO USED TO IT! So what does one do in Ubud for 4 days? Most of the time the husband follows the better half into every conceivable shop muttering inane responses along the lines ... read more

Ya reckon Vancouvers got a homeless issue? HA! Seattle laughs in your face. In comparison, Vancouver is a veritable Monaco. Seems like every second person has an angle for some sort of freebie. It's a downsided backdrop on what is otherwise a seemingly fantastic city, an enigma if ever there was one. A modern skyline is punctuated by Bohemian enclaves, bustling waterfront markets, groovy cafes and bars, and trendy shops, all with this infusion of down-and-outers loitering amidst. A wonderful day was spent delving into the bowels of Seattle but with one eye constantly on our valuables. Highlights? Well now you mention it: 1. The weather - it may have been patchy at best but we did manage to unfurl the sunnies, if only for a few minutes. In a city that "boasts" 300 days of ... read more

Whistler in December and you really don't have a great deal of choice in terms of what particular colour you'd like your Christmas, white seems pretty much a given. On the drive up from Vancouver, rain eventually turned to snow with the increase in altitude and with the mercury for the next week hovering on or below zero, Bing's dream of a white Christmas was a guaranteed reality. Skiing was on the agenda which provided a recipe for disaster. With a total of 5 hours skiing between Penny and myself over the last 30 years, and that was in 1996, confidence wasn't high. But hey, turns out this skiing gig is like riding a bike. Within ten minutes we were both back to our pathetic levels of 30 years prior. Of course our travelling cohorts, the ... read more
