Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097The Louvre is a big place! If you want to see some of it without huge crowds, try to get there early. That was our goal today, to arrive when the museum opened at 9. We started walking a little after 8 and, according to Google Maps, it is a 2.2 mile walk (so Mom, maybe my pedometer is not so incorrect after all). It was a cloudy and cool morning and the walk along the river was nicer than the evening before when we were already tired from a long day. We arrived at the intersection with the Champs Elysees, which is the location of the famous Obelisk. This was a gift from Egypt and is also the area where the guillotine was located during the French Revolution. Thousands of people, including Marie-Antoinette ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097Today was another day of walking, this time around the Chateau and grounds at Versailles. Our plan was to catch the 8:39 RER C train and get breakfast when we got to Versailles. Well, the ticket machine at the station would only do one ticket at a time and would not take my credit card and there was an elderly couple in front of us so we missed that train and had to wait about a half hour for the next one. The ride was very smooth and you can't miss your stop as it's the last one. You also can't miss the Chateau unless you don't follow the hordes of people all going in the same direction.I didn't even know what I was looking at was the Chateau until Renee said it was. ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097Today was a day of walking. I had found out about a free greeter program where you sign up and are assigned a greeter based on your interests. We thought this would be a great way to get an introduction to Paris and it's free so that's even better. Our tour guide was Jean-Patrick and he was to take us on a tour of Issy les Moulineaux which is in the 15th arrondissement. We left the hotel about 8:15 and stopped at a cafe for breakfast. Pain du chocolat for all and fresh squeezed orange juice for me. It was delicious! The metro was necessary to get to our greeter appointment so we learned how to buy tickets and navigate and it was very simple. I bought a book of 10 tickets, except I ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097In less than 24 hours, we traveled through 3 countries to arrive at our vacation destination of Paris! Our plane left O'Hare at 10 PM on Thursday night. We were at the airport in plenty of time, waited through the long security line (with a very friendly TSA agent who helped lighten the mood) and sat at the gate to await our flight. Left on time and had a very smooth flight. I think dinner was probably served an hour after we took off, but I was trying not to look at the clock. They served a rather delicious pot roast with mashed potatoes and carrots, a salad, warm roll and lemon square for dessert. It was a pretty good meal for being on an airplane. Our seats were in row 22, which was ... read more

Geo: 33.6936, -78.8827My last day of course had the best weather of the entire trip. Sunny and warm with not a cloud in the sky! Now if the whole trip could have been like this...I left the hotel and headed north on Hwy 17. I stopped at the Visitor Center on the Mt. Pleasant side to take a picture of the Ravenel Bridge which looked so nice in the sun! Then continued on my way towards Myrtle Beach. My stop for the day was Brookgreen Gardens. This is one of the top 10 public gardens in the US according to Trip Advisor. The entrance fee is $14 and is good for 7 days. I think you get your moneys worth in one day (I spent 4 hours here), but if you like to spend a lot ... read more

Geo: 32.7812, -79.9316Today I took a drive south on Highway 17 to check out Hunting Island State Park, which is south of Beaufort on Highway 21. The entrance fee is $5 per person and then an extra $2 if you want to climb the lighthouse. It was a drizzly morning, but I started off with a climb up the 167 steps to the top of the lighthouse. The view was nice, but probably would be even better on a clear day. I headed back down and then walked towards the beach even though my legs felt like jello-o! The waves were nice and big thanks to the wind and I did walk down the beach a ways even though it was drizzling. This beach is great for finding shells and I'm sure it's also nice for ... read more

Geo: 32.7812, -79.9316Late last night I received several emergency alert text messages about flash floods and thought my whole day today would be a wash out. Turns out it was a fairly decent day with only some light mist at times to drive people indoors. My plan was to start at the farm market, but I checked their Facebook page before leaving the hotel and found out the market was cancelled for today. Bummer! But no worries, there are plenty of other things to do in Charleston, even on a dreary day.I started off at the Visitor Center. I find this to be a great place to park and make as your base for exploring Charleston. Parking is not free, but is a maximum of $16 per day and all other parking areas seem to be ... read more

Geo: 32.7812, -79.9316My very favorite place in Charleston is Drayton Hall. There are many reasons it is my favorite, but the main one is the fact that this is a place of preservation, not restoration. Drayton Hall is the oldest unrestored plantation home in America and has survived the Revolutionary War, Civil War, earthquakes and hurricanes. It has survived modern progress and is just a joy to visit. I recommend arriving early so your house tour is on the smaller side. The first time I went, it was just me. This time there were 12 of us on the tour. I even think the tour guide we had today, Tara, was the same one who was my first guide. The tour begins with information about the beginnings of the home and property. Drayton Hall was the ... read more

Geo: 32.7812, -79.9316Today I visited places I had not been to in my previous two trips to Charleston, Boone Hall Plantation and Charles Pinckney National Historic Site. The morning started off a bit brisk. It was in the low 40s when I ventured out to the car, but no snow so a positive sign! Both sites I planned to visit are located off Highway 17, a little north of Charleston in Mt Pleasant. I took the less congested route of I-526, which goes around the city and has several nice high bridges over marshes and portions of the Charleston port. Once back on Highway 17, the turn for Boone Hall is a left at a light and there is a sign shortly before letting you know the turn is coming up. The admission price is $20 ... read more
