Asia » Vietnam September 1st 2011

Sat 20th August – Wednesday 31st August Vietnam was the last leg of our journey before hanging up our boots and taking on our next adventure of life in Oz. Keen to get cracking, we wasted no time in booking ourselves seats on the very first departure out of Pnomh Penh the morning after arriving back from our tropical paradise. The bus took us over the border without fuss (our pre-arranged visas worked a treat!), and into the big, busy, noisy, steaming concrete jungle which is Ho Chi Minh City. Our first impressions didn't improve as within seconds of stepping off the bus, we were mobbed by hawkers offering us ‘tourist advice’ and 'very special accommodation for you Mr and Mrs'. We had batted off many a hawker on the Asian leg of our travels so ... read more

Asia » Cambodia August 19th 2011

Wednesday 12th August - Wednesday 19th August 2011 Having followed through with our new approach to long distance travel, we stepped off the flight feeling nice and refreshed (the alternative was a 24+ hour ropey bus trip from Vientiane in Laos). We were ready to take on Cambodia, first stop Phnom Penh. Our period of ‘luxury travel’ ended at the airport car park where we bargained with a tuk-tuk driver for the journey into the centre of the city. Instantly, it felt worlds away from our beloved Laos’ peaceful, sleepy towns and streets. Instead, Cambodia's capital city was heaving with hustle and bustle. To put it bluntly, it was chaos…..but somehow it felt like organised chaos at the same time. We were in the riverside city long enough to see below the surface and we soon ... read more

Asia » Laos August 10th 2011

Thursday 4th August - Wednesday 10th August We lay awake the night before our departure from Chiang Mai wondering just how safe the bus journey through the mountainous jungle region of northern Laos was going to be and if our chosen route was the right decision. Only about a week ago tropical storm Nock-Ten swept in from the coast of Vietnam in the north, flooding much of northern Vietnam, Laos and regional areas of Thailand. Having read reports, we were concerned about landslides, the quality of the road, the possibility of further torrential rain and getting stuck halfway in the middle of nowhere! However, our other options were an expensive flight on the reportedly dodgy Laos Airlines or a very long detour via Bangkok. It could mean missing Luang Prabang all together. We decided we would ... read more

Asia » Thailand August 4th 2011

Wednesday 13th July – Thursday 4th August We’d been looking forward to Thailand, the land of smiles (more like lady boys!) since before the start of our whole trip, and it felt great to arrive in ‘civilised’ Bangkok (it’s all relative) after our mentally exhausting time in India. We headed straight for the backpacker mecca of the Khao San Road, dropped our bags and ventured out into the night. The street was alive with market stalls, street food vendors, music from bars and tuk tuks winding their way through a whole heap of other travellers soaking up the atmosphere. A green curry, a few Singhas (local beer) and a Sangsom ‘bucket’ later, and we were swinging in hammocks adding to the mood, now part of the scene rather than the wide eyed onlookers of a few ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra July 13th 2011

Monday 11th July – Wednesday 13th July After a brilliant ten days back in the UK with family and friends filled with parties, dinners, lunches, cups of tea and country walks, it was time again to say our sad goodbyes and head off on the last two month leg of our six month adventure, on a one way ticket bound for our new home in Sydney. As our flight to Bangkok had a stop in Delhi we decided to take a three day glimpse of life in Delhi and Agra, and visit the magnificent Taj Mahal. Once out of the brand new airport, built specifically for the Commonwealth Games last year, it was incredibly sad to witness the all too evident struggle for life in the overpopulated, poverty stricken capital of Delhi, and its surrounding regions. ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail July 4th 2011

Sunday 19th June - Thursday 30th June We booked our places on the Inca Trail trek over five months ago, so it has been a symbolic mark on the calendar for a long time now for two reasons; the first, it being such a famous trek culminating in the beauty of Machu Picchu (one of the new seven wonders of the world), and secondly, it marks the end of our South American adventure. Arriving in Cusco, the centre of the Incan Empire, a couple of days before the trek started, gave us time to soak up the atmosphere of the Inti Raymi festival and prepare ourselves for the days ahead. By chance, the city was alive with processions of dancers in traditional dress, the locals singing and partying, and the old colonial buildings were covered in ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima June 29th 2011

Saturday 11th June - Saturday 18th June Having not yet visited enough handicraft markets on our South American travels for my liking, we headed to the town of Otavalo, a couple of hours north of Quito to explore its famous and very large Saturday market (reportedly the largest in South America). On our way there we passed though steep green hills, patchwork fields and dust blown villages that typify this part of Ecuador. As we crossed the equator at Cayambe, we stopped to celebrate our return to the Northern hemisphere (with a must have photo with me in the South and Chris in the North, trying to pull each other to the other side). Whilst full of gringoes looking for deals, the colourful Otavalo market still manages to showcase the Ecuadorian culture - stalls selling spices ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos June 28th 2011

Friday 3rd June - Friday 10th June Making the decision to visit the Galapagos Islands was tricky but after hearing that there were 200,000 pairs of boobies on the Islands, it was not in doubt for Chris! After much umming and urring about which boat to take, we opted for the large cruise vessel, Santa Cruz, due to its stability in the water for our Galapagos experience, and what a great choice this proved to be for us! Arriving at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno airport on San Cristobal island, we were greeted by friendly staff who escorted us down to the sunny pier where we would be boarding the boat for the first time. To our surprise, a lazy sea lion was camped out on a bench and when I sat beside him, he arched his back ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito June 20th 2011

Friday May 27th – Thursday 2nd June After our stressful few days in Puno, it felt even better to be in the 'White City' of Arequipa, which has a distinctly western feel to it. It even felt quite good to see the familiar signs of Burger King and KFC.....so it would have been rude not to get involved and man, a Whopper has never tasted so good! Nicknamed the White City due to its buildings being whitewashed in volcanic stone, Arequipa is surrounded by three volcanoes, all visible from the central Plaza de Armas. Unfortunately for the locals, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are not uncommon (the most recent earthquake a few days after our departure on 2nd June!), but we had had enough drama of late and our time here was very relaxing. We explored the ... read more

Friday 20th May - Thursday 26th May We didn’t hang around long in the hustle and bustle of the big city La Paz, heading to the shores of Lake Titicaca (the largest high altitude lake in the world) and a small friendly town called Copacabana, our final stop in Bolivia before crossing into Peru. The sun was shining and the town instantly felt like a local beachside holiday destination, albeit a little rough around the edges. The main street was buzzing with people wandering around, browsing the tourist markets for jewellery, llama fleeces and other nic nacs or sitting at one of the many outdoor cafés. We checked into a terrific wooden cabana overlooking the inland sea, which gave us a great place to relax, and at Bolivian prices it was considerably affordable. Lying in the ... read more
