C: We left Wellington on Good Friday heading across the Cook Strait on the aptly named Interislander ferry. It was really busy due to it being the start of the Easter weekend but we were very excited when they brought round (free!) hot cross buns. The crossing takes a little over three hours but the last hour is spent travelling through the dramatic Marlborough sounds which meant beautiful views all around. We collected our next hire car at Picton and then headed off to the centre of the Marlborough wine region, Blenheim. Very little is open on Good Friday so we were relieved to see a nice-looking pub directly opposite our motel. However, they have strange licensing laws which means you can't have a drink on Good Friday without ordering food. As we wanted dinner, this ... read more

R: Cate is taking a break from blog writing so you are stuck with me again. We headed in from Lower Hutt to Wellington and immediately headed out on the Miramar peninsular, home to Weta Cave. Weta made quite a lot of the digital effects and puppets, animatronics etc. for not only Lord of The Rings but also Avatar, District 9, and others and they have a small, free museum of props, plus a 25 minute DVD of their highlights. They also do tours but the only one they had going was a Thunderbirds are Go! tour, which was semi interesting to me, having been a massive fan as a child - but it is all to do with the new reboot which I'm not quite sure I'm ready for. They did have old-classic Thunderbird 2 ... read more

R: Next we had some time to kill. We took a scenic drive to Napier on the east coast over some exciting mountain terrain that was better than it looked on the map. We took our first obligatory trip to Countdown - a Sainsburys like supermarket that we seem to have spent half our trip in. After a quick picnic by the sea, trying to find Cape Kidnappers (so called as some Maori once thought the British were kidnapping a young polynesian child, who actually was working in their ship as a cabin boy). The area is inaccessible due to a colony of ganets, so we moved on. But it did look very reminiscent of Dorset cliffs. The area, Hawkes Bay, is full of wineries. This area is famous for its Syrah and Chardonnay. We arrived ... read more

R: It started off by me waking Cate up at 7:50. Never a good start. We were staying in Taupo, a town on the side of Lake Taupo, which is about 70km from the start of the walk. We headed off in the drizzle to the starting point, through a very nice road up to Tongariro national park. The weather was looking grey and wet but I was ever hopeful it might clear. By the time we got to the trailhead, it was bright and sunny! Cate dropped me at the trailhead at about 9:45 and I started the walk about 10am. Its a 19.4km hike over a saddle that sits between Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, which was used as the filming location of Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The terrain ... read more

R: After an epic 6 hour drive, we arrived in Rotorua at our motel. We were warned that the air here would carry a certain odour due to the volcanic field nearby but we couldn't smell it... That would soon change. There was a slight moment of panic when the motel was closed, but the owner was waiting in a darkened room for us... Our first day we headed for the Whakarewarewa thermal village which is a Maori village built in a thermal area of town, where the Maori guide people around the maze of bubbling mud, thermal pools, geysers etc. and have done for hundreds of years. In fact, one of the previous guides was the first Maori to study at the University of Oxford and is buried in a cemetery in Oxfordshire. We sat ... read more

C: We headed north from Auckland on Saturday morning. Our first stop was Puhoi where we had been recommended a cheese factory and shop/cafe to visit. It was a beautiful setting and there was some great cheese which seduced Roger into buying an overly expensive platter for brunch! Oh well. The cheese was good and the cheese was nice. After having gorged ourselves on cheese we drove to the coast and the strangely named Goat Island marine reserve. It's supposed to be a great place for snorkelling but the chilly wind and overcrowded black sand beach put us off a bit. We headed on and found a stunning stretch of white sandy beach at Pakiri, we were soon to realise this was the first of many, and were glad we did. After the obligatory British paddling ... read more

R: LAN airlines scrutinised our travel documents harder than anyone I have ever seen before. Our onward flight was checked. Our permission to stay in both New Zealand, and Australia (including our eVisitor) was asked for. We had to bring out the iPad several times to prove it. They checked in vain for a paper visa for New Zealand in our passports before agreeing that the British didn't need these to get into NZ! after looking it up. Begrudgingly, after 20 minutes (no exaggeration) at check in, they gave us a boarding pass. Which put us right next to Shelley, my walking buddy from Pucon, on the plane by complete coincidence. Well, after we moved the Chilean man who thought he could sit wherever he wanted. The flight departed at 00.05 on the 8th March. We ... read more

R : The evening before my birthday, we headed down to a Pisco bar I had found in Barrio Lasteria. It was pretty heaving, so we grabbed a seat at the bar. I had already decided it was going to be a Pisco flight - a tasting of three Piscos - and Cate had grabbed a Pisco cocktail with Earl Grey tea in it. The Piscos I had were all ok, but one stood out being more drinkable than the others. My favourite was Espiritu de Elqui 40. After joining Cate in another cocktail we stumbled back to our apartment - it's a long time since we've been out for 'drinks'. We woke up on my birthday to another blisteringly hot Chile day. After a bit of a bizarre "e-birthday" starting with the opening of e-cards ... read more

C: We arrived into Santiago quite late in the evening after a 12 hour bus drive from Pucon. Not a fun way to spend the day but the rest of the world could definitely learn something from the South Americans about comfortable buses, great reclining seats and loads of space. We got to our Airbnb which is a cute little duplex apartment on the 12th floor of a huge building right in the centre of the city, great location. The next morning we headed off to explore central Santiago. There isn't masses of sights but it's a nice city to wander around in, clean and smart, and pretty much everything is in walking distance. We found a very sweet district called Barrio Paris y Londres which is basically just two streets named after those cities. Lots ... read more

R: We arrived in Pucon in the northern Chilean lakes at about lunchtime. The bus trip was uneventful except for talking to a man at the bus station who was doing almost the reverse of our trip after retiring. Our hostel here is a bit far out of town but has incredible views of Volcan Villarica right from the window. But first we had to read the 2-sided rule card for the hostel, said the lady who checked us in. We found the England v. Ireland match on the TV so I nipped to the supermarket during half time to grab some empanadas. It's kind of like eating a pie. After the resounding win, we headed into town. Pucon is quite touristy, and overpriced, but very sweet. The buildings are all pretty wooden affairs and there ... read more
