I am in Mumbai, Thane, NE of the city center. I am being hosted by an Indian family, friends of a patient I cared for in Vancouver, CA. The hospitality offered is overwhelming at times. I arrived from Goa late Valentine's night to my hotel, my host/friend took me for dinner, had: masala popadum; this is a crisp flat round small plate size cracker made of lentil flour with a salty taste, sprinkled with finely chopped red onion, tomatoes and of course...spice, snacks of peanuts and little mini cheese crackers, skewered chicken, and vegetable roll things with mint chutney, a dish with homemade paneer (cheese), dahl and roti bread, accompanied with Sula Santori red wine. Ending with a dried fruit (which means nuts) little triangle of ice cream with an essence of cardamon. It was glutenous ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Patnem February 14th 2011

I heard some pretty strong opinions about Goa...too touristy, not the real India, greedy locals, greedy foreigners etc. What I discovered, after initially not liking it myself, was a place of such beauty and an arena for deep rest, healing and rejuvenation. As I went through my ayurvedic panchakarma a month prior, upon leaving the clinic I was told it can take up to 6 months to fully integrate, and defiantly the first few months to take it easy. I found being near the ocean a necessity to this continued healing process. Goa was teaching me how to relax...really relax, deeply, fully surrender. Goa also was teaching me how to love and care for myself, by being open to receive from the ocean and the beautiful people I encountered there. I was stopped from leaving by ... read more

Dawned on me last night, I have been in India now for over a month. Reflecting on my time here thus far; I have been through a mini panchakarma which has required time to recuperate and regenerate from, is still ongoing, as the ayurvedic healing, cleansing, balancing process affects all levels of a person, at least it has me. Spent a week on the Beach in Southern Kerala, Varkala. A beautiful vista of cliffs and beach, clear waters, light sand and black sand beaches, dolphins, fishing boats and excellent fish. Had my first King fish, butterfish, tiger prawns and KingFisher beer, which is a german style Indian beer, very refreshing in the heat and surf. Stayed in Kollam in the beginnings of the backwaters on a peninsula surrounded by water in a family heritage villa, toured ... read more

I am in Goa, was planning head to Mumbai tomorrow. Yesterday I rented a scooter, had a beautiful day, lunch of King Fish and veggies, mixed fruit smoothie, a swim in turtle beach, then a nice walk. I felt so much joy and at peace in my heart and mind. Continued on into a village passing beautiful very green farming areas, stopping to find an ice cream with a hard chocolate center that I keep seeing ad/pictures of, I had this as a kid. The people of Goa, so far are so very different from Kerala people. In Kerala everyone smiles and seems to be looking into the soul, there is a recognition that takes place that is so life affirming. In Goa, they offer maybe, a quarter smile, yet look with harder, sad, dark eyes, ... read more

After having a nice sleep in Marlborough and breakfast with fresh smoked salmon. Helena took me to Avebury where I got to see and walk the remnants of the stone circles. One was of the moon and the other was of the sun. The moon circle felt very gentle, I felt more internal, relaxed, in the flow of a liquid molasses like flow. The sun circle was like doing a few rounds of sun salutations, it felt upbeat. Both very restorative to my constitution. Some of the stones are like living breathing beings. Found shells in one of them, a heart in another, one a crescent moon shape. We stopped in a shop and spoke with the keeper about the history of the stones. Some of them were demolished into bits by putting the stone over ... read more

Spent a week in Varkala, cliffs, light and black sand beaches, dolphins, fishermen, Europeans, Nepalese, Tibetans, Indians, Aussie's, few Americans. Dreamt seveal nights about swimming with the dolphins. Had amazing fish and tiger prawns. Coffee is mostly instant here, yet managed to find a 1/2 decaf 1/2 reg americano w/soy...was found out as an American:) Being on the beach felt like an extension of my rejuvenation process from the panchkarma at the clinic I had come from, was so relaxing and awakening as well. Had a few marriage proposals...the Indian men are enammoured with foreign women, WOW! Met some of my greatest friends shopping, these children, pre-teen, work all day with thier families selling their goods, but how much can one carry on their back. I stayed in 2 places, the second was back a bit ... read more

After being at the ayurvedic clinic for 13 days I was so ready to see the beach, and shop. I went with a friend from the clinic. We had so much fun. The ride was about 40 minutes, the driver was so thrilled to point out temples to us along the way. There are temples everywhere here. Shiva, Lakshimi, Ganesh, Hanuman. Every morning about 5:15am I am serenaded by beautiful flute music coming through the fields behind my room. The music inspires a spark in me to start my day and off I go to practice yoga and pranayama with the other ladies up stairs. I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the beach, the feeling it gave me of tranquility and vitality. It was very clean. There were men doing like a tug of ... read more

Today four of us took a taxi and ventured off to a Lion Safari and an Elephant Rehabilitation Center. This was my first day away from the clinic since arriving in India Jan 5th. That alone was reason for much excitement for me. A very nice and attentive taxi driver picked us up at 9am and off we went through the little towns. On the streets were students walking, men and women carrying heavy loads on their heads, some cattle being walked, many rickshaws, motorcycles and merchants, as well as people peeking out of their homes. Us 4 very white women often get waved at, especially by children who say "Hi! What's your name? Where are you from?" men tend to make less eye contact. We drove by a Dam, not sure what body of water ... read more

Today is the purification day during my panchakarma process, day nine which couldn't be more perfect, as the number 9 symbolizes completion. I let go of all I could muster, am feeling a bit heady after all the purging physically and emotionally. This am I started my day with my yoga practice, massage then steam...my favorite. In the steam I felt overwhelmed with gratitude, wanting to share and dedicate my purification to all women, especially those I know, and love, whom have touched my life, their are so many, even now as I write this more women come to mind, their essence, strength, grace, vulnerability, fortitude, compassion, raw power, courage. To name a few, my Mom and many Mom's in my life, Grandma's and many Grandma's, my Sister and my many Sister's. I have been so ... read more

A lovely friend, whom has come to India several times asked me why I was coming to India, what my intention was. I told her it was...Love. She questioned me on the vastness of that and would I not like something less broad. I think love is enough, not that I will not possibly organically come up with inspirations that lead me into varying experiences. Love it is, as simple and grand as it is. First stop is Rasa Ayurvedic Clinic for Women. I am here for 14 days to strengthen my lungs, panchkarma (cleansing) and rejuvenation. I am in Beautiful Kerala at the southwestern tip near Trivinandrum. We are close to the ocean, which I will visit yet can't see from the clinic. There is a river here that the men bath in. A couple ... read more
