By Nicola We woke up to a beautiful morning in Split harbour. Louise was up early taking sunrise photos and the rest of us slowly followed suit. We all had a morning walk around the Split area before breakfast at 8 and then departure from the harbour around 9 - the start of our cruising! We spent the morning reading on the various decks around the boat, taking in some sun. We were warned that Hvar port can be extremely busy and that we may only be able to dock in the early evening. There was an option to take a taxi from the big boat earlier which we declined. While we waited to be allowed to go into port we anchored near a lovely bay. We were allowed to swim here and the passengers were ... read more

By Riana The morning started with early alarms in our arty Zagreb apartment, packed bags and a tram to the bus station. The bus took us from Zagreb to the more relaxed Split. It was interesting to see the landscapes change from luscious green mountainous areas to darker green areas reminiscent of Cape Fynbos or areas in the Klein Karoo back home. Closer to Split, white rock formations became a more regular sight. The bus dropped us off right on Split's harbour where you could see hundreds of different boats of different shapes and sizes. Across the harbour, the white walls and orange roofs of Diocletian's palace became visible. Split's history started in around 295 AD when the Roman Emperor, Diocletian, built his retirement palace in Split to 'escape the cares of the empire, cure his ... read more

By Christi We had a really early start this morning. Had to get our still damp washing packed, and head to the train station for our 6h20 departure back to Zagreb. This train was a bit different from the one we came with. Less carriages, compartments with sleeping people stretched out over whole rows, and faster too. Again our pasports were a point of discussion for the border police, but in the end it was a short stop and by 8h35 we were back in Zagreb. We found my mom and Riana sitting on the exact same park bench that we sat at 5 days ago, eating the same 12 kuna strawberries. They had managed to get some sleep on the plane and were ready to explore the city - after a shower, of course. Luckily ... read more

By Christi Slovenians don't seem to be too fussed with breakfast, not in the bacon and eggs sense anyway, and few restaurants have breakfast menus. After nearly a week of yoghurt and pastries for breakfast, we felt like a change, and spotted a good breakfast cafe last night already. After this good start to the day, we headed to Metelkova. Metelkova is an arty neighbourhood near the train station. The walls are covered in intricate grafitti, wall art and strange sculptures. I'm sure the vibes are much different at night: imagine dimmed lights, lots of people and smoke and who knows what else. But it was nearly deserted when we were there - except for a skateboarder who tried to scare an old lady and got shouted at by another woman passing by! At 11am we ... read more

By Nicola After a bit of a let down day in Bohinj yesterday we decided to shuffle our plans and try it again! The weather reports indicated that it should be a better day, but we weren't sure if we could trust them anymore! But we decided to take a chance anyway! We were due to leave Bled that day so we did an early check out and left our bags at the hostel. Then made our way down the hill to catch our 7.20am bus, coffee cups in hand. From about 200m away we spotted a few buses arrive. One left very quickly before we could check where it was headed, the others were not for us. After a few minutes of checking every bus that arrived, we realised that we must have missed our ... read more

By Nicola After a hot day of walking near Vintgar Gorge we had plans for wearing shorts for our following hike! Wake up on Tuesday, recheck the weather- scrap the shorts idea! Warmer clothes required! The weather predicted a cold day in Bohinj, our destination for the day, but luckily only 0.1- 0.2mm of rain per hour! We packed our rain jackets, picked up some coffee and pastries to go and climbed onto the bus to Bohinj. We arrived to beautifully green surroundings with a lovely river flowing out of the lake under an arched stone bridge- what a lovely picture! On advice from the tourist info office, we started off around the lake and crossed a meadow to get to the start of the Mostnica Gorge hike. By this time it was raining and we ... read more

By Christi This morning we ducked out of the hostel early and got on the bus to Lake Bled. The drive took just more than an hour, and we arrived at our new hostel before 10. The friendly, American sounding guy at reception gave us some tips on how to get to the walking trails we had in mind, and then we went looking for coffee. You have to order "coffee with milk" to get the normal type of coffee we are used to - just in smaller cups. There are other options like "white coffee" (which is not the same as "latte"), cappuccino and macchiato, but we have decided that coffee with milk is the best choice. Lake Bled is from glacial origin, about 2.1km long and 1.3 km wide, with a 6km walking trail ... read more

By Christi The Slovenia / Croatia holiday is finally here! Nicola and I left from OR Tambo yesterday at 14h, and had a very empty Qatar flight. We could move around and each have our own row, so we could even lie flat for a bit. We had a 2-hour layover in Doha in the midnight hours and then continued on to Zagreb, where we arrived shortly after 6am this morning. Not much sleep to go on, just the adrenalin of day 1 of a holiday! Big surprise in the bathroom where I found my classmate Louisa brushing her teeth.. they are also on holiday to Slovenia. Small world. We navigated the public transport to get from the airport to the bus station and from there to the train station, which we reached by 8am. We ... read more
