Saturday 22nd August Birkenau then Auschwitz We are lost for words today to describe how we are going to spend our day.’Visiting’ or’ sightseeing’ the death camps at two of the most notorious places that WW2 created is definitely not appropriate. The weather has changed overnight as expected and a cool front has passed through but it hasn’t yet brought the promised rain and we hope that it holds off for the day as we shall be out in the open. We shall hold off leaving our hotel until later in the morning as the crowds at Auschwitz reportedly are greatest between 9am and 3pm when bus loads of people that travel from all over converge for their guided ‘tours’ of mainly Auschwitz which is now termed a’museum’.In fact as an individual you have to join ... read more

Friday 21st August East through Poland Another stunning day and the heat wave continues. Breakfast was included in the tariff so we enjoyed a hearty meal which included scrambled eggs and Polish sausage. There was even a toaster although the bread wasn’t exactly cut for toasting!!But needs must and it has been a few days since we were able to make toast and spread on some jam!! The stay here has been short but very enjoyable and comfortable and we would look this town up again if we ever make it back to Poland. The goal today is Wadowice a town virtually east of where we stayed and the idea is to take a route that first heads east and then dives south a little before finally north to our destination. This way we would miss the combined ... read more

Thursday August 20th Another day, another border............Poland The heat wave continues and it is predicted to be over 30C today so we are pleased that the drive today as we head further east shouldn’t take too long. Our destination is just across the border in Poland although we do have to drive across a fair amount of the Chzech Republic to get there.Google Maps have given us several options avoiding toll roads of course and we have selected the shortest in both distance and time not really knowing what there might be to see on the way. First call though is at Kaufland supermarket.I had threatened to remove all the luggage from RR and load her up with beer .At the prices for beer in this country it is a wonder that we haven’t seen more drunks.Perhaps making ... read more

Wednesday 19th August A walking tour of old Prague It’s another fine clear morning and the temperature is predicted to hit 30c + again in this heat wave that Europe is experiencing. We are not finding it difficult to get around as there is not the same level of humidity that comes with heat at home. While the sky overhead is clear and immediately above it is blue when you look into the distance there is a yellow tinged haze which we accept is probably the pollution that travels around this part of the world from the large factories and manufacturing plants that dot the landscape. Our plan today is to take in the sights that we didn’t see on Monday and revisit part of the castle as we didn’t have a walk through the gardens. That will also ... read more

Tuesday 18th August Some local sightseeing in Beroun After a full day yesterday in Prague we have decided today to stay in Beroun and do some local sightseeing as well as catching up on some washing, banking etc and head back to Prague tomorrow for a walking tour of the sights we still want to see. After a lazy breakfast and sorting out some paperwork we took a walk up the hill behind the town to see three bears that used to feature in a childrens TV series made in the republic that are now housed in an enclosure as they can’t be returned to the wild. It was a short and steep climb but we were rewarded when we got there as one of the bears was outside although he wasn’t active and we had to ... read more

Monday 17th August A day at Prague Castle It was a very comfortable night in our bargain accommodation in Beroun. The only adverse feature was a car alarm that went off a couple of times in the night. And given that we had read that car theft is a problem for tourists in the Czech Republic we wondered whether we should go down and check that RR was still there. The receptionist assured us that they had not lost a car from behind the barrier to the road,so we went back to sleep, once the alarm was turned off. Breakfast was described as a “Swedish table” but it actually turned out to be a bit more than that. Not quite the full English but there were eggs and sausages and we ate well to prepare us for a day of sightseeing ... read more

Sunday 16th August Into the land of the Skoda We have been wracking our brains as to the year we owned a Skoda car.It was our first car after we were married and when it was time to trade up we sold it foir the same amount that we brought itr for!!We did have to replace an axle,a front windscreen and put in a reconditioned motor though in the couple of years we owned it.Leigh might remember trips in the grey Skoda with the engine in the rear but Erin would have been just a baby so it must have been the early eighties. The Skoda was ranked just above the Lada but it was definitely more comfortable to travel in than the Lada!!(just) Today we are heading for the country that New Zealand used to trade ... read more

Saturday 15th August Into southern Germany It has been a very good three days/four nights in Berlin see the sights and not having to drive ourselves around with the problems of city traffic and finding a car park. The day has dawned beautifully fine and with small amount of breeze coming from the south the temperature should be warm.A problem in not understanding German is that you tend to avoid the TV channels that have the weather forecasts in detail and so you can’t be sure what the weather is actually going to be. Another trip to the Kaufland supermarket is on the cards again before breakfast to buy fresh milk and OJ.And with a day on the road we thought we may as well indulge ourselves at the bakery outside the supermarket for some lunch. This ... read more

Our usual routine of an early morning visit to Kaufland supermarket to get our breakfast needs gets our day underway again. And today is our last day of sightseeing in Berlin. The weather today is brilliantly fine and ithe temperature is expected to be in the upper 20's so we shall go prepared and dress accordingly. We plan to walk between the sights we haven't seen so far over the past two days and we will start with the Documentation Centre. Our 48 hr pass isn't quite finished yet and as we are ready to catch an earlier train than the past two days we will still be able to use it for the trip into the city. We needed to change trains once to get to the Documentation Centre. It is here where a lot of the history ... read more

The location of our room at the AirportHotel(which is actually 10km from the airport)on the 4th floor would you think be high enough not to hear the small sounds that go on at street level. Not so for us!!Because it was so warm last night we left the large window open as despite the hotel being new and having air conditioning it was still stuffy. It was only when we went to cross the road to the monster supermarket that we figured out what had been an incessant background noise in the night. With no one arounf using the pedestrian crossing in the night the clicking sound that tells you to wait to cross just kept on clicking!! We don't have a fridge in the room so it is necessary to buy milk each day for our breakfast cereals ... read more
