AMRITSAR Population: 1.1 million PUNJAB Population: 27.7 million Area: 50,000 sq km Our goal in getting out of Delhi as quickly as possible was to find a smaller, less chaotic place in which to calm down and find our bearing as we adjusted to the life of a foreign traveller in India. Upon arriving in Amritsar, we soon realized that we'd jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire. With a population of merely 1 million people, Amritsar has 1/16th the population of Delhi. Nevertheless, it is every bit as crowded, congested and hectic to travel in as Delhi, with comparable air pollution - it's just tinier in size. Coming off the bus, we were immediately set on upon by a group of men crying, "Rickshaw! Rickshaw! Taxi! Taxi! Golden Temple! Golden Temple!" Even ... read more

After the epic failure of our first few hours in Delhi, the two of us spent most of the afternoon and evening holed up in our hotel room, watching Indian TV, playing cards, practicing our Hindi numbers, and trying to stay awake to overcome our jet lag. Before we left our hotel room, we loaded up both our backpacks with everything we were afraid to part with if our hotel got broken into - most of our belongings. We got a recommendation of where to go from the front desk at the hotel. He even drew us a map. We walked down the street and found it without too much trouble. It clearly catered to tourists, and was on the pricey side. But the ... read more

After over 24 hours of travel from JFK Airport in NYC to Ghandi International Airport in New Delhi, with a 4 hour layover in Vienna, we arrived in India. The first thing I noticed stepping off the airplane into the airport terminal was the smell - it smelled a bit like a campfire that's primary fuel was trash. The smell lingered through the entire airport. When we walked outside, we saw why.The campfire smell here was much stronger, and everything I looked at was through a thin haze of smoke/smog. At this point we were walking with ... read more

The #1 question I've been asked by friends and family when I tell them I'm traveling to India for 6 months: Why India? It's always been a question that kind of stumped me. Why India? I usually stumble and mutter a reply that fails to convince myself, let alone whoever I'm talking to, that I really want to go to India at all. Failing to think of anything that's drawing me to India itself, I resort to an old SAT tactic: process of elimination. "Oh, India is one of the few regions of the world we haven't been to. We've both been to Europe a bunch, lived in New Zealand and visited Australia. Meg's been to China and I've lived in Africa. So the next place for us to visit is either India or South America. ... read more
