Spectacular weather today and what better way to enjoy it than returning to the infamous Florida Mall...what a difference...all that was missing was a haunting wind stirring up the sand and pushing tumbleweed gently across the street. Not quite but compared to other occasions this was just like walking around a mall at home...painful still but no crowds. Finding a car park was so easy we actually tried out several to see which suited the Chrysler best. Plan had been to head up Mt Dora, some quaint little town an hour or so north (had directions down pat for this venture), but this plan was torn asunder when littlest tourist got up at 9am and then we noticed her absent at 9.30am only to find she had gone back to bed and despite plenty of noise ... read more

As per the normal commencement...weather was good today, warm, some scattered cloud, no wind and no rain. After late night last night junior troops were slow to rise and even slower to stir into action...but not a problem as both completely happy and a pleasure to have around - even though both a little tired. Plan was to go to some other outlet mall that had been recommended to Sandy and then have dinner around Universal Studios and then spend late afternoon and early evening in the park for our final day on those passes. Had a quick glance at the map and headed off with route sorted and off ramps identified. Twenty minutes later we approached the outlet mall and watched it magnify in the windscreen in accord with the levels of excitement displayed by ... read more

This Florida weather has irregular mood swings! Today the weather was warm and pleasant and we were able to go out and about without the number of layers that have become necessary over the last few days. Today as reward for her tolerance and fantastic efforts yesterday in organising the Manatee Trek and for navigating us there semi successfully, we decided to start the day off with shopping at the Beuna Vista Outlet Mall... On arrival men went one way, women went the other and we met up a couple of hours later. At this time the men were carrying '0' shopping bags where the women were carrying three...reason for this anomaly was that I had the car keys and we had already sequestered our purchases therein. Reuben is something of a disappointment...he is a good ... read more

Started out as another chilly one but then the sun gained some strength and became a brilliant day. Standard blue cloudless skies but just a lot warmer...not tropical but very pleasant. For what we ended up doing - the weather was perfect!! Reubs has got a bit of a cold so has been hacking like a 40 a day man for the last two days...been told to harden up and he has...he's a good lad. So late morning, as we waited to see whether to don the arctic wardrobe or just one for winter in Otago, packed a lunch (cos we're cheap!) and then headed off for the Blue Springs National Park. Nope, never heard of it either but from one of Sandy's gazillion (that is actually a word she uses) guide books and bookmarked web ... read more

Very, very cold is the only way to describe it. There was no wind today and the skies were clear and bright blue....but regardless of the picture postcard appearance, it was bitterly cold. The photos will give testament to that. Today around midday we got to Disney's Animal Kingdom...this was the one that Sandy was dreading taking me to as she expected complaints and comparisons to Africa. Well, was she surprised - and to be honest so was I. Where Epcot attempted to emulate the real thing and failed, the safari drive here in the Animal Kingdom was really pretty good. Yes, its completely artificial and there were antelope mixing that never could geographically in Africa, but it was a damn good copy and very well done. Fantastic enclosures...huge multi acre blocks, and while captivity is ... read more

When visiting a foreign domain it is important to partake in some of the local customs so as to learn more about our international neighbours and gain a greater appreciation of their way of life...so today we embraced a time honoured annual tradition started by this very nation and now copied to a lesser degree by even we in the antipodes...the great Boxing Day Sale!!! And if you are going to enter into such an event, and only have one opportunity to do so, then of course you must select the venue or location that will best expose this national custom...our old friend the Florida Mall!! We have been twice now, the Saturday before Christmas and now Boxing Day...going on an ordinary trading day will be a terrible anti climax. We did not head there for ... read more

As far as Christmas goes this was different...kids woke up around 8am and into the gifts around the fibre optic glow in the dark authentic Christmas tree...only thing missing is the odour of pine sap and sprinkle of pine needles! Despite it being very low key on the gift front the kids were more than happy. Had decided on a Christmas brunch of waffles and pancakes with fresh berries, bacon, chorizo (sort of) sausage and the likes. Now at home this is a regular weekend event with everything made from scratch. Not really set up for that here as kitchen not brilliant on utensils and no raw ingredients (all sold in bulk and really don't see us getting through 5 lbs of flour in 10 days) so did the 'when in Rome' thing and bought 'pre ... read more

There is no punchline in the title...that is the name of the hotel / small city / convention centre we went to this afternoon to view an ice carving display! The Gaylord Palms it is called... The display of seasonal ice sculptures is cleverly titled 'Ice'! This normally would have completely different connotations if at work but here it relates solely to an impressive ice sculpting display. In short it goes through the night before Christmas story with each page or so depicted in a different scene appropriate to that portion of the story. Very cleverly done and the kids really thought it was pretty cool...at minus 9, that it is something of an understatement! They issue you with polar jackets as you enter and you need them. One of the scenes has a set of ... read more

North America December 23rd 2010

Ambled casually into EPCOT, one of the four Disneyworld Parks, this morning around 11. It was 'busy' but that was to be expected given this is their busiest week in the year, but having said that whilst it became apparent some things were going to be out of the question, there was still plenty to do and see. First stop was the Under the Seas with Nemo ride attraction, as again focus was getting into something for Caitlin first up. This showed a 10 minute wait but was closer to 30 but all the same no real big deal. Ride itself was a very child friendly trip through the ocean depths in a chain of clam shells whilst Nemo and the rest of the cast accompanied doing humourous bits and pieces. Very cleverly done, particularly the ... read more

This is a vacation...so today we did nothing. Casual day reading, hour or so in the pool and then just for something completely different...Walmart!!! Admittedly it was for groceries in the main, but even so...new part of the experience was that we went to a different Walmart...cos they don't all look the same! Concerned that we are actually getting directions to 'other' Walmarts from 'helpful' connoisseiurs of the Walmart brand corresponding with us. The management here has clearly heard from the outlet malls that we're high rollers and as a result they are trying to sell me time shares everywhere from Cancun to the South Carolinas. They started out with offering me $75 off admission tickets to Disneyworld to attend a 90 minute presentation, only proviso being that Sandy is in attendance also. (they have worked ... read more
