As the trip winds down I'll probably only get another two entries into this journal. I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel here and rather than spend time writing down each and every last detail, I'd rather just cruise into the end of the trip and enjoy the rest of the short time left. Anyway moving forward... For the second half of the Cairns trip we decided to follow the original plan and head north to the Port Douglas/Daintree Rainforest area. There was plenty of hesitation to proceed with that plan at first considering how badass the Mission Beach/reef leg of the trip turned out to be. However we wanted to try and get the full Cairns area experience so switching locations "won the day" in the end. We slept in ... read more

Ahhh tropical paradise! Originally when we planned Cairns as the longest leg of the trip outside of Melbourne I had some reservations. Specifically I wasn't sure if it would be too hot/muggy this time of the year or if it would rain the entire time, or it would end up being a complete tropical tourist trap up here. I'm happy to report that all doubts have been rendered moot and I'm quite happy that we chose to hit this area instead of the original plan (Brisbane/Gold Coast). The original itinerary for Cairns was to travel north to the towns of Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation. However the rental car rep told us about this place to the south called Mission Beach. We've been trying to do shit on the fly as much as possible so instead ... read more

It's been a few days since I last published an update, mostly because we've been traveling around quite a bit and it's been difficult to find time to concentrate on writing. It's good timing that I'm able to post an update tonight...I'll be able to capture the entire Tasmania leg in one big post! Last time I posted we were getting ready to fly over to Tassie. We braved the Melbourne public transit system with flying colors on Wednesday morning and made it to the airport with time to spare. Our flight was super early -- we had to be at the airport by 7am. Needless to say both Ali and I were mightly tuckered out and it was quite a chore dragging our collective asses through the public trans. I give us both "Two Fosters ... read more

Today was the first day that this holiday really took off. Nothing against the first couple of days here of course, it's just that I'm not really sure any place I've visited can hold a candle to the sheer beauty and magnitude of the Great Ocean Road and 12 Apostles National Park. Ali and I got off to a somewhat late start today -- which I guess shouldn't surprise anyone at this stage given present company. We had a noon call time to pick up the rental car that Ali's lovely flat-mate, Julie Z, had booked for us using her travel agency contacts. Luckily we were able to make up some time along the way because we ended up needing every last minute of exploration time on our afternoon adventure. Started off down the highway in ... read more

North America February 12th 2012

Woke up around 8am today feeling much better despite a night of on/off jetlagged sleep. After a quick breakfast Ali, his roommates Julie and Nui and I made our way over to the St. Kilda music/arts festival via Melbourne's excellent public rail transit system. Ali and his Kiwi roommate Nui stayed up until around 3am the night before over rounds of whisky and dominoes while I hit the sack early to get some sleep. Needless to say I was the only one alive and alert despite my jetlagged condition. Nui in particular looked like about 3 different shades of green and barely makes it off the streetcar without yacking. Walking through the crowd at the festival once again reminded me how similar yet different the people are compared to American folk. Just an overall more causal ... read more

Ahhh after 22+ hours of flying and waiting in airports I'm finally here. First 15 hour flight went smoother than expected; I actually over-packed in hindsight. Spent the majority of the flight reading, playing puzzles, sleeping and listening to some comedy on the iPhone. Went pretty quick and painless all things considered. Upon arrival we got settled at Ali's pad where I will be spending the next few nights before we head off to Tasmania. Ali's place is pretty chill - he's got super nice roommates (flat mates) and his apartment is located in a bustling part of town. After spending a few minutes getting settled and changing out of my foul-smelling airline clothes we ventured out for some food and sights. I was warned previously that food and drink here is super expensive -- and ... read more
