Saturday, May 22nd: Wow…we have been in Europe a week so far!!! It feels like we have been here for a lot longer…I guess when you keep busy, time just slows way down! I hate to say it again…after Skyping with Eric last night, we found out that the weather at home has not been much to talk about. We have been blessed with about 75-80 degree weather, and today is no exception! I have gotten really brown due to the Mediterranean sun…it’s kind of like going to Hawaii…the sun is a lot different! Love it!!! Anyway, we completely enjoyed driving through the countryside, yesterday, that we decided that we’d do it again today!!! We got into the car…by the way, my mom and dad rented a Skoda station wagon/SUV…I had never heard of a Skoda, ... read more

Friday, May 21st: found my mom abandoned, standing by herself on the side of the roadThis was going to be a very exciting day for my dad…a dream come true!!! We woke up to another glorious and sunny morning, and went down to the neighborhood coffee bar for our regular sustenance. We had to catch the train into Florence to meet our Vespa tour guides!!! We were advised to meet at 9:30 in front of the McDonalds, which was in front of the Santa Maria Novella train station. Since we arrived early, we took advantage of using their bathroom, and got another espresso from the annex called McCafe…a very fancy café that served yummy coffee drinks and gourmet pastries…I know what you are thinking…gourmet and McDonalds? Well in Europe, it’s true! The seating looks like you ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pisa May 20th 2010

We woke up to another beautiful and sunny day. Love this climate! We walked down to our local favorite espresso bar and had pastries and espresso, which Kenya tried for the first time…I hope that didn’t start a bad habit! She loved it of course! Especially the way Italians drink it…with lots of sugar! My mom and dad were watching this lady at the counter, and she loaded five scoops of sugar into that tiny little espresso cup, and gulped it right down!! We were amazed!!! Kenya and I had planned to go to the leaning tower of Pisa that day, so we invited my mom and dad to go with us. We bought tickets at the local train station, and the ride was only an hour and a half away. We were train experts by ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence May 19th 2010

Wednesday, May 19th: Clouds were rolling in this morning, so we wondered if it would rain at all, since yesterday was so nice! And…my voice stared to return! Yay!! We ate our breakfast, (yes…Nutella again…yum…) and then walked down to the tower kitchen for our second day of cooking class. Today was the more expensive and more in-depth class, so I had just signed myself up for it. I had arranged for Kenya to observe the class, read, and play her DS player during the class (I bought her two new games and surprised her with them that morning). So we walked in the front door and met the other chef that teaches classes. His name was Alberto, and he was blond and approx. 30 years old. He preferred Abba and Queen over opera, so we ... read more

Tuesday, May 18: Today, we woke up to a gorgeous sunny day. We ate our wonderful European breakfast (lol) of toast and Nutella! We also took a walk down to the coffee bar for my espresso…I am not sure I will ever drink coffee the same way back home!! By 9:45, we were really excited to walk down to the medieval tower across the street from our estate. We knocked on the huge door, and viola, there stood our chef for the day, Maurizio. Maurizio was about 45 years old, and he looked very ‘Italian’…you know, dark skin, dark curly hair, a fabulous Italian nose, and a warm, inviting personality. He had opera playing in the background and he offered us another espresso and Kenya some nice cold milk, fresh from the cow, probably the night ... read more

Monday morning: Uh oh…you know how I mentioned that I was sick? Well my throat had gotten worse, it seemed, overnight, plus my right eye was welded shut!! When I finally took a shower and pried my eye open, it was super red! I thought I might have pink eye! (Never had it before). Well I had read somewhere that if you go to the hospital in Italy, they would treat you for free, even if you are from another country. So, it was about 7:00 in the morning, and after hemming and hawing for about 20 minutes, and knowing we had to check out by 11:00, I decided we needed to take a taxi to the nearest E.R. What an adventure! So, we arrived at this huge, huge facility, and went right in to the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome May 16th 2010

Sunday: Today we got up bright and early because Kenya was super excited to go see the Colosseum! We took the Metro subway to the Colosseo stop, took the stairs up, and right as we came out of the entrance, the Colosseum and Constantine’s Arch was right there in front of us, in ALL its glory!!! Seriously, this was the purpose of our whole idea of going to Rome…Our mouths hung open for like a minute!!! Since it was so early in the morning, we decided that we would just go over to the Pantheon so I could have my much coveted cup of espresso from Sant’ Eustachio Bar…well, we walked about a half mile, when I discovered that we were going the wrong way…again. So we stopped at a gelato stand and had a pastry ... read more

Saturday morning: Today was our day to go to the Vatican Museum!! We ate breakfast at the little cafe downstairs…I had oatmeal with apples, and Kenya had some homemade bread with Nutella. It was sooo good! Then we went over to the train station to catch the subway to the Vatican City. We successfully bought our tickets at the Biglieterri, and promptly ran to catch the subway…in the wrong direction! so we got off on the next stop, and had to all the way back up and run back down to catch that one going the right way! We rode all the way to the stop called “Ottaviano”. When we got out, luckily we just had to follow the rest of the crowd over to the city wall. We were quite a bit early, so ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome May 14th 2010

So we took off for Rome at 1:00 and got there at 3:15 (p.m.). It was the weirdest thing flying in there…the whole time we were coming down, I kept wondering where the airport was…it looked like we were going to fly right into a field! But at the last second the landing strip appeared…and I do mean second! Then we taxied, like at least 60 miles an hour, around curves, past barns and a rock quarry to finally arrive. The Leonardo Di Vinci airport is huge! We walked, and walked, then walked a bit more to finally reach customs…I am not sure what we did wrong, but we never found customs, and found ourselves outside! We looked around and no one seemed to care, so we headed for the train station looking furtively behind us ... read more

7:00 a.m. So, the day has arrived!!! I still feel like it is not here yet!! I guess I may start getting excited at the airport? I know Kenya has had a permanent grin on her face since she has gotten up…lol… I am without voice this morning too…I guess Eric is blessed with another day of quiet!!! Going through everything at the airport will be sooo much fun if I can’t talk!! 10:30 a.m. The drop off…I have been kind of dreading this for a few days…how will Eric react to us really leaving and being gone for a whole month? I felt a little melancholy on the way to the airport…sure enough, as soon as we said our goodbye’s he started crying and could barely get out of the parking lane…even under the ... read more
