Aaahhh…it was so nice to wake up and not have anywhere to rush to today! I leisurely got up, went out to the kitchen got my 1st cup of coffee, and went back to bed to read for a little bit. The smell of the coffee eventually woke Kenya up, so started the day!! After taking a shower, we took Falco for a long walk and ate breakfast…you guessed right…fresh rolls!!!! Our plan for the day, was to just explore Bitburg and get reacquainted with it. I had not been there for 25 years, and there were a few things that were familiar to me…the brewery of course!! But the town had expanded its’ brewing operations, so there were several new buildings and a new factory that you could see for miles! We walked into town, ... read more

Monday, May 31st: I do remember what I had to eat last night! I had Leberknödel Suppe (liver dumpling soup) with ribbons of french crepes in it...and a salad. I sort of read the menu wrong, and I thought that I was going to get a soup and salad, then a crepe with Nutella on it for dessert. When I finished my soup and salad, I waited and waited for my crepe with Nutella! When I complained to my mom that the waitress was taking so long, she informed me that I had already eaten the crepe...it was what was in the soup! LOL!!! Oh well...that’s what I get for trying to show off and pretend I am fluent in reading German! So, waking up this morning was awesome! Kenya and I were so cozy in ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Sankt Gallen May 30th 2010

Sunday, May 30th: Sadly, it was time to leave my Bavarian family, and head up north to where my other uncle lives. Normally the drive would take about 5 ½ hours, but we wanted to stretch it out to two days, and drive through and explore the Black Forest (Schwartzenwald), Switzerland, France and Luxembourg. We left late, about 9:00 I think, and it took us about 2 hours to reach our first destination: Lindau, a town on the Bodensee, or Lake Constance. We actually got up to 160 km an hour on the autobahn! That is 100 miles per hour! Whoopee!!!  Lindau is located very close to the meeting point of the Austrian, German and Swiss borders. The old town is on a tiny 1 square mile island that is connected to the mainland by ... read more

Saturday, May 29th: This morning we walked around the town we were staying in, Marquartstein. Marquartstein is almost completely surrounded by the Bavarian Alps. Everywhere we looked…there they were, in all of their glory! We took most of the morning walking around and taking pictures of the beautiful painted buildings, the river that runs right through the village, even a picture of this two story home that had a ladder running up the side for their cat(s)! The top story window had a cat door in it! I thought that was the coolest thing! We did our daily grocery run, and I could not wait for lunch!!! My aunt was making my absolute favorite! Frickadelln!!! A Frickadel is like a meatball…it has ground hamburger and pork in it, and special spices, and then it is fried ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich May 28th 2010

Friday, May 28th: Woke up pretty excited today! We are taking the train into Munich (MÜnchen)!! My mom and I, well we are kind of sticklers on time…always needing to be a half hour early, everywhere we go!!! Seriously! So, we knew what time the train was supposed to leave, so we had planned out exactly what time we needed to leave, how much time to leave for “just-in-case” incidents, etc. Well that is not the way my uncle and cousin (Cathy) work. They said we could leave at such and such time, which left only a half hour to get there…and the ride was about 20 minutes away! So needless to say, my mom and I were fretting the whole way over…no freeway for us…it was all back roads!!! Well we ended up getting ... read more

Thursday, May 27th: Good morning!! Well I got a treat this morning…instead of having to go and find the ‘magic button’, my cousin, Maxi, who is an aspiring chef, brought me a cappuccino that had a smiling face “painted” on it!! What a nice surprise and treat!! He showed me how to do it, and I would have NEVER figured that one out on my own!!  Our daily breakfasts consisted of rolls and bread, picked up fresh from the bakery just that morning…omgeee…heaven!! We had platters of cheese and cold cuts to choose from, and about 5 different homemade jellies and marmalade, and of course, Nutella!! Some mornings we had soft boiled eggs too. I can’t believe the amount of bread we ate daily!!  Anyway, we woke up to the clouds covering the Alps, ... read more

Wednesday, May 26th: Today, we were introduced to…A Magic button!!!!!!!!!!! Three magic buttons, if you want to get technical about it. My aunt and uncle have an espresso machine that is AWESOME!!! If you want a large cup of coffee, like a mug, you push one button, if you wanted a smaller cup, you hit another button, and if you just wanted a tiny cup of pure espresso, you simply hit the third button…I now know what people on crack must feel like! Every opportunity we could get…touch the magic button, and viola! A yummy cup of coffee!!! I could definitely get used to this!!! Even Kenya got in on it, but we limited her to just one tiny cup of espresso, and even then, just in the morning . Of course, when we had the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Lake Garda May 25th 2010

Tuesday, May 25th: Well…despite my dads’ thoughts that we could NOT all be happy in one room, we actually did just fine! After all, we had walked all day the previous day, and had woken up super early too, so that we just were plumb exhausted! My mom and dad are natural early risers, so they got their showers in first, and went down to the hotel café to get their coffee, while I took my shower. The shower was very modern…all glassed in, but it had a hand held showerhead…I hate those things!! It seems they never point in the right direction, and sure enough, this one didn’t either, and I ended up soaking the floor somehow…ugh…oh well! So Kenya and I went down to join my parents in the café. The breakfast was buffet, ... read more

Monday, May 24th: Yawn!!! We woke up at 5:15 this morning, because we wanted to get an early start, and avoid rush hour traffic! We were out the door by 6:15…ready and rarin’ to go! We knew it would take us about three hours to get there going all freeway (autostrada). In Italy, you have to pay a toll on only the freeways, so when you enter the freeway, you have to stop and take a ticket. When you exit the freeway, you have to pass through another booth, put your ticket in, and it calculates how far you have gone, and charges the toll according to that. One time, while we were paying the toll, my dad dropped some coins on the ground and he got a little flustered, and for some reason the gate ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence May 23rd 2010

Sunday, May 23rd: Today is our last full day in Tuscany. Wow…we have enjoyed “staying put” in one spot!!! We have made new friends, worldwide, and made some town people very happy for our business! We strolled into our favorite coffee bar and we decided to have our coffee out of the sidewalk, where we could enjoy a view of the bicyclists that were racing through town. The specialty grocers, next door to the coffee bar, brought out their colorful banners, and were selling porchetta (think of a whole pig, gutted, salted heavily, sewn together, and then deep fried), special cheeses, breads, olives, and an assortment of other delights…the shop owner was Sicilian, and was VERY boisterous!!! He had us laughing, sampling his specialties, and he even gave us a bottle of Sicilian wine for being ... read more
