memories of flagstaff
I guess your photos are just a taster of what you must have taken over your journey. Looking forward to seeing more further down the track. Phil and I visited Flagstaff in 2001 so some familiar places mentioned in your blog, Wupatki pueblo ruins and Sunset crater. The other significant thing that happened there was that the door knob fell off our motel bathroom and Phil got stuck in there for a little while. You may remember the Venice beach toilet incident when he got locked in and tried to pull the lock apart with his Swiss Army knife. The Flagstaff incident was less dramatic but had him worried for a few minutes. I think just about everything we touched in that motel room broke or fell apart! It was also the place where we learned that you don't stay near railway lines as the trains during that night seemed to take forever to go by! Hopefully your motel was a bit more upmarket...

view looks worth it
Forget the food etc, the view looks worth it. I guess they don't have to try as hard to get diners as some places. Must be some great hiking trails in that area. I wouldn't have known how to pronounce the town name except for the Partridge Family singing 'Point me in the direction of Albuquerque..." all those years ago. I learnt a bit about US geography from their touring around on that show!

Neons everywhere
Love the photos of the Neon signs. It must have been a huge business in the US at some stage. There was an item on American Pickers about how they are made and it is a lot of work to make them with more than a couple of colours. We also saw a travel item on Vegas that showed a place where you can see a huge number of old unused signage which would be interesting to see, like a big Neon graveyard. The midpoint cafe looks very retro. Must look up a recipe for nekkid chicken! What is the most revolting thing you have seen on a menu during your travels? I am sure you must have seen some beauties. I remember seeing a sign outside a takeaway place in Florida for fried gizzards but sadly the place was closed so we couldn't have a tasting??? Ha ha! Reminds me of the Beverley Hillbillies and Granny's gourmet cooking. love Janet

What the!!
We are finding your blogs really descriptive, hope you are enjoying your travels and not having too many hassels. You have to stop eating out at the steak houses or you will have excess baggage. Good luck for the rest of your trip.

sights and characters
You are certainly finding plenty of interesting views and characters along your journey. Keep up the great work with the blog and photos, taking us along on your pilgrimage. One of our favourite shows "American Pickers" features some great characters who collect all manner of historical items, much like the type of people you seem to be meeting along the way. They all have a story to tell! Janet

alternate view
Hi Love the mural photos. Did you know that there is a Billy Connolly show about Route 66? There is some promo advertising on here but it hasn't started yet. You can probably download it if you are curious to hear what he has to say?? Loving the blog! Janet xxx

St Louis baseball fireworks
Can you believe another friend of ours photographed those fireworks too? From his hotel window as he had a lovely view of the ballpark, although he went to the game earlier. He's over there from Brisbane on a work trip.

lucky guess?
Let me guess, who had the pint and who had the hot chocolate?? Duh! One thing you can rely on is buckets of rain when you go for a hike in Yorkshire. What a joy, so glad you packed your wet weather gear. Phil and I visited Hardraw Force and Aysgarth Falls back in 1992 with Kathleen and Michael, back when my uncle was still alive. Just seeing your photos brings back those happy memories of the time we spent with them on that visit. Seems we were lucky to go there with locals as I don't recall any dramas getting there. They were such brilliant tour guides and we enjoyed all our long Yorkshire hikes with them. Kathleen continues to be the person who we turn to for any UK tourist advice to this day. Bernie, we loved your waterfall photos and the Birds of Prey pics were brilliant too. Your cameras pick up the fine detail in their feathers beautifully. Sorry to hear about the car dramas back home. Hopefully the cause has now been diagnosed and there won't be any further problems once repaired.

LIKE.
Hey Tracey, pls just enjoy your holiday and forget about your blog ~ at least the incredible details you are taking such pains to share with your friends. I really admire your energy to constantly update your blog. I'm afraid I barely have time to write in my diary let alone share my daily adventures like you do. Sorry the weather turned bad for you. If it's any consolation the weather here in Melbourne is just as bad. But we have an excuse - it's officially Winter now!! Cheers, Caroline

I enjoy blogging
Hi Caroline, Please rest assured that the detail in my blogs is for us and our friends are just lucky to be able to share the record that we are keeping for ourselves (if they choose). We find that even with a photographic record memories fade so quickly and it it great to be able to go back to the travel diary to review what were were doing and how we were feeling!! Cheers Tracey.

You Happy Snappers!
Sounds like you're really into getting just that "right" shot. I too am carrying my new Nikon V1 with me everywhere, practicing with light, subjects etc. I'm really want to take superb photos on my September trip to WA and NT. Thanks for sharing your photographic moments and taking such meticulous notes of your daily travels. Take care. Caroline

Memories of travels past
It is exciting to see what you are up to and I hope tomorrow's excursion to snap the Steam Train is a great success. I can't believe how fast the time has gone since our trip to Carlisle last year. Other photos remind me of a past visit with Kathleen and my uncle Michael to White Scar cave, and a drive and walk around part of the 3 peaks in 1984 with cousin Steve who used to do heaps of long distance running in that area years ago. Looking forward to seeing your final photos of the train and viaduct.

Ephesus
We went to Turkey many, many years ago when they were first opening up the country for tourism. We had to fly in at night into a military airport, quite scary really as soldiers with guns escorted you off the plane. Anyway we did your trip and it brought back all the memories, but it was so hot the day we went. Have a great time

Great Writing Style and love the Photo's too
I'm glad I discovered your blog about your recent trip to the Bodrum Peninsula. I love your writing style, and am enjoying reading about your adventures. I write a Bodrum Peninsula Travel Guide website, and hope you don't mind if I write a review of your travels on my site; feature some of your photo's; and include links back to your pages on Travelblog. Thanks, Jay

Lucky you!
Hi Tracey & Bernie, I'm really glad you're enjoying Turkey. It's one of my favourite countries - have been there 3 times. Hope you're going to visit Goreme in Cappodoccia, Central Turkey. Amazing place, home to the ancient troglodytes who built homes in the strange pointed sandstone towers which proliferate the countryside. These were later used by the christians to escape persecution. So there is wonderful artwork inside those caves used as churches. Fascinating place. Good to take a balloon ride over the area for a spectacular view. Also try to get to Permukale - the calcified terraces there are AMAZING and the ancient Roman ruins are in excellent condition. There is a cave nearby which is a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is a place of pilgimage for both Christians, Muslims & Jews!! She is purportedly buried nearby. Well worth a visit. Cheers, Caroline

Turkey is AWESOME.
Thanks Tracey, you're obviously having a wonderful time. Hope you get OUT there and experience the Turkish people themselves. I never stay in a resort, too many things to see/do. Hope you get to Central Turkey; Cappadocia and the troglodyte homes in Goreme are not to be missed. Gulay Gulay. Caroline

What a great way to celebrate!
I should have realised you would have a blog of your Pt Douglas trip. I enjoyed reading it and it brought back memories of our own trip of 2002 to Cairns/Pt Douglas. The snorkeling trip is one of my happiest traveling moments. Sounds like you had a wonderful celebration of your 30 year milestone!
