South America » Ecuador » Centre » Baños October 31st 2010

We took a bus from Mancora in Peru to Cuenca which turned out to be a lot longer than we were told. The bus was over an hour late which meant that we were late crossing the border into Ecuador and missed the connecting bus. The border crossing turned into a bit of a farce. We got stamped out of Peru no problem and then got taken by bus over the border into Ecuador where we were to change to connect with a bus going to Cuenca. Before being literally kicked off the bus with our bags dumped at our feet we both realised that although we were now in Ecuador, we hadn't gone through immigration and so had not been stamped into the country. This was also noted by the woman at the bus stop ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon October 30th 2010

Our first day in Arequipa we set about trying to book a tour of the Colca Canyon for the next day. We managed to find a cheap tour for 1 night that left the next day. Being tight as we are we opted for the budget accomodation option so were crossing our fingers it woiuld be ok. Tour booked we spent the day taking in Arequipa which we were pleasantly surprised by. Reading that it was Peru´s second largest city we both had visions of another Lima. However, it is much smaller, a lot prettier and less manic. The next mornign we got up and prepared for our Colca trip. We were collected by our guide and boarded the minibus. As we went round collecting the other people on our tour it became apparent that this ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Beni Department » Madidi October 21st 2010

We wanted to have a few days in the 'Amazon' which from what we´d heard was best and cheapest in Bolivia, north of La Paz. It isn´t really the Amazon proper, actually Madidi on the river Beni which flows into the Amazon. The only problem is that it is either a 20 hour rough bus ride or a flight away on a little plane. From the horror stories we´d heard of grown men crying through fear of the bus tumbling off a cliff and of 20 hour journeys on rubbish buses turning into epics with breakdowns and landslides we decided the better option of taking the plane, which is substantially more expensive but only takes 40 mins. So we set off for La Paz airport at 5am to get our flight an hour later and join ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Copacabana October 8th 2010

We took the overnight bus from Cusco and headed to Copacabana. We were assured that the bus was ´directo´but in true South American style ´directo´never actually means direct as we know it. About 40 mins from the Bolivian border all those going to Copa were told to get off the bus and collect their luggage. All 22 of us were then piled into a 15 seater collectivo and were driven the rest of the way to the border. At the border we all piled out again, got stamped out of Peru, walked across no mans land to the Bolivian border, got stamped into Bolivia and finally got back on our collectivo that was waiting at the other side for us. Worryingly the collectivo we got on had no tread on any of its tyres. Thankfully it ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail September 27th 2010

We had an early start to be picked up by our tour group for the Inca Trail. We´d had it planned for about 6 months as there are limited numbers allowed on the trail every day and it´s really popular so it was rather surreal that we were finally about to do it. So at 5.30am when it was still dark we met up with the rest of our group and set off. To begin with we had about a 2 hour drive to the start of the trail. When we got there we were issued with our rather massive sleeping bags and roll mats and off we set, first posing for a famiy photo under the Inca Trail sign. We finally set off on what was supposed to be an easy day of walking but ... read more

We arrived into Lima not quite knowing what to expect as the Lonely Planet paints quite a dark picture of Lima with theft and pollution. However, once we were out of the airport and in our taxi, whilst there seemed to be lots of pollution, it all seemed safe. We were staying in Miraflores, where most of the backpackers stay. We were only intending to stay the one night so we checked into our hostel and went for a walk about Miraflores. There is a park in the middle of the district which was heaving with people. There seemed to be some sort of flower sale with lots of stalls and as we walked further on we discovered a mini amphitheatre where people were just dancing to salsa playing from a sound system. There were dozens ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José September 13th 2010

After spending the last night of our honeymoon sitting in JFK airport we finally arrived in San Jose on Monday morning extremely tired and hungry- Taca airlines possibly serve the worst flight meal we´ve ever tasted. We managed to figure out where to get the bus and took it into San Jose. After a sweaty walk through a very busy town we arraived at our guesthouse where we immediately crashed out for a few hours. When we woke we went to book a tour to the Poas Volcano for the next day and then headed into town to see what San Jose had to offer. The answer is not a lot. We took a walk around the market and realised very quickly that we better get learning our Spanish or we were not going to get ... read more

North America » United States » New York September 5th 2010

Kat and I arrived on the Sunday lunch time just over a week after the wedding in New York. This must have been one of the most long anticipated honeymoons ever so we were really looking forward to arriving. We went straight to our hotel, well I say straight as it took us ages to negotiate the subway from JFK to our hotel on Long Island. Still we arrived eventually, the hotel in the middle of some warehouses, not the best area but had an amazing view over Manhattan, right next to the Queenboro Bridge. We went straight out once we had checked in to the hotel. We were pretty tired and a little jet lagged so we took it easy the first day. We went for a wander through Times Square and Central Park before ... read more

Europe » Romania » Muntenia » Bucharest September 24th 2008

We left Sarajevo on Saturday morning and took a bus to Jajce. There was not a whole lot going on apart from some Bosnian-Croatian ceremony so we took a walk round town and had some lunch trying to kill time until our bus to Banja Luka. We arrived in Banja Luka that evening which is quite possibly the pits of the earth! A necessary stop, unfortunately, to catch over night train to Belgrade. The bus station is miles outside the city centre, adjacent to the 'international' train station however when trying to buy tickets we were told by the very unhelpful man that not only did they not accept cards but the nearest ATM was 5 km away. So, we got on a bus to the centre on the lookout for the 1st ATM we came ... read more

Europe » Bosnia & Herzegovina » East » Sarajevo September 12th 2008

We've been on our hols round a few of the Balkan countries for almost a week now although it feels like much longer. We started by flying into Split where we got a bus to the centre from airport and met the girl whose apartment we were staying in, which was really nice, a tiny little thing which we had to ourselves with kitchen and everything you'd need for much longer than the one night we were staying. We took in the small town with it's nice waterfront, old Roman palace and random 'beach' (more like a bit of concrete with horrible pebbly bit) but it was hot all the same so it was really nice. After we had done that we inevitably ended up in several bars and stayed there for the day. We ate ... read more
