Train We caught the bus from grandpa and grandma's place to get to the train station. We took the train from Toulouse-Matabiau to Carcassonne, painless, standard issue train. Ville Basse We walked the mile from the Carcassonne train station in ville basse to the citadel, with a requisite stop at Jen's new favorite store Etam. We explored the walls, the shops, the chapel, and had lunch. Carcassonne is an incredible place and we will have to come back to stay at the hotel on-site and take some time to visit the wine country.... read more

Childhood Memories We drove out with grandpa and grandma on one of our only two excursions by car on the trip. Papy cannot drive well anymore so I ended up doing most of it at the wheel of his low mileage but beat up Citroen Xantia. Tarabel is not that far, maybe 15 miles east of downtown Toulouse, but despite recent growth, it still is in the countryside, the equivalent of Sunbury to Columbus. Growing up in Texas Axel and I used to fly out here every summer to visit the grandparents for a month and spend time with mom's aunts, uncles and cousins whiling the summer away in papy and mamy's house in the countryside village of Tarabel. We grew up out here and had a lot of fond memories, it was great to come ... read more

. . . and the Country Music thing didn't work out for us. So it was just a long weekend trip away to take Samantha the Saab on her first long trip and also to use those newly-acquired benefits of working for Marriott. We stayed at the Renaissance, and though being a huge convention hotel and empty that weekend, it was still a pleasant place to stay. We visited the classic places (Ryman Auditorium; Country Music Hall of Fame - just the outside since it was closed; Belle Mead plantation, etc.), walked downtown, went to the bars.... read more

Coming In You'd think that because it's in the Caribbean, it's not too much trouble to get to, but being exclusive requires some restrictions. So we flew into St. Maarten so we could clearly see what we were NOT missing! That place looked like Jamaica on Spring Break, all dilapidated. That doesn't mean we weren't in for a bit of a scare when we came into St. Barths on the STOL aircraft. The runway is so oddly located and short that these special aircraft are required and the approach requires a last minute nose-dive onto the runway in order to clear a large hill at its western end. We later heard stories that some cars had been clipped, even carried away from this hill by landing aircraft. Le Manapany Hotel & Cottages We stayed at the ... read more

We celebrated New Year's on the Bund watching the fireworks over Pudong with Stefan and Markus, my fellow students at UIBE. As I described in the previous blog, these guys had been traveling all over China, as far as Tibet and we had agreed to meet up in Shanghai. We came down on the double-stacked "soft sleeper" express train from Beijing, sleeping across from each other on the top bunks, a great improvement from the tripled-stacked "hard sleeper" I had taken in October to Inner Mongolia. Poor Jennifer was so sick and we had to share what I had come to view as luxury in China, but was clearly a little bit of a shock for the uninitiated. We stayed at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music which had dorms that served as a hostel. Yet more ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Chaoyang district December 27th 2000

I've unfortunately had to come back to this blog retrospectively, so I will do the best to recant what we did. This is also before the time of my digital camera and so photos have to be scanned, I will do my best to make this happen. As the title vaguely alludes, this blog will focus on Jennifer's visit in December of 2000 and January of 2001 to China when I was living in Beijing since September 2000, studying Mandarin at UIBE in Chaoyang District (among other things). This is the only time I was in Beijing that was not covered by the hundreds of pages I wrote in my paper journals during the six months that I was there, so I'd like to do my best to tell the story of a time that might ... read more
