Our last port of call was Ketchikan, the southern most town in Alaska, closer to Seattle than Anchorage. Ketchikan is a true fishing port, home of "The Deadliest Cacth" This was our one real rainy day of the whole 24. We walked around the town for a short time. This was also the most cars/traffic we saw. I'd love to have this traffic every day! This is the home of the totem poles, we saw a couple in town, but needed to take a short ride to see the real village, etc. Unfortunately we did not have enough time for that. We had booked a tour on a high speed catamaran to go to the Misty Fjords National Monument. It's called a national monument because it's not easily accessible. This was another unbelievable sight. Even the ... read more

Can't remember where I left off. We left Girdwood and continuued south to Seward on the Kenai peninsula. Hiked up to Exit glacier. Can't even describe it, words do not do it justice. We continue to have lots of great food and then on Sunday boarded our ship, the Zaandam, to start the end of our trip. We've had no cell or internet service, they do have satellite service but even that is intermittant and very slow. We cruised for 2 days thru Glacier Bay, skirting some bad weather in College Fiord and saw magnificent glaciers, sea otters, eagles and whales. We then made port in Haines. Took a high speed Catamaran up the canal to Skagway. Skagway is the most picturesque town we've been to. What you would expect Alaska to look like (withouth the ... read more

Wasila seem so long ago but it was only Monday. We enjoyed the state fair in Palmer. But the "fair" food is not as good as ours. As for the rest of Wasila, as Cathy said "it's a highway with 3 strip malls". That's about it and WE couldn't see Russia! We left Tuesday morning and headed for Anchorage, only a 40 mile drive. Anchorage is a big city "wannabe". We weren't impressed and most of the people in the North country (as the Alaskans like to call it) say you fly into Anchorage and then head North into Alaska. They don't have much use for the city apparently. Cathy and I both agreed we'd have to live in Fairbanks. We did see a film about the earthquake of Good Friday, 1964. Incredible damage, cliffs fell ... read more

Some photos from Denali National Park. Sorry it takes so long to get these to you. I have to find a computer to download from my camera to a flash drive and then from the flash drive to this blog. I'm sure there must be an easier way, but for now this is it. Enjoy!!!... read more

While Cathy was busy writing the blog, I was downloading pictures, hoping to post them here, but the computer here at this lodge blocks that, so I have to wait until Anchorage to post pictures. So now I have to tell our stories. Cathy is so much better at this but here goes. While Cathy and Neil were getting lots of exercise on their 4 mile hike, John and I chose to go flight seeing. We boarded a small Cessna 206 airplane, 5 passengers and the pilot, Bill. John got to be co-pilot. We all had to give our weight to which they automatically add 10, they probably are used to people lying! We sqweezed ourselves into this plane sitting shoulder to shoulder and knees to back. The takeoff on this short runway surrounded by mountains ... read more

We arrived yesterday about 4:00 pm. It was a 200 mile drive from Denali to Wasilla. It was Neil's turn to drive. He really doesn't stop for photo ops, so we will get there faster. We made it in 4hours , so that was pretty good. One stop for gas and a snack. All scenic, no towns really. It is more windy, so even though it is 50 degrees, it feels colder then up North where it was in the 30's. We popped over to the State Fair. Well... I just want to say that even though I am a chubba, We must look a lot younger then John and Trisha, because they got in for senior rate at $8.00' and we had to pay regular price at $13.00. I thought Trisha was going to pee ... read more

Hello everyone from the lower 48! We are starting to talk like the Alaskans. Friday afternoon we started our 92 mile journey to the Denali Backlodge. We had the bus pretty much to ourselves. There were about 20 people on the bus, so each person had a seat on each side of the bus. Great for viewing wildlife and scenery. We saw a bear running at a pretty good clip. Let's just say, most definitely this grizzly would catch me.we saw Dahl sheep, with the big horns, and a coyote eating a ground squirrel that he caught. He ate the tali and on. The magpie birds were waiting for the clean up, but the coyote ate everything. We also saw a porcupine toddling along. I saw a golden eagle soaring. When we arrived it was 7:30 ... read more

ATTEMPT AT PCITURES, I think we may have this working. Needed to get pictures from camera. These cabins outside Denali have a real computer, so I downloaded to the computer then copied to a flash drive, didn't want to leave on an unknown computer, then copied to this blog site. We 're out of time so we may have to give detail about pictures later, just enjoy! Trisha... read more

Thursday morning, we,re off to Denali National Park. With no stops should take about 2 hours, but of course we will stop, especially if John is driving. We will stay outside the park tonight and then tomorrow, get on a bus bright and early,6 am, I think, and head into our lodge. It's 95 miles in, but they do the scenic tour and we're told it will take about 6 hours!!! We're not sure about cell phone or internet access, so we could be out of communication until we leave the park on Sunday and get to Wasilla, Sunday afternoon. Toodles for now. P.s. we're still working on the picture thing, when you see them, you'll know we figured it out. Love to all.... read more
