The Doans

Doan x 4

We are a family of four, embarking on a lifetime of world adventures.

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” – Maya Angelou

Friday, April 5th- We woke up later than usual, and headed over to Jim and Kelley's house to make crepes for brunch. I had been having some bad allergies in the morning and they weren't fun. We ate and made crepes for about an hour then decided to take a walk around the area of their house. At this point I couldn't breathe through my nose and I was pretty miserable, so I don't think enjoyed the walk as much as the others did. To make matters worse, after the walk we went to a nature reserve which was almost like a rainforest filled with tons of pollen and mold which happen to be two things that I am allergic to. The nature reserve was cool despite the fact that I felt sick. We watched an ... read more

Saturday, April 6th-The focus of our day was Jim, Kelly, Opal, Mom, Dad, Quinn & I took a boat to Kapiti island. Kapiti Island is a nature reserve on the coast of Paekakariki. It is home to many birds of all shapes and colors. In the past few years Kapiti Island has been rid of all pests that hurt native birds. The part of the island we were on is one big mountain. We climbed half-way and had a picnic, then climbed to the summit. Once we got to the bottom we took a boat back to the mainland. On the way home we stopped at a little ice cream store. They mix whatever fruit and ice cream you wanted in a special machine. I had strawberry and raspberry with chocolate ice cream. We also stopped ... read more

It has been a long time since my last blog, so I will fill you in on my adventures. On Tuesday we woke up in the morning to visit the infamous kiwi bird. The kiwi bird is an endemic New Zealand bird that is most closely related to the emu and ostrich. In the afternoon, we went to a beach where they also had a trek up a mountain to the mermaid pools, where when the tide goes out, the pools fill with water. The pools are usually very warm because they have the whole day to warm in the sun. The day that we went, the water was probably about 18-19 degrees Celsius. It has been fun switching over to the metric system. I don't know why Americans don't use it because it makes way ... read more

Tuesday April 2nd: In the morning we visited the famous NZ Kiwi birds at the kiwi house in Whangerei. We also saw the reptiles from the dinosaur age, the Tuatara. At the recovery and rehabilitation center we saw a talking Tui bird. Their calls sound a little like R2D2. We went to the Moari history museum nearby. We learned about gum trees and the many ways their resin was used: jewelry, sculpture, medicine & ship building. The flax plant was also used to make clothing and baskets and was a very important resource in that culture. Later in the day we went to a kauri forest. The Kauri is a tree native to NZ that was once all over NZ and was prized by European merchants. They grow very large and the forest was a little ... read more

Kaia We started our first day with a breakfast of tea and crumpets. Yum! We headed out for a kayak tour in the Roukaka Estuary. There were a lot of interesting shells that we wouldn't see at home. I collected a few to take back with us. We had a picnic and I tried salmon and cream cheese on crackers and we had fresh pears, passion fruit and feijoa. It is fun to try new fruits that we don't have at home. Passion fruit is my favorite. We spent the afternoon at the beach. It is much bigger than beaches I've been to in the U.S. and there are hardly any people there. On a busy day there are only about 20 people there to share the WHOLE beach! My favorite activity so far was playing ... read more

It has been a five years since our last international travel experience and we are looking forward to sharing this trip to New Zealand with Quinn and Kaia. We plan to spend the first week of our travels on the North island and the second week on the South island, including an overnight in Doubtful Sound! It has been a long time since we have seen the dear friends we will visit and we cannot wait to be introduced to their daily lives and activities. Thank you in advance to Jim & Kelly and Nate & Tiff. We look forward to sharing photos and stories with you, our dear friends and family here at home!... read more

We left Hoi An on Thursday morning and headed for Saigon. Since we had made a change to our schedule, we ended up flying Indochine airlines. We arrived safely, but the food and service were not what Vietnam Airlines provides. Our driver arrived on time and shuttled us from the airport to the hotel, giving us a brief history of Vietnam on the way. He worked for the Americans during the war and told us that he'd not used his English much in the years since - though as we discovered with most, it was great. Taking our guide's recommendation, we stayed at the "historic five star" Rex Hotel. It was base station for many Western journalists during the Vietnam War (or the "American War" as those in current day Vietnam refer to it). I emphasize ... read more

So I did receive word that many of you couldn't get to the blog. Something is up with the website and I'm guessing that is why we're having difficulty as well. What can I say? - It was free! (Check the previous entry for the photos added - finally! ) We decided to delay our move to Saigon and spend and extra day at the beach today. We made all of the arrangements upon which time I managed to sunburn myself terribly. So John is currently out for a bike ride among the rice paddies and I am cooling off in the business center. An appropriate time for an old fashioned update. We left Hue on Sunday morning - a national holiday - Women's day. Our tour guide brought me a big bouquet of flowers to ... read more

Hello family and friends! We are so disapointed to share that our promised access to computers has not been what it should be. While we are able to enter text, we have spent over 3 hours in the past 2 days trying to upload photos and updates for Quinn, Kaia, and all of you. We have decided today that we are going to let the blog go quiet until we reach Saigon, and will enter our updates (now having been done by hand) if access permits. For those of you outside of our day to day contact, we will still complete the blog when we get home as a way to share our travels with you - albeit delayed. We have experienced our first morning of sun today and are headed out to enjoy it. We ... read more

We have resurfaced in Hoi An tonight and wanted to do a little recap of our whereabouts for the last 4 days. (aside: we are currently being serenaded in the business center by a band playing Barry Manilow - Copa Cabana with a Fillipino twist) Where to start.... Through the mist, haze and down pour, we left for Halong Bay on Thursday morning. The 3 hour drive was rather sleepy and uneventful as it was hard to see through the traffic and rain. We got our first glimpses of the rice paddies surrounding Hanoi and a few water buffalo sitings to boot. This was not the way we imagined this trip to what is to become the world's 8th wonder. The bay was under so much fog that we couldn't see the limestone karsts that make ... read more
