Beijing At last, a blog entry! We’re probably more excited about this than you are… it’s been a long battle to get the internet to work in our room. First we had to pay for it, then buy a cord, then get that cord fixed because it was from a shady shop on the street, then get the outlet fixed, then figure out why my computer refused to get online even when it recognized the network. Anyways, after a few days of effort and lots of help from kind Chinese people, here we are. It’s only been a week since we arrived but there is so much to talk about, so we’re excited to write. First, before any story-telling (where we went, what we did, what we ate, etc.), here, for your reading pleasure, are a ... read more

Ok. At last we’re putting up part two… I promise that when we’re in China these posts will be a lot more regular and timely! So, if you recall, Wednesday we left New Zealand with our hearts full, but excited for the next part of tour: Brisbane, Australia. Wednesday: We flew into Brisbane just in time to see the most incredible sunset I have ever imagined. Apparently it’s a pretty common thing there, but it was breathtaking. From the airport we went straight to institute with the local young adults. Cool thing- I stopped to talk to two Chinese-speaking Elders who were there. Then this familiar-looking Australian guy showed up and they started speaking Chinese to him, too… turns out, we were in the MTC together. Small world. Institute was interesting. I’ll admit that we were ... read more

Saturday morning we were allowed to sleep in, so we got up around nine so that our host sister, Pearl, could take us to the outdoor market. We bought some great food (fish fritters and beef shish kebabs) and some souvenirs- a ceramic Maori flute and a name-painting that says “Buss Family, New Zealand 2013.” Perfect. We met back up with the group and did an impromptu performance at a mall, then did some sight-seeing. Auckland is surrounded by about 50 volcanoes and craters, so we hiked to the top of one. Mount Eden… beautiful view. Had lunch at the top: fish and chips. Most excellent. Took a little tour through Auckland by bus- our driver, Bruce, worked miracles with that bus. Took us down tiny one-way roads through construction, by the docks, above and beyond ... read more

Thursday: Started the day off right with a temple trip. The temple in Hamilton is beautiful, set on a hill in the middle of the countryside. The celestial room is so unique- the walls have murals painted on them in different shades of white, all depicting New Zealand-type scenery. Beautiful. I hope that is what heaven is like. We rushed off from the temple to sing at a high school. The majority of the tour was school visits, so I’ll describe the basic idea and add any particular details per school as necessary. We would go into the gym/auditorium, be welcomed by the school, introduce ourselves, and sing a few songs. We tended to sing our Polynesian and comic songs- big hits with the kids. With that in mind, we were performing almost constantly. Just that ... read more

Good Morning New Zealand!

And so, the first leg of our epic journey began with an incredibly hectic Monday. We woke up in the morning feeling pretty good about our day- just needed to do laundry, finish packing, check out of our apartment at 3:30 pm, and meet up with the choir to load the bus at 6. Well, things started to get complicated when I left for an internship appointment at 11 and then Kaylee didn’t feel too hot and needed to get some medicine from the student health center. We threw our clothes in the wash before we left, with just enough money left on our laundry card to dry two loads… perfect. Well… my meeting went great and I got some great leads, but Kaylee had complications at the health center since she is no longer a ... read more

Aloha! Welcome to our blog. It may not look like much yet, but sit back and enjoy; I promise things are about to get interesting. It the eve of our departure from Hawaii- tomorrow night (most likely dark and stormy) at 11 pm we will board a plane to New Zealand where we will explore glow worm caves, travel the North Island, eat lots of mutton, and sing our little hearts out (we're on a concert choir tour). After a week, we will fly to Australia and repeat the whole thing (minus the glow worms, North Island, and sheep... so, mostly just singing). The end of the tour signals our return to Colorado for a period of approximately 8 weeks, 3 days, 22 hours, 15 minutes and 39 seconds, after which we will leave once more, ... read more
