IT SURE IS HOT HERE I wake up excited to see the best of Shanghai. As we leave tomorrow and head back to Nanjing, it’s my last day here. I feel like I wasted Wednesday. Today I decide to take it easy, drink lots of water, stop when I’m hungry, and most of all, take a taxi instead of walking everywhere. My body just isn’t used to this extreme heat and humidity, and there’s no sense in pushing it so hard. It’s so hot here that when you’re just standing you sweat - it pours down your face. The only other place I’ve experience this type of heat was in Belize a few months ago. Somehow this heat is worse tho - most likely because I’m not within a short walk of a beach! TAKING A SICK DAY The heat overtakes me today. It’s bearing down on me, smothering me under a heavy blanket that crushes my lungs. I’ve never known heat like this before. I’ve always thought Minnesota got hot and humid - I’ve nearly gotten heatstroke before during some July rodeo days. But this heat is different. It blocks everything else from one’s consciousness until your only thought is: I am hot. I took off this morning after spending a few hours updating my blog and posting pictures. My first mistake was to wait so long for breakfast. My second was to set off at a brisk trot for the Bund River Promenade. After looking around, I decided it was time for lunch. Unfortunately, about the same time the sky decided to open up and dropped buckets of ... read more

Our hotel in Shanghai isn't quite as nice as the one in Nanjing, although it may actually be ritzier. The room is badly designed. Didn't they have a feng shu artist work on this?! It's a long rectangle. You walk in and there is a closet on one side and the bathroom on the other. There is a large tub, but the shower is just next to it without a door. Thus you get the tub wet when you shower. A row of shelves houses loose tea, cups and one of those fabulous heat-water-in-seconds electric teapots I fell in love with while in Europe. Next is the living room with a desk and TV. Only when you sit at the couch you look at the computer NOT the TV! A beautiful wood wall with pocket door ... read more

I'm tired today, oh so tired. We went to bed late, trying to get as much packed as possible. Jesse works a lot over here, checking his email every morning and night and then responding in order to catch his coworkers in the US and Mexico. That left me with the job of packing up. We're leaving most of our stuff here at the Crowne Plaza and bringing just one small bag to Shanghai. Because I was heading to work with Jesse and we both wanted breakfast, I wake up much earlier than I'm used to. It might be a long, long day. EMERSON PLANT TOUR I get to see where Jesse works today. In preparation I'm wearing long pants, and right before the tour begins he gives me these hard plastic cups which go over ... read more

We were Olympic athletes in Nanjing, China -- well almost. We might not have played ping pong very well, but we were playing at the Nanjing Olympic center, which hosted 10th National Games in 2005. First pictures of the stadium (pulled from http://english.peopledaily.com.cn)... read more

SPOILING MYSELF Today, Monday, I’m pampering myself. It wasn’t even my idea, but I’m so going with it. Joanne, the woman we dined with the night before, set up an appointment for herself and I at a local nail shop that her neighbor recommended. Apparently, she asked about it, and her Chinese neighbor insisted upon calling and then booking the appointment, which are supposedly tough to get. It was a little early for me - she picked me up at 9:30 a.m. - but I gamely roused myself in time to hit Starbucks for a frappachino and fruit salad to get me going (50 RNB). I’ve only had one pedicure before — a short one before someone’s wedding — so I didn’t have a lot to compare this one too. As always, we had to confront ... read more

I don’t wake up in the middle of the night like Jesse warned I might, but I do wake up pretty early on Sunday. 6 a.m. Gives me time to edit some videos. Then I head downstairs to level 9 to take advantage of his daily breakfast. The buffet is enormous and includes both Chinese and Western offerings. I find the rice gruel I ate the day before on the plane; this time it’s flavored with chicken and tastes much better. I grab a piece of the vegetable I saw so much of the day before in the market. It looks kinda like a cross between a melon, a coconut and a potato. The texture inside the rough outer layer is like a potato. The fried rice here is different, looking whiter than it does at ... read more

For the first time I'm staying in a hotel room that isn't ugly. In fact, this room is beautiful, with deep, dark wood and bamboo accents. There's lots of storage - closets and shelves tucked everywhere. I've never been impressed with hotels; they just are. You're there to sleep, usually, while you're on an adventure. I've been known to sleep in dives so that I have money for food and coffee and wine and Broadway shows. (You don't want to know what some of the places I stayed at looked like in Europe. Ugh.) And typically I just wish they'd take down the paintings because they're so ugly and maybe stick with solid comforters too without terrible prints. This place, the Crowne Royale in downtown Nanjing, room 5211 on floor 52, is relaxing to be in. ... read more

I’M NEARLY TO NANJING I am excited this morning, Saturday, Aug. 15, 2008. Soon, very very soon, I’ll see my Jesse. And that’s really why I’ve made this journey halfway around the world. I have plenty of time to wait in the Beijing airport for my flight. It doesn’t board until 20 minutes before taking off. I find a place to plug in my laptop, taking a cue from the other man in the waiting area. The plug-ins at Gate 17 are hidden under metal caps in the floor. Clever. Lucky for me, it’s an all-around plug-in, not like the strange one I found last night in the hotel. There are many more holes than my 3-prong needs and it makes a slight spark when I plug it in. But the important thing is it charges. ... read more
