Camping Reminds me of that well known (?) book ‘Morton Mouse Goes Camping’ where he pitches his tent in the dark and accidentally he is camping in the safari park.
Viernam War Simplistically I think the USA had a policy of stopping 'the spread of Communism'. In UK the anti war protest movemnent was huge with a massive march to the USA Embassy in London in 1968. Also many 'pop' songs were anti Vietnam war. The following is 'sarcastic'
words of a song -
Come on all of you big strong men
Uncle Sam needs your help again
he's got himself in a terrible jam
way down yonder in Viet Nam so
put down your books and pick up a gun we're
gonna have a whole lotta fun
(CHORUS)
And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for
don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die
Come on generals, let's move fast
your big chance has come at last
now you can go out and get those reds
cos the only good commie is the one that's dead and
you know that peace can only be won when we've
blown 'em all to kingdom come
Safe ? Glad that you survived the bike (if not the driver !). Glad to see the helmet but not so happy about the sleeveless arms which would have been a bit of a mess in a fall.
Hello Your rucksack must be bulging.
I looked Hoi An up on internet and it seems a nice place and I presume you are next off to Cham Island for the diving ?
Various - just to show I've read it all Wednesday seems a busy day. Why would they sell you a visa for a date 6 months previous.
Saturday - you missed the most important info - who was playing in the football match ?
200 days gone - 120 to go......
photographs Are you dong something different with the photos -when I double click on them they are staying small whch means they are poor quality when I try to download them. Not good if you want me to save them.
Very interesting I've just caught up with your latest journals Tamsin and am really impressed with all you've done. Your photos are great. Don't know how you find the time or the places to do all the writing. Enjoy.
The Horrors and St Ethelburga's Yes, it is sad that man's inhumanity to man did not stop in 1945 but has carried on rippling from continent to continent. Pam and I agree that the only response is one of thanks to have the good fortune to be born where we were and when we were. Pam and I are currently talking to Leigh and Iris about getting a sculpture called 'Thornflower' cast to stand in St Ethelburga's Church in the City (rebuilt after the second IRA bomb destroyed it and now a Centre for Reconciliation and Peace) in memory of your grandparents and Pam's parents. The sculpture is by Charlotte Salmon who I know from the School of Meditiation whose grandmother was murdered in Treblinka.
I don't suppose the German people have any more idea than the Cambodian people 'why' these horrors erupt or the Russians understand Stalin. Ideologies and religions certainly sometimes seem to magnify rather than reduce them. This is most remarkable when all the Traditional Religions from Anabaptism to Zoroastrianism have peace at their heart.
We hope you also find the peace and the tranquillity of the temples of Cambodia, that is no less a part of reality.
Love and stay safe
Pam and Ian
