The lady in the booth keeps saying something, but the fact that she speaks extremely softly and that the words she utters might be English, but sound more like some Asian language doesn't help me understand what she's trying to tell me. I'm at the Thai border, I just got my exit stamp out of Malaysia, and I'm still very sleepy, having caught the bus from Penang to Hat Yai at 5am. A line of impatient-looking Chinese people forms behind me, and I lean down and put my ear through the tiny window so I can hear her desperate attempts better. "You go to polee stashawn in Nakhon, you ge' one mo' mon." I try to tell her that the 60-day visa I have should be sufficient for my travel needs in Thailand, and finally she ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town November 13th 2009

As I make my way to Georgetown on the RM0.50-ferry, I am welcomed by a whole bunch of skyscrapers peeking out of a cloudy haze. Not exactly the best introduction, but once I get off the boat and enter the small streets lined with old, slightly decrepit, but charming houses, I feel like I've entered the real Penang. My host Michel currently resides in a guesthouse in the heart of the historic centre. He's a 46-year old Frenchman, and has been travelling around the world for the last two and a half years. For 14 months, he travelled through Europe on 78 flights with Ryanair, all booked in one day, and all for €0.01 each. As I find out in the course of the day, he's gay, which I don't care much about. His room in ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Cameron Highlands November 1st 2009

There are three things that define the Cameron Highlands more than anything else: tea plantations, strawberry farms, and a cooler climate than in the lowlands of Malaysia. The main activities here include sampling the highland teas, picking your own strawberries at one of the many farms, and hiking through the dense jungle. After checking into a hostel in Tanah Rata, the main town for travellers in the Highlands, I go to a food court for lunch. The Chinese stall I choose is operated by an elderly Chinese couple, both of which seem to be deaf-and-dumb. As I inspect the menu, the lady comes up to me, making eating gestures, thus asking what I want to eat. I point at hokkien mee goreng, and she gives me a thumbs-up and makes a drinking gesture, and I point ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Taman Negara National Park October 29th 2009

I arrive at Kuala Lumpur without feeling too overly excited, having stopped there two times before, and roughly knowing what awaits me. The bus ride to the city and the train ride to a suburb are quite hassle-free. When I walk through the exit gate of the train station, a mean-looking conductor motions for me to throw my ticket into the bin so I can't reuse it. Interesting system. When it comes to getting a taxi, though, I'm a bit at a loss as to how that system works. People seem to queue up for taxis, at least some of them, other ones are just hanging around. There are not enough taxis, so I have to wait for half an hour until I get one to drop me off at my host's place, which is a ... read more

Europe » Macedonia » Ohrid » Ohrid March 25th 2009

After the rather unpleasant incident on the Albanian side of the border, I got stamped into Macedonia without further ado. They actually had anti-corruption stickers everywhere warning foreigners not to hand over any money, which would have been plenty helpful when I'd entered Albania. There were no buses or taxis to the closest town and I was the only guy crossing the border, so I had to walk for a couple of kilometres before I finally managed to score a ride to Ohrid. I was quite happy when I arrived there half an hour later and the sun hadn't set yet, so I could get a glimpse of this town in daylight. I contacted my host Karen, who fetched me shortly afterwards from the central square in the old town, and took me to her place, ... read more

Europe » Albania » North » Shkodër March 24th 2009

That was my first go at speaking Albanian. I tried to say 'Yes', and inevitably started speaking Spanish again, since the non-English foreign language programming in my brain always comes up with Spanish. I then proceeded to say 'jo', which I usually say when I want to say 'yes' in German, but then realized that it means 'no' in Albanian. So finally I managed to find the right word: 'Po'! Great success! During the ten days that I stayed in Albania, I had very good intentions, but ended up learning only maybe three more words/phrases: falum nderit - thank you; sa kushton - how much is it; pa mish - without meat. Of course it didn't help at all that the Albanian language is related to absolutely no other language, since it is presumably of Illyrian ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Kotor March 11th 2009

Getting into Montenegro proved to be a bit of a pain in the ass for me. I went to buy the ticket an hour or so before the bus was leaving, and had to pay 83.50kn instead of 77kn, the price I had been told on two separate occasions on previous days. The lady who sold the tickets couldn't give me an adequate reason for this sudden change. The next unfortunate thing was the fact that the bus company was Globtur, a Bosnian company which holds the monopoly for the trip from Dubrovnik to Montenegro. So they can pretty much do as they please. I tried to go on the bus with my luggage, but a really nasty conductor signaled me to put my backpack outisde into the luggage compartments. So I went and did that, ... read more
