Hi everyone so what we have been working on lately is getting the new orphanage set up so that all the kids can live there. With the donations we have received, we have made 6 bunkbed bedframes, purchased 12 mattresses, 40 blankets, desks (kids have to supply their own desk to go to school), school uniforms, shelving for clothes, food and paid for some medical expenses for 2 very sick children. We want to get the orphanage owner (Lucy) fired or even charged or in jail. She neglects the children in so many ways. If she were running an orphanage in Canada she would have been in jail longgggggg ago. What's equally devastating is that the social workers (I'm generalizing here) and child officers are just as bad. The social worker we met with this morning ... read more

Hi everyone sorry about the delay since the last update, we have been busy. Over the past week we had a few quiet days where we went to a few markets and into a couple towns to do some shopping. Then we had an ADVENTURE! This was how the adventure was supposed to happen: we were to be picked up early (7am) by our guide to drive to Hell's Gate National Park. It is only a 3 hour drive from where we live. We were then supposed to spend the day walking through the park and set up camp at Fisherman's Camp. The next day we were to get up early again and drive to Aberdare National Park and spend the day there and camp over as well. This is how the adventure actually went: We ... read more

Hello (JAMBO) greetings from Kenya friends and family-this is Rachel!!! We just returned from an amazing day in the Great Rift Valley visiting my good friend James that I met last year while here. He has helped me with child sponsorship and taught us a lot about the Maasai culture, all of which we got on video today! There's too much to write, but we were soooo intrigued by everything he shared about their unique traditions and ways of life. The three of us headed down to the other side of Ngong Hills in a cab-the sight was STUNNING! The land is flat and goes on forever. It's dry and dusty and acacia trees made us all think of the LION KING :) :) :) We had a very nice visit with James (who is an ... read more

Hello from Kenya On Tuesday we went to a town called Karen. Also known as 'white town'. This is the area where a lot of white people live, or come to shop. There is a shopping center with restaurants and a supermarket. We had pizza for lunch! not the greatest. We miss the food at home. We looked around town for a bit and then came back to go to the orphanage. The kids were tired and a little grumpy. We met with Lucy the orphanage owner. Rachel tried to get some information out of her, such as why some children were not in school when they are supposed to be. One child wasn't in school because she didn't have a pair of shoes. Rachel took her into the market and got her a pair, so ... read more

Saturday we went to see Jacob and mosses' (Rachel's sponser children) family at their home, in the Ngong Hills. They are Maasai. They live in a hut made of cow dung and sticks. 8 people sleep in the hut, where they also have a fire pit for cooking (inside), (smoky and smelly) and its smaller than my bedroom. We trekked up the Ngong hills to see the view of the Rift Valley. AMAZING!!!! (hopefully we can post pictures soon) Jacob's father wanted to have a 'meeting' with Rachel to discuss Jacob and Mosses. He is very happy and grateful that Rachel and her family have been able to help his sons. He dresses as traditional Maasai with beaded jewelry and stretched ears from earings. He has other sons who are educated Maasai, one of which spoke ... read more

Hi everyone We made it after long, long flights, meeting up in Amsterdam, it was easy and exciting! Our flight to Nairobi was on a double decker plane, and a highlight was that we flew over the Swiss Alps! We all got our entry visa, no luggage lost, and Grace (Mamma) was waiting to pick us up. They surprised us by taking us to a restaurant for dinner. Once we got home, there were 3 surprises: 1- tile in the bathroom, (last time Rachel said it was just cement), 2-a small sink in the bathroom (last time no sink) 3-hot (luke warm) water for the SHOWER!!!! I (tor) had a shower last night! Guess what? NO BUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first night we slept until the next afternoon, and never left the house. It was almost dark again ... read more
