The tale of our two travellers through Argentina & Chile during the latter part of 2010 and the first part of 2011

SANTIAGO LOOP - Wine, Salt and Sand This is our fifth & final blog and tracks our travels from Santiago in Chile, on to Mendoza, Cordoba and Salta in Argentina, then back to Chile in San Pedro de Atacama . Our second bus crossing of the Andes was even more spectacular than our first, despite it taking four hours to just cross the border! Having booked early we had the front seats on the top floor of the bus, so we had fantastic panoramic views the whole way. The journey from Santiago to Mendoza is only 250km, but it reaches an altitude of 3200m and passes within 20km of Cerro Aconagua (6962m), the highest peak outside the Himalayas. The rugged ascending climb (in Chile) culminates in a zig-zag road of 24 bends (see photo to right). ... read more

CHILE: ISLANDS AND VOLCANOES This section of our journey covers our travels from the Island of Chiloe in the south, northwards to Pucon, Valparaiso and finally Easter Island - all of which are in Chile. We have called it Islands and Volcanoes of which we saw many! At the end of our last blog we were in Puerto Varas a small peaceful town, but just a one night stop on our way to the island of Chiloe. Chiloe is the second largest island in South America and we spent a fabulous 4 days there with a hired car, numerous ferries and wall to wall sunshine! The views of the archipelago from both land and sea, framed by a ring of snow capped volcanoes, were spectacular (see video above and photo at end). Three things stand out ... read more

Thanks for all your messages on the blog – we enjoy reading them - keep them coming ;-) Most of this section of our trip has been in one area, albeit in 3 different locations - Torres Del Paine in Chile, then El Calafate & El Chalten in Argentina. These 3 locations are all in Patagonia and effectively in one huge national park filled with mountains lakes and glaciers. The shorter and last part of this blog covers our time in Bariloche, on the edge of Argentinean Patagonia and our journey back into Chile. From Ushuaia where we left off on the last blog, a 5.00am start and a 16 hour bus journey took us to Puerto Natales in Chile. An interesting journey including having a long wait at the Chilean border and being forced to ... read more

Antarctica » Antarctica January 30th 2011

Compared to the usual UK festivities, Christmas in BA was relatively quiet and relaxing. That is except for the fireworks that erupted a few minutes before midnight on Christmas Eve and continued for well over an hour. Although we had been forewarned, neither of us expected the city to turn into the war zone that it did. At first there were just a few bangs and explosions in the distance, but then the cacophony began. We sped to the top of our apartment block roof, where at 14 stories high, we virtually had a 360 degree view. Stretching into the distance we witnessed the cityscape bubble with fireworks - mainly rockets. The noise and heavy smell of gunpowder was both mesmerizing and magical. On Christmas day itself and with a friend from Hong Kong, we had ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires December 24th 2010

We arrived in Buenos Aires on 10th November and so far it has been fantastic. Everything has gone amazingly well and we're enjoying every minute of it. The apartment is perfect for us, about 4 miles out of town with a swimming pool and a direct tube & train line into the centre of the city. The weather started off sunny and in the low 20's - absolutely fantastic - but over the past week it's risen to low/mid 30's and has become a little humid, which is now making life a little more 'sticky'. Time for the occasional air conditioning! Marianne has settled into her daily 3 hour morning Spanish lessons, which she's really enjoying and her improvement has been quite noticeable. While she's there I do my house-husband bit, organise the afternoon's tours around ... read more
