Geo: 40.7492, 14.5007DAY FOUR (8/5)—PompeiLost and Found! After a farewell breakfast at our hotel in Sorrento, we sped north to the long forgotten city of Pompei. We had a live guide (Tatiana) who tried to use the "Whisper" headsets that allowed her to talk to us without shouting, and without interrupting others who were also touring. But technology being what it is, there was a buzz that sounded like a fly that was very annoying, so we stuck closely to Tatiana and toured the old-fashioned way.Pompei was first occupied in the 8th century BC. The Etruscans conquered the region, then the Saminites. The Romans took control in 200 BC and continued their reign until the end... a fateful day in 79 AD when Mt Vesuvius blew, and the 20,000 inhabitants died, mostly from gas fumes; all were ... read more

Geo: 40.6344, 14.6026DAY THREE (8/4)—Amalfi CoastThe coast is clear! The most appealing part of the Tauck "Classic Italy" itinerary, the one thing that attracted me most to this tour, was the time devoted to the Amalfi Coast. And despite very high expectations about how beautiful this part of the world is, I was not disappointed. The drive was right up there with one of the most beautiful we have ever taken – the 17-mile drive at Pebble Beach. After an elaborate breakfast in the hotel dining room, and some beautiful photos on the terrace overlooking at the Mediterranean, we boarded our bus and headed south along the coast. Not only was it exquisitely beautiful, it was horrifyingly challenging. Our driver deserved every Euro he made (he drives it three times a week!).Don't ever consider making this drive yo ... read more

Geo: 40.6263, 14.3757DAY TWO (8/3)—Arrival Day in ItalyThere's something about Paris, even if you just run between raindrops as you change planes. Somehow you just know there is romance in the air.We had a 4.5 hour layover at Charles de Gaulle before boarding yet another Air France flight, this time to our actual destination: Naples.I tried to find a Starbucks at the airport, to feed my Starbucks capitals coffee mugs addiction. None to be had. But I did grab a latte which was so much superior to the Nescafe that Air France served and called coffee. I had forgotten just how bad the French can be at that – no real beans, it seems, just an instant concoction of some sort, with orange foam floating on top. They have cafes, but where's the coffee?I wandered a ... read more

Geo: 40.84, 14.2529DAY ONE (8/2)—St. Louis > Atlanta > Paris > NaplesBuon Giorno! My husband and I are off on Tauck's "Classic Italy" adventure that will take us to the Amalfi Coast, Rome, Umbria, Tuscany, Florence and Venice over the next two weeks. We are traveling on Delta Airlines from St. Louis to Atlanta and then Air France to Paris, with Naples as our ultimate destination. I have dreamed of visiting the Amalfi Coast and our hotel in Sorrento sure looks to fill the bill. I can't wait.We arrived at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport two hours ahead. It was our first encounter with the airport since it was hit by a tornado in April 2011. Quite a bit of the glass was broken during the storm and many of the windows are still boarded up. Geo: 38.6276, -90.199Day 10We continued south on I-29 to St. Joseph, MO, outrunning a tremendous storm. Skies were incredibly black, and we learned later a tornado had touched down along our path … but luckily behind us. We took the Kansas City beltway (I-435) southeast around the city and got off in Independence to take in a Harry Truman sight. There are many, since he spent all but his White House days there. We decided on his home, which was quite attractive and the ranger made us much more knowledgeable about our 24th president. We took I-70 east through Columbia, MO, where we stopped off for a Steak 'N Shake, which ranked 2nd on our list of best meals this trip. We arrived home in St. Louis in early afternoon. We put 3600 miles on our ... read more

Geo: 41.2906, -95.9178Day 9After a tearful farewell to the WaTiki water park, we headed south and east on I-90 to Wall, SD, where we made the obligatory stop at Wall Drug. From their website: "If Ted & Dorothy can make it in the dustbowl days of the Dirty 30s, then there is no such place as Godforsaken in this great country we live in ... AMERICA. We are still here and gas prices are low. All signs lead to Wall Drug!"The small-town drugstore was purchased in 1931. The owners advertised free ice water to parched travelers heading to the newly-opened Mount Rushmore monument 60 miles to the west. It boasts 75,000 square feet and thousands of incredibly tacky SKUs. Worth a stop for the amusement factor.Wall Drug and The Badlands are at the same exit. So ... read more

Geo: 44.0812, -103.231Day 8Another early start to try and beat the crowds to Rushmore. I envisioned all those families at breakfast heading en mass to the wall of presidents. We drove back into "downtown" Rapid City on I-90 and went south on US-16 to Keystone, then 16A to Mount Rushmore. It is REALLY impressive. I was afraid of being disappointed, of standing there saying, “Is that all there is?” But not so.It is a work of art. It is so big, so commanding, and so very visible from so many places. The museum is informative and the movie is fascinating. Don't miss it. The displays are interactive, so when I pushed a button about safety, I heard one of the guys who helped build it say that no one died in the process of creating the monument, ... read more

Geo: 44.0812, -103.231Day 7After breakfast at the Cody (hot complementary buffet), we checked out and were at the BBC Museum again when it opened at 8. Last night we did the Western Art and Plains Indians. This morning we did the remaining three (Buffalo Bill, Firearms, Natural History). Not quite as interesting, but definitely worth the time. We devoted 4 hours in all, which was plenty if you aren't a gun aficionado. I have heard others who spent 2 days. You decide. We did a little shopping on Sheridan Road on the way out of town, including the Sierra Trading Post outlet. We took the Big Horn Scenic Byway (US14) east thru Greybull and Bighorn National Forest to Ranchester. Once again, AAA marked this route with dots, meaning "scenic", but the road didn't get scenic until we entered ... read more

Geo: 44.5264, -109.056Day 6 continuedWe got a snack at Canyon Lodge, took some photos of Tower Falls, met a mama buffalo and her calf and headed out of the NE entrance along the Beartooth Scenic Byway, which had only opened 3 weeks before after being closed all winter. We actually checked about whether it was still open when we entered the park, as the snow and cold weather had re-closed some mountain drives like Trail Ridge in Rocky Mountain NP.Beartooth involves traveling NE along US-212 through Cooke City to Red Lodge, MT. It's a climbing, winding road with lovely vistas, that takes you to 11,000+ feet. There were fields of snow still left from winter, and as we climbed to the pass, there were 8' walls of plowed snow lining the hairpin curves. Exciting, to say ... read more

Geo: 44.4887, -110.012Day 6We got an early start as we knew we had a long day ahead of us. We took the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway (US-14) west from Cody to the east entrance of Yellowstone NP. Lovely drive early on a glorious day.At the gate, we gave the ranger one of our newly acquired (at the Denver Mint) quarters featuring Yellowstone. I wish we had acquired $5-10 worth as almost none of the park employees had seen them yet. They were very popular when we showed them off.Our route took us through Fishing Bridge, Canyon, Tower Junction and out the NE Entrance. In our first stretch, a buffalo was assigned to greet the tourists and walked alongside us on the main road. Great picture taking.
