After a confusing early-morning flight out of lreland (fueled by leftover Chinese food) we arrived in Frankfurt, Germany around 10 am. Next challenge: find Karlsruhe. Karlsruhe is the city where Brittany's new apartment is located. The problem? We didn't know the address of the apartment. Problem number two: almost everything in Germany is closed on Sunday and Monday was a holiday. When we were at our hotel in Ireland we were curious as to how we planned on getting food, blankets, pillows, etc. The only food we had on us was spaghetti and snickers bars. We joked that at a minimum, we could boil the spaghetti in the hotel coffee maker and make snickers pasta to take with us for our first few days in Germany. Fortunately, we didn't have to resort to such measures, as ... read more

Going to Galway proved to be an excellent choice! The bus ride over was very scenic and Britt and I were eager to leave Dublin. Finding our hostel again proved to be a difficult chore, as the directions we were given placed us across the town from where our hostel was, just outside of Eyre Square. When we arrived in Galway, we soon learned that a major yacht race (the Volvo Ocean Race) had just completed a leg of their race which had been going on since October 4th. After exploring the town a bit, we wandered down to the docks to see what the excitement was about. It turns out, this race is to sailing what the Superbowl is to football. The crowds in this small town in Ireland would soon become home to tens ... read more

After a delayed flight at LAX and a long sprint through the San Francisco airport (fueled by freeze-dried strawberries and Gardettos... breakfast of champions), I met Brittany (my travel buddy) at the gate to our flight to Ireland, where she was stalling the flight crew from closing off the boarding so that we could both make it on to the flight. The flight itself was pretty uneventful, we tried (but failed) to get some sleep. Good thing Aer Lingus had movies and games... they kept us pretty entertained for the duration of the 10-hour flight. We arrived in Ireland around 9:15 am and the weather was perfect! We caught the bus to our hostel (or so we thought) and ended up lost for the better part of an hour (we soon found out that Ireland is ... read more

Ahhh!!! My amazing trip starts now! After a day of frenzied packing and last minute store trips, I think I am ready to take off on this crazy trip of mine! So welcome! This will be my primary means of communication with most of you, as I will not have any phone service while I am abroad. If you need something specific, feel free to email me or skype with me. I should have internet access for a good portion of my trip. Where am I going? What am I doing? Well, after months of planning (and training for the latter portion of the trip) here's a rough sketch of where in the world I will be: May 25-31 - Exploring Ireland May 31 - July 7 - Germany and surrounding countries July 7 - Doha, ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José » Irazu January 8th 2009

Today was jam-packed! In the morning, we set off to visit the Irazu Volcano. We were originally set to visit the Poaz Volcano but our tour guide decided that this would have a better view, as Poaz had clouds rolling in. On our way up the mountain, the bus stopped, as the guide had spotted an erupting volcano in the distance. This was awesome to see, as you could vaguely see the smoke and magma in the distance! When we reached our destination, we were settled right into a crater of the volcano. Apparently, the volcano hasn't erupted since the early 90's, but is still considered an active volcano. The area was beautiful, but almost martian-like (or what I would imagine Mars to look like). Venturing in further and exploring the area proved to be a ... read more

Today was coffee day! I'm not a coffee drinker, but touring a coffee plantation was fun! We drove big blue to the Coope Dota Coffee plantation just outside of San Jose. Coope Dota is a fair trade plantation. The tour started in their conference room, where we watched a short film about the coffee and learned that the coffee we were about to sample was award winning on an international level. After our introduction, we toured the plantation and saw the entire process of coffee-making from start to finish. We went through all of the machinery and then went out on to a platform where the coffee beans (also called cherries) were put out in the sun to dry. The tour guide allowed us to rake the cherries, which allowed them to have even exposure to ... read more

Today we headed out early, planning to visit two of Costa Rica's prisons. The goal of this trip was to get a grasp of the contrasts between this justice system and the United States justice system. There were absolute contrasts! We first visited an elderly prison. This prison was designed to keep the more vulnerable elderly population segregated from a general population. Upon entering the prison, I immediately noticed the lack of security that we were put through upon entering. We were briefly screened for weapons and then let into the prison in a large group. We were given a tour of the prison and then led to a classroom where a few of the staff spoke with us about the country's view on prisons and the actual prison itself. In viewing the prison, it seemed ... read more

Today was our opportunity to explore the city a bit and learn about the history within Costa Rica. Waking up early is always a struggle, but my roommate Amber and I made it down to breakfast with everyone else and as hotel guests, we were given free breakfast (again, the comida typica... never got old). The previous day, I had set up a water filtration system in our hotel room, because apparently the water can be a bit dicey. I boiled water with the coffee maker and filtered it through. Then I put the boiled water in the mini-fridge and when it cooled I had plenty of drinking water. I'm not normally worried about things like that, but, I was bored and McGuyvering a filtration system seemed like a good idea. Anyway, we grabbed water and ... read more
